He pulls a smoke out of his bronze, sombrero-shaped cigarette holder, takes a puff and dumps the ashes in one of his many silver, spur-shaped ashtrays. He tries to describe the laid-back life he leads at Idle Spurs, his six-and-a-half-acre spread amongst the lush, green hills of Sonoita, about 40 miles south of Tucson. "I'm just playing cowboys," says the man who scored dozens of pop hits for artists ranging from Cher to Gary Lewis and the Playboys to Bobby Vee. It's one of the 60-year-old record producer's favorite expressions. It's his way of modestly downplaying his years of astonishing success in the record business, of making his life sound like nothing special. But it's something more than that. It's also a literal expression of Garrett's lifelong obsession with the cowboy myth, fostered by years of watching Westerns at the local theater every Saturday morning. While music aficionados have spent the last four decades attempting to unravel the abundant references in Don McLean’s opus, there was one lyric that needed no further investigation: I can’t remember if I cried When I read about his widowed bride But something touched me deep inside The day the music died It just so happened that on February 4, 1959, 13-year-old Don McLean was folding up newspapers for his morning delivery route when he read about the fatal plane crash that took the life of one of his greatest inspirations, Buddy Holly. It would be about another twelve years before McLean would compose “American Pie” and provide the American public with this catchy lyric to embody the grief of that fateful day. While February 3, 1959 is now often considered to be the date of rock music’s first tragedy, it seemed just like any other to a tour-weary Buddy Holly.

This summer will find him in his studio again cutting a new record with CONCORD recording artist Frank Vignola. In it’s brief fourteen year history, Tempest has hosted an impressive roster of artists. Most notably, Rigsby has done projects for, and with musicians such as Paul McCartney, Glen Campbell, David Grisman, Academy Award winner Bill Conte, Jody Reynolds, Gerry Riopelle, Lee Oscar of ‘ War’ fame, Paul Rodriguez, Phoenix Symphony Orchestra, Mike Miller, R. Carlos Nakai, Frank Gambale, Gary Foster, Peter Erskine, Freda Payne, Pete Jolly, Chuck Demonico, Harvey Mason, Tommy Tedesco, Hal Clarke Rigsby at the helm in Tempest Recording.
