NAIBAhood News October 15, 2020 The American Booksellers Association launched the #BoxedOut campaign, which is designed to market indie bookstores and speak to the critical choice between shopping indie and shopping Amazon. #BoxedOut launched with six indie bookstore installations and a national social media campaign that all ABA member booksellers are invited to join. The bookstore installations feature cardboard coverings overtaking each storefront. Piles of cardboard boxes spill out of these now-cardboard buildings, quipping, “If you want Amazon to be the world’s only retailer, keep shopping there.” Cardboard books further bring the campaign message to life: “To Kill a Locally Owned Bookstore.” Look At The Publishers! New Voices New Rooms lives on with the exhibit hall and recordings. 95 publishers and gift vendors were at New Voices New Rooms. To Our Customers: Retailers are anticipating serious supply-chain challenges this Fall, and we are no exception. Due to paper shortages, the closure of printers, and shipping delays, coupled with limits on our in- store capacity, we expect this holiday shopping season to be very different from previous years. Some important things for you to bear in mind: SHOP EARLY! Due to fulfillment challenges & shipping delays, we recommend the following deadlines if you want your orders to arrive in time for the holidays: Hanukkah: October 25 Christmas & Kwanzaa: November 10 Pre-order the books you really want. Pre-orders can be placed on our website - just search by author or title. We have limited in-store shopping hours & customer capacity. If you expect to need more than 20 minutes to shop, please book a private shopping appointment outside of our normal opening hours. Whenever possible, please order online or email us instead of calling our stores. We have limited staff available to answer the phone. Please be patient with our booksellers and understand that we may run out of certain titles. Know that we are working as hard as we can to get you your orders in time for the holidays, but so much is out of our hands this year. We love being your local bookstore. -The Oblong Staff The American Booksellers Association has launched a fresh new design for IndieBound.org, the consumer-focused site where readers can search and shop for books, get recommendations, and find their local bookstore. The new design features streamlined pages that offer a greater focus on independent bookstores. New content includes links to Independent Bookstore Day information as well as ABA’s “October is the new December” campaign that encourages readers to buy early and buy local this holiday season. The $500 prize is split among the winning bookstore and the bookseller responsible for the display. Indie Playlists began in 2018 when NAIBA reached out to Seven Stories Press to find a way for independent presses and independent bookstores to work together.
