Will Benson pulled the Captains a run closer with an RBI in the seventh, but the Dragons scored two in the seventh and one more in the eighth to put the game on ice. Dayton reliever Alexis Diaz picked up the win after pitching two innings and Eastern Division W L GB allowing one run in support of starter James Marinan. Mota took the loss after allowing six runs, five earned, over 5+ innings of work.

The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes (High-A, Dodgers) have stolen 21 bases and the Seattle Mariners have swiped 19. CARLIN RETURNS: Luke Carlin is back for his second straight season as Captains Manager, becoming the first skipper since Ted Kubiak in 2010- 11 to spend multiple seasons in Lake County. Between Kubiak’s 2011 campaign and Carlin’s Captains debut last year, the Captains had a new manager every year for seven straight years. Carlin is now the fourth manager in Captains history to lead the team for multiple seasons, joining Kubiak, Aaron Holbert (2008-09) and Luis Rivera (2003-04). In his first year at the helm, Carlin led Lake County to a 60-79 record. Captains Contacts ALUMNI ON THE BENCH: Captains Pitching Coach Owen Dew and Bench Coach Jordan Smith both played for Lake County before beginning their coaching careers. LAST TIME OUT: McCarthy pitched at Great Lakes on Sunday and allowed three runs, two earned over five . The right-hander surrendered two runs in the first and one unearned run in the second before shutting the Loons down over the next three frames. He did not allow a hit after the first. The Captains, however, did not provide McCarthy with any run support and he took the loss in a 6-0 defeat in Midland, MI.

2018: McCarthy came out firing to start his pro career. After being drafted in the 18th round, the right-hander went to the Arizona Leaguer where he went 2-0 with a 1.35 ERA in nine relief outings. He struck out 20 and walked just two across 20 innings, earning a promotion to Short-Season Mahoning Valley. With the Scrappers, McCarthy made four starts and worked in relief twice, posting a 0.43 ERA and a 1-1 record. In 21 innings, he fanned 16 and again walked just two.

PERFECT GAME: McCarthy pitched the first in Seton Hall history during his sophomore year on April 15, 2016. The right-hander struck out eight and needed just 88 pitches (69 strikes) to pitch nine perfect frames against the LIU-Brooklyn Blackbirds. The performance was also the first perfect game in Big East history.

MANAGER: Luke Carlin – 2nd season in Lake County Luke Carlin, 38, returns for his second season as the Captains’ Manager, becoming the first skipper since Ted Kubiak (2010-11) to lead Lake County for multiple seasons. Carlin, the 13th field manager in team history, as the fourth manager to pilot Lake County for more than one campaign. Prior to his first year with the Captains, Carlin was the manager of the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, the Indians’ Short-Season affiliate. Before Mahoning Valley, Carlin began his coaching career as the hitting coach for the Double-A Akron RubberDucks in 2016. He was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in the 10th round of the 2002 Amateur Draft. Carlin made his Major League debut with the San Diego Padres in 2008 and played for the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2009. The catcher joined the Cleveland Indians in 2010 and played in 10 Major League games with the Tribe from 2010 to 2012. Carlin was also part of back-to-back Triple-A National Championship teams with the Columbus Clippers under the direction of Indians’ current Third Base Coach Mike Sarbaugh. In his playing career, Carlin played for three men who are current Major League managers: Rick Renteria (Chicago White Sox), Bud Black (Colorado Rockies) and A.J. Hinch (Houston Astros).

PITCHING COACH: Owen Dew – 1st season in Lake County Owen Dew, 30, returns to the Captains as the team’s pitching coach just eight years after he pitched for Lake County himself. Dew pitched for the Captains in 2010 and 2011, and was part of the team’s lone championship squad in 2011. He was the pitching coach for the Arizona League Indians last year and for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers in 2017. Dew’s Scrappers staff finished second in the New York-Penn League with a 2.92 ERA.

HITTING COACH: Jason Esposito – 1st Season in Lake County Jason Esposito, 28, begins his second year in the professional coaching ranks after serving as the hitting coach for the Arizona League Indians last year. As a player, Esposito was drafted in the second round in 2011 by the Baltimore Orioles after attending Vanderbilt University. He spent four seasons as a third baseman in the Orioles’ organization, reaching as high as Double-A Bowie.

BENCH COACH: Jordan Smith – 1st Season in Lake County Jordan Smith, 28, is a former Captain who is returning to Lake County this year as the team’s bench coach. Smith played for the Captains in the 2012 season. He hit .316 with nine home runs and 74 runs batted in for a team that included Francisco Lindor and Jose Ramirez. Captains fans gave Smith the nickname, “The Milkman,” due to his love for the nutrient-rich drink. Smith played eight professional seasons, including seven in the Indians’ organization. He reached as high as Triple-A Columbus.
