She took a risk agreeing to work with a student she had never met on a book she had no academic experience in, and in doing so she gave me the opportunity of my undergraduate career. Andrea knew exactly when to provide her input and when it was best to prod and encourage me and then step out of the way; yet she was always there if I needed her, and every book that she recommended opened up a significant new argument that changed my thesis for the better. The independence and guidance she gave me has resulted in a project I am so, so proud of, and so grateful to her for. I feel so lucky to have had an advisor who could make me laugh while telling me how badly my thesis needed work, who didn’t judge me when I came to her sleep-deprived or couldn’t express myself, and who shared my passion through her willingness to join and guide me on this ride. Christian Perspectives in the Lord of the Rings
Christian Perspectives in The Lord of the Rings DIANE SPEED The Lord of the Rings is of course a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision. That is why I have not put in, or have cut out, practically all references to anything like “religion”, to cults or practices, in the imaginary world. For the religious element is absorbed into the story and the symbolism. This is a quotation from a letter written by Tolkien on 2 December 1953 to Robert Murray, S. J.1 Tolkien had sought Murray’s comments on galley-proofs and typescript of some parts of the text before its first appearance in print in 1954 and 1955. Murray had replied that he discerned “a positive compatibility with the order of Grace”, and compared the image of Galadriel to that of the Virgin Mary.2 In other words, if we follow Murray’s lead, we may decode the narrative of The Lord of the Rings to find an overall representation of the central Christian discourse of salvation through divine grace, or we may find suggestive similarities to individual figures, or perhaps moments, in the Christian story on which that discourse is based. On the same occasion, however, Murray had also expressed his doubts about what critics would be able to make of the book, because he thought it defied classification.3 Murray’s comments and Tolkien’s statement bring to the reader’s attention important questions about the meaning of The Lord of the Rings and the ways in which the author has proceeded to construct that meaning. -

Augsburg Honors Review Romantic Theology as Revelation through Tom Bombadil and Goldberry in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings Brandon Best Cedarville University Abstract In J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, Tom Bombadil initially appears to be merely an eccentric, episodic character. Yet, upon close reading his enchanting spirit embodies moral signifcance throughout the trilogy when members in the war against Sauron recall his spirit in moments of hope and despair. Though he only appears to the Hobbits within the Old Forest, Bombadil represents ideals present throughout the entire story. As Tolkien wrote, “[Bombadil] represents something that I feel important, though I would not be prepared to analyze the feeling precisely. I would not, however, have left him in, if he did not have some kind of function” (Letters 178). -

McPartland, Lord of the Rings: Mythopoesis, Heroism, and Providence 1 THE LORD OF THE RINGS: MYTHOPOESIS, HEROISM, AND PROVIDENCE Thomas J. McPartland Kentucky State University Paper presented at the American Political Science Association annual conference, Seattle, September 1, 2011 J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings has truly become an icon of popular culture since it was published in 1954-55.1 It has sold millions upon millions of copies, given rise to whole industries of commentaries and an academy award winning film version, and spawned a prodigy of imitations in the ―fantasy‖ genre. It has attained almost cult-like status in some quarters. Indeed the power of the trilogy has been so captivating for some readers with certain social or political convictions that they have felt compelled to proclaim it as an inspiration and validation for the counterculture, or environmental soteriology, or the anti-war movement (even though any discerning reader will see these interpretations as woefully one-sided). Perhaps surprisingly, given its popular standing, it has been hailed by many literary critics as a classic work of literature, one of the best—or the best—of the twentieth century. The artistry of this Oxford philologist, so the argument would go, is admirably demonstrated in his masterful creation of a complete world, Middle-earth, with its distinct peoples, tongues, and geography, and by the sheer range and rich resources of his language to portray an array of memorable and engaging characters, to describe vivid, symbolically-charged scenes of nature, and to depict action in the best style of the epic tradition. -

Summer Reading Guide for Logic School
The Fellowship of the Ring Summer Reading Summer Reading Guide for Logic School In the sixth grade we start the adventure of Bilbo Baggins, in seventh grade watch Frodo take the sought-after ring on a journey, and in eighth grade watch the forces of good and evil battle as the journey continues. These books are not books that can be easily discerned at first glance, but require many levels of reading and understanding. The summer is a good opportunity to bring this literature to the student and have each one read and ponder the great questions of life. In Humanities our mission statement is: We, the Humanities Department at the Geneva School of Boerne, desire to engage our students in the Great Conversation of Human Civilization and to enable them to see the beauty and power of the written and spoken word so that their minds may be sharpened to properly understand the world in which they live. To this end and for these reasons, the Humanities Department at Geneva is wholeheartedly dedicated to the worth of grammar mastery, the warrant of logical reasoning, and the weight of rhetorical skill. Our desire is for our students to enter this “great conversation” with Tolkien’s literature, and thereby start to formulate the early muscle of sharpening their minds. A packet of information will be provided for each student with a brief summary of each chapter and questions to answer for each chapter. Requirements: All work is to be written in blue composition books (no other format will be accepted). If you are new and do not have one you can obtain one in the Logic/Rhetoric administration building.
