But the consultant’s lettuce-and-tomatoes analogy last week in this space touched off a social and, eventually, major media tidal wave. Go figure. We’ll get to Hill in the next story (right), after female PDs and MDs weigh in with their thoughts on a well-known though still confounding reality. In full disclosure, some of the women we contacted declined to contribute for lack of time or lack of what they felt would be helpful feedback. Some passed because they weren’t comfortable publicly commenting in a “no-win argument.” And some came to us asking to be part of the conversation. Country Aircheck got the consensus on last night’s (4/19) 50th ACM Awards from some folks in radio. KFDI/Wichita APD Carol Hughes: I about fell off my sofa when they opened the show with “Pledge Allegiance To The Hag.” They included songs that would never be on an awards show. Jason Aldean’s medley was fantastic. I loved the Milestone Awards. Those artists were not just brought onstage as a courtesy but they were showcased in a wonderful way and given a huge spotlight to show just why they were Milestone winners. -

Neal, Thesis Advisor Dr. Allen Anderson, Reader Dr. Andrea Bohlman, Reader © 2016 Mason Taylor Allen ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mason Taylor Allen: The Musical Features of 2015’s Top-Ranked Country Songs Under the direction of Dr. Jocelyn R. Neal The 2015 top-ten country songs analyzed in this study are characterized by the various formats of their song form, harmonies, and lyrics. This thesis presents a comprehensive study of the structure and narratives in sixty-seven songs that summarizes the distinctive features within those domains of contemporary commercial country music. A detailed description of the norm along with identifiable trends emerges. The song form that features most prominently in this repertory includes a verse-chorus-bridge form with three iterations of the chorus, an intro and outro section, and instrumental sections immediately following each chorus. The top-ten country songs have varying degrees of departure from this typical model. Primary features of the harmonies of these top songs include the frequent use of a double-tonic complex, the absence of a 5-1 authentic cadence, the same chord progression throughout the verse, chorus, and bridge, and the use of only two chords throughout the song. Lyrical analyses show that 2015 songs are continuing the traditional themes about romantic attraction, love, heartache, good times and partying, home, family, nostalgia, religion, and inspiration, within the context of small-town country life that this genre has used for years. -

Comm.‐ Infor.wetensch [email protected] 1 Abstract Dit onderzoek verdiept zich in de structuur van het sociaal netwerk van muziekartiesten. Wat onderzocht wordt, is of er binnen dit sociaal netwerk een zogenaamde power law verdeling te ontdekken valt. Dit is interessant vanwege de maatschappelijke relevantie van power law structuren in de samenleving. Om dit vast te stellen is er gekeken naar wie de meest invloedrijke artiesten zijn en van wie er de meeste nummers gecoverd zijn. De verwachting is dat er relatief weinig artiesten zijn met relatief veel invloed op medeartiesten, en overeenkomstig staan veel artiesten die weinig invloed hebben op hun medeartiesten. Hetzelfde fenomeen wordt verwacht bevestigd te worden voor gecoverde nummers. Nadat is gebleken dat de structuur van het sociaal netwerk onder muziekartiesten daadwerkelijk de kenmerken vertoont van een power law verdeling, is er vervolgens nog gekeken naar een viertal muzikale kenmerken van de meest invloedrijke artiesten gevonden tijdens dit onderzoek. Het betreft het genre, de muziekstijl, stemming van de muziek en de instrumentatie die een bepaalde artiest uitoefende. Ook van deze variabelen is er een frequentieverdeling gemaakt en is er gekeken of er op een power law gelijkende verdeling is. Dit bleek alleen bij de variabelen genre en instrumentatie het geval te zijn. Muziekstijl in mindere mate en wat stemming betreft zijn er geen dominante items gevonden. -

VOICES IN THE HALL DAVE COBB EPISODE TRANSCRIPT PETER COOPER Welcome to Voices in the Hall, presented by the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. I’m Peter Cooper. Today’s guest, producer extraordinaire Dave Cobb. DAVE COBB When we approach these records we approach it much the way a record would’ve been done in 1965, 1970. And it’s humans playing together. There are mistakes all over the record. There’s timing issues, there’s tuning issues, there’s pitch issues, there’s flubs of words. The same way people are seeking out organically grown food, I think people are seeking out organically grown music at the same time. The moment I heard Chris Stapleton I was like, “Man I’ve got to track him down.” If I can just get to Nashville I’d run into him and I’d run into Jason Isbell and try to sucker them in to make records. I like to fly by the seat of my pants. Walk in and see what’s going to grab you that day. To me it was a really cool thing about linking really great artists that I like now, and linking Nashville, what Nashville is today. Taking kind of a snapshot of it. And I love it when I get to introduce somebody to somebody else I think is talented. And you see there eyes both sparkle. And I love the unity in the scene. That’s why I moved here. GOOD MORNING, MIDNIGHT Written by Mark L Smith Based on the novel by Lily Brooks-Dalton August 3, 2018 FROM A BLACK SCREEN - WHAT SOUNDS LIKE A ROARING STORM... SURROUNDING US... ALMOST DEAFENING. SUPER: March 24th, 2034. Four Days After The Event. FADE IN: EXT. ARCTIC CIRCLE - DUSK ANGLE ON AUGUSTINE, (70), heavy winter coat, weathered face covered in gray stubble, standing at the center of a violent blizzard, peering upward. The deep lines on his face are from squinting, not smiling. Augustine doesn’t smile. Snow swirls all around him... that storm THUNDERING. Then we see what’s causing this storm... a large, MILITARY- STYLE HELICOPTER is rising into the dim dusk-blue arctic sky. We can make out the SILHOUETTES OF FIGURES in the windows. Augustine watches it ascend. The snowstorm around him settles... the THUNDER OF THE HELICOPTER FADES. The helicopter continues rising... JOINING SEVERAL OTHER COPTERS further above... already bending into formation. This is a LARGE EVACUATION. MOSELY (O.S.) Still time to change your mind! Augustine looks over to MASON MOSELY, (60s), striding across a path in the snow toward him. Beyond Mosely there’s a LAST HELICOPTER still grounded on the FLAGGED LANDING AREA... MEN, WOMEN, and a FEW CHILDREN HURRIEDLY FILING IN. MOSELY (CONT’D) Transferring the last of the outpost families, but still some open seats. Augustine shakes his head... looks back to all those helicopters dotting the sky. AUGUSTINE Like a race to see who can die first. Mosely moves beside Augustine... shares the view. 2. AUGUSTINE (CONT’D) There’s nothing left out there for them.
