The Mantle of the Prophet Joseph Passes to Brother Brigham: One Hundred Twenty-nine Testimonies of a Collective Spiritual Witness Lynne Watkins Jorgensen n August 8, 1844, six weeks after the Prophet Joseph Smith’s Omartyrdom, a meeting of the Saints was held in Nauvoo, Illinois. Brigham Young, President of the Quorum of the Twelve, and several other apostles had just returned from missions. The purpose of this meeting was to determine by vote who had the right and responsibil- ity to lead the Church—Sidney Rigdon, first counselor in the First Presidency, or the Quorum of the Twelve with Brigham Young at their head.1 In the course of the two meetings held that day, many in attendance received a divine witness that Brigham Young was to be the next leader: some Saints specifically state that Brigham Young assured the congregation that “here is President Sidney Rigdon, who was counselor to Joseph. I ask, where are Joseph and Hyrum? They 1. NINETEENTH CENTURY SOCIAL AND CULTURAL HISTORY J. he society of Weber County changed during the nineteenth century. Initially, the society was one of Native Americans, and then the fur trade developed a society where Native Americans and trap pers mingled together, as described by Osborne Russell. In the two decades following 1847, Weber County society became dominated by the Mormons; and, following 1869, the railroad and the changes it brought affected society drastically. With the arrival of the Mormons in 1847, the Native American culture and the Mormon culture of settlement clashed, much as the Mormon culture and the changes brought by the railroad later came into conflict. The journals and diaries of the early Mormons relate their joys and tragedies, including establishing homesites, planting crops, work ing the fields, daily house chores, harvesting crops, relating to Indians, surviving the heat of the summers and the cold of the win ters, bearing and raising children, tending the sick, burying the dead, and hoping for a better future. Women worked the fields and herded cattle along with the men and boys. Most families were involved with 151 152 HISTORY OF WEBER COUNTY farming in order to subsist, and farm crops included hay, grain, pota toes, corn, beans, and garden vegetables. Families generally had horses, cattle, and sheep. After the sheep were shorn, the wool was washed by the women, who also carded it, spun it into yarn, and then wove it into cloth. The cloth was made into dresses, shirts, and overalls. The family washing was done by hand, and stockings and mittens were knitted for the whole family. -

The Faith Healer’s Pledge: How early Mormons Captured Audiences Tal Meretz (Monash University) Abstract: This paper explores the use of faith healing in attracting converts to early Mormonism, by investigating the diaries and autobiographies of both converts and missionaries. It argues that while faith healing was technically banned from being used to convert people, it still played a specific but essential role as a ‘clincher’ for those on the brink of conversion. It explores faith healing in relation to the Mormon conversion process as a whole, and resolves the theologically inconsistent position on magic and supernaturalism. It contends that the use of faith healing in the Mormon missionary process has gone largely unacknowledged because previous scholars have prioritised official Mormon documents over unofficial personal writings. Key Words: Mormon, Joseph Smith, faith healing, conversion, nineteenth century America, missionaries, diaries, autobiographies, life writings. INTRODUCTION In 1831, Gilbert Belnap travelled to Kirtland, Ohio. He had heard that a third temple was being built there by the Mormons and wanted to see it for himself.1 In his autobiography, Gilbert wrote of the temple, “the architecture and the construction of the interior of this temple of worship surely must have been of ancient origin as the master builder has said that the plan thereof was given by revelation from God, and I see no reason why this should not be credited for no one can disprove it.”2 He was enamoured I would like to thank my two anonymous reviewers for their helpful comments. 1 While the Church would undergo several name changes before being named Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, this paper will use the informal term for members of the Church – Mormons - and will refer to their religion as Mormonism. -

But if this is not Thy will, and I go hence and die, wilt thou find some kind friend to bring my body back, and gather my friends who have fallen in foreign lands, and bring them up hither, that we may all lie together. I will tell you what I want. If tomorrow I shall be called to lie in yonder tomb, in the morning of the resurrection let me strike hands with my father, and cry, “My father,” and he will say, “My son, my son,” as soon as the rock rends and before we come out of our graves.1 (Joseph Smith) “The Tomb of Joseph, a Descendant of Jacob” One of Joseph Smith’s greatest desires was a proper resting place for his body once he died. He said on the occasion of the funeral of Lorenzo Barnes, “It has always been considered a great calamity not to obtain an honorable burial: and one of the greatest curses the ancient prophets could put on any man, was that he should go without a burial.”2 The nineteenth century was a time of high mortality rates, and the loss of loved ones and friends for Joseph Smith dominated much of his thought during the last few years of his life. His close associate, Benjamin F. Johnson, noted five songs that were among the Prophet’s favorites.3 All five had the theme of mortality.
