Box 168, Yellowstone National Park, WY 82190, USA Abstract: The negative impacts on bears (Ursus spp.) from human activities associated with roads and developments are well documented. These impacts include displacement of bears from high-quality foods and habitats, diminished habitat effectiveness, and reduced survival rates. Additionally, increased public visitations to national parks accompanied with benign encounters with bears along park roads have caused more bears to habituate to the presence of people. In some contexts, habituation can predispose bears to being exposed to and rewarded by anthropogenic foods, which can also lower survival rates. The managers and staff of Yellowstone National Park located in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, USA, and Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming, USA have implemented several proactive strategies to mitigate the negative aspects of bear habituation. These strategies include providing park visitors with educational information on bear viewing etiquette, managing roadside viewing opportunities, installing bear-resistant infrastructure, hazing bears from developments, enforcing food and garbage storage regulations, and making human activities as predictable as possible to bears. -

Family: Ericaceae Cranberry: a Native Jewel By Linda Lapin Cranberries are indispensable for the winter holidays. Tradition brings them to our holiday turkey dinners, and who doesn't have a linen table cloth with at least a little red stain on it from a wayward serving of cranberry sauce? This Rhode Island native berry may be a little smaller than the commercially grown cranberry varieties but is just as tasty when used in sauces, jellies, sweet breads, pies and stuffings. Cranberry, Vaccinium macrocarpon, grows wild in Rhode Island. Its native range extends from the East Coast to the Central U. S. and Canada, and from Southern Canada in the north to the Appalachians in the south. It is usually found in acid bogs growing in sphagnum along with other ericaceae such as highbush blueberry and black huckleberry. It grows in company with sheep laurel, leatherleaf, pitcher plants, sundews, and saplings of white cedar and red maple. Look for it in the Great Swamp or Diamond Bog. Cranberry was once called crane berry, because the flower resembles the look of a crane’s head and neck with a long sharp beak. Cranes were also observed wading the bogs gobbling up the berries. Other common names are black cranberry, low cranberry, trailing swamp cranberry, bear berry, and bounce berry. (Cranberries really are the best bouncing fruit I know.) A related species is small cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccus), which is even smaller and cuter. The plant is a low-growing, evergreen perennial with trailing, wiry stems. -

Team, Greensboro, NC The small cranberry helped stock the larder of English and American ships, fed trappers in remote regions, and pleased the palates of Meriwether Lewis and William Clark in their explorations across the United States (Lewis and Clark 1965). The Chinook, for example, traded dried cranberries with the English vessel Ruby in 1795 and at Thanksgiving in 1805 Lewis and Clark dined on venison, ducks, geese, and small cranberry sauce from fruit brought by Chinook women (McDonald 1966; Lewis and Clark 1965). Following settlement of the west, brown bear populations south of Canada declined significantly and now occupy only a fraction of their original range, where the brown bear has been listed as threatened since 1975 (Servheen 1989, 1990). Today, Alaska remains the last stronghold in North America for this adaptable, large omnivore (Miller and Schoen 1999) (Fig 1). From an iceberg filled fjord in LeConte Bay to the Keku Islands this remote area has hundreds of miles of shoreline to explore. But Alaska is not a forgiving place, being remote, having cold water, large tides and rug- ged terrain means help is not just around the corner. One needs to be experienced in both paddling and wilderness camping. There are not established campsites and we are trying to keep them from forming. To help ensure these wild areas retain their naturalness it’s best to camp on the durable surfaces of the beach and not damage the fragile uplands vegetation. This booklet will begin to help you plan an enjoyable and safe pad- dling tour. The first part contains information on what paddlers should expect in this area and some safety guidelines. The second part will help in planning a tour. The principles of Leave No Trace Camping are presented. These are suggestions on how a person can enjoy an area without damaging it and leave it pristine for years to come. Listed are over 30 Leave No Trace campsites and several possible paddling routes in this area. -

In the South, where plant food is available all year, not all bears hibernate—but pregnant females do. The female gives birth to 1−6 cubs (usually 2 or 3) in January, while she is deep asleep in her den. Black Bears eat a little meat, and some insects, but they rely on fruit, nuts, and vegetation for the bulk of their nutritional needs. They are not all black. Most are, with brown muzzles, but in some western forests they are brown, cinnamon, or blond, and a few, in southern Alaska and British Columbia, are creamy white or bluish−gray. Berryman Institute, Department of Wildland Resources, Utah State University, Logan, Utah 84322-5230, USA Abstract: We conducted telephone surveys of wildlife professionals who work with large carnivores to ask their opinions about how people should respond to avoid being injured when confronted by a black bear (Ursus americana), grizzly bear (Ursus arctos), mountain lion (Puma concolor), or gray wolf (Canis lupus). The respondents agreed that the most appropriate response was to try to increase the distance between a person and the carnivore. In the event of an attack by a black bear, mountain lion, or wolf, most respondents said to fight back. Opinion was divided over the best response for an individual who was being attacked by a grizzly bear, but a slight majority of professionals said to fight back if the attack was predatory and be passive if the attack was defensive; however, respondents also noted that many victims would be unable to identify the bear’s motive. If a black bear came into camp, most respondents said that a person should aggressively encourage the bear to leave and to fight back against a bear that enters a tent at night, regardless of species. Respondents unanimously agreed that bear pepper-spray is effective in defending against an attack. While any encounter with a large carnivore can be fatal to the person involved, we believe that selecting the right course of action increases the odds that the victim can escape without injury.
