    EXTRACTS FROM NICK GRAVENITE’S BOOK- “BAD TALKING BLUESMAN” It's not so easy to introduce Nick Gravenites because the man has done so many things that one can easily write a book or build a web site only dedicated to Gravenites who is singer, songwriter, guitarist, and producer in one person. Subsequently everything found on this page concerning Nick can only be described as incomplete. Nevertheless let's start with a short introduction Taxim Records added to one of their Bay Area Blues Sampler 'More Bay Area Blues' which contains the song 'Hard Thing' by Nick. 'Nick Gravenites grew up on the southside of Chicago hanging out in the mid- 50's with a coterie of misfit white kids - Elvin Bishop, Paul Butterfield, Michael Bloomfield - who went on to form that protean powerhouse of watershed white blues, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band. Learning their lessons first-hand from the southside greats - Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Howlin' Wolf, Jimmy Reed, Otis Rush - Gravenites & Co. burst open the seams of the scene with a feverish intensity and undeniable authenticity, redefining the blues with as much impact as the introduction of electric instrumentation had 15 years earlier. From the late 50's through the mid 60's, Gravenites gravitated between Chicago and San Francisco, establishing himself in the Bay Area in 1965. In addition to authoring the classic "Born In Chicago" and the groundbreaking "East West" for Butterfield, Gravenites scribed hits for Janis Joplin and has his songs recorded by Big Brother and the Holding Company, Michael Bloomfield, the Electric Flag (of which Gravenites was a founding member), Pure Prairie League, Tracy Nelson, Roy Buchana, Jimmy Witherspoon as well as blues giants Howlin' Wolf, Otis Rush, and James Cotton.

Fronted by Harp-playing vocalist ROB STONE and held together by a rock-solid rhythm section, the group is comprised of seasoned professionals with well over half a century of combined blues playing experience. They’ve paid their dues in the smoky Chicago blues joints and toured coast to coast across North America and Europe, as well as the Hawaiian islands and Japan, playing countless blues festivals, club dates and television appearances. Separately, the members of the group have recorded for the respected Alligator, Evidence, Hightone, Ice House, Marquis, Appaloosa and Magnum blues labels, and received national recognition in countless blues publications. These musicians have performed with and learned from many of the greats...and it shows from the first note. They are all authentic showmen with pure abil- ity to tear up a stage, as evidenced by their prominent role in the recent Martin Scorsese-produced “Godfathers and Sons” episode of The Blues series that aired recently on PBS stations natiowide. Together they now have a brand new release on Chicago’s Earwig label. As a vocalist Rob Stone is powerful, yet relaxed and natural; as a harmonica player he evokes the sounds of greats like Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Walter Horton. This band navigates their way effortlessly through one lean arrangement after another, from a soulful slow blues to a ferocious, driving slide guitar workout recalling past greats like Elmore James, Earl Hooker, and Muddy Waters, as well as all the blues harp legends from the hey- day of Chicago blues.

GLT Night at Comedy ofErrors by Events and Promotions Director Linda Healy We have been reminiscing since last summer about GLT Night at the Shakespeare Festival, and greatly looking forward to another exclusive evening of music, refreshment, and masterful theater August 6th. Once again, GLT has the entire house for this performance. Our evening begins at 4:00 PM on the grounds of lovely Ewing Manor. For the same price that you'd pay just for the play, you'll hear traditional Irish music from the GLT Night SullivanBurton trio and classic jazz fromjazzchocolat, while you linger over the delicious boxed dinner catered by Biaggi's Ristorante Italiano. (Biaggi's will also offer a cash wine bar.) Following dinner, meander to the cobblestone courtyard for a Green Show mini play. Comedy of Errors At 7:30 PM, we'll open the theater for general admission seating to Comedy of Errors, a classic Shakespearean serving of mistaken identity and mayhem, with a healthy dollop of laughter.

It was 1966, Seiji Ozawa, the guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony for the Ravinia Summer Series, walks into the renowned blues bar, Big Johns, and asks Corky Siegel of the Siegel-Schwall Blues Band; "Would your band jam with my band?" 1968: "When Corky Siegel cupped his harmonica and the pavilion microphone together and began a half saxophone half blues trumpet wail, even the least conservative Chicago Symphony Orchestra member might have shivered at the hand-writing on the crumbling walls." For more than 50 years, Siegel has been melding his masterful blues harmonica playing with accessible classical music, and at age 73, he has just released an album [Different Voices] containing some of the best work of his career." Elmore Magazine Few can claim to have forged an entirely original genre of music. In 1966, Corky Siegel did just that. But not without the inspiration of his personal mentors, Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and the other great Chicago blues masters, and not without the help of world-renowned classical maestro Seiji Ozawa, who came into a famed Chicago Blues club, discovered the blues harmonica virtuoso, and suggested a collaboration. Guiding the blues out of the smoky caverns of Big John's and Pepper's Lounge and onto the stages of the Chicago Symphony, New York Philharmonic and beyond, Corky reaches across the globe from different sides of the musical landscape, dissolving the walls between genre and people to take us to places we have never been before.

"I hope you can hear me," he said. He has always been heard, loud and clear. The man who is almost without any argument one of the most influential and great drummers in the history of popular music had the night before been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Paul Butterfield Blues Band in ceremonies at the hall's home in Cleveland. "Sam does not just play the drums," said his longtime friend and musical collaborator Corky Siegel. "He sings the drums." This HOF thing is old hat for Lay. He is already in the Blues Hall of Fame in Memphis, Tenn., and the Jazz Hall of Fame in Los Angeles, and though the word "legend" is tossed around so cavalierly these days that it is applied to winners of televised dance contests and to Cubs rookies, Lay is the real thing. Born in Birmingham, Ala., in 1935 to parents who worked the Pullman train cars, he is an 80-year-old living and vital link to the history of the blues. Moving north to Cleveland and then to Chicago, he played the drums and sang with virtually every giant of the blues: Muddy Waters, Jimmy Reed, Hound Dog Taylor, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter, Willie Dixon, James Cotton … the list is long, as is that of the number of recordings featuring or starring Lay.
