From the Archives: Athens Country Club Hosted Ohio’s Best Golfers in the Ohio Open

The Athens Country Club, founded in 1921, quickly established its reputation among pro golfers and top amateur players in the state of Ohio as it hosted 38 golfers in the 1923 Ohio Open tournament. This annual competition has seen notable winners over the years; among them are , Denny Shute, Tom Weiskopf, and . As the venue for such a prestigious event, the newly-opened Athens club had an opportunity to make an impression upon elite golfers with its facilities, golf course, and hospitality.

The 36-hole event was staged on July 30 – 31, 1923, for participants from across the state, as well as from Parkersburg. The field included George Sargent, the professional who designed the ACC layout as played then. Sargent’s young son Alfred, later a star of the Ohio State golf team, played as an amateur. F. Stanley Crooks, an amateur from Scioto CC who often partnered with Jules Blanton, then ACC golf pro, competed; Crooks was a life-time member of the ACC, an honor bestowed for his role in the ACC’s founding. Long hitting Lloyd Gullickson, professional at the Columbus Elks golf club was a gallery favorite, as was 19-year old Bobby Shrieve of Cleveland.

During the first day of play, only five players broke 80 on the course. Few were able to improve on the second day. The winning score of 155 (76-79) belonged to P. O. Hart, the pro at the Marietta Country Club. Gullickson took second place with 156 (77-79). Shrieve, who had problems on the 17th hole in his first round, scored 161 (82 – 79) and shared third place with George Sargent (80-81) and Charley Lormes, another Columbus pro. ACC’s Jules Blanton tied a player from Cleveland at 168 and divided 15th place money.

Blanton, after competing in Shaker Heights later that summer, returned to Athens and declared, “The professional open tournament held at the Athens Country Club last July has surely put Athens on the map in golf circles.” Those who played here, he reported, found the Athens course “to be one of the most difficult and interest[ing] links in the state.”
