Go on, say it out loud. Don’t be embarrassed. Whitsundays. Feels good doesn’t it? Now close your eyes and imagine yourself island hopping aboard a luxury yacht. Picture the dazzling white sand of Whitehaven Beach. Think about snorkelling amid pristine coral reefs among countless tropical fish. Feel the cool breeze dance over your skin as the sun warms you on a tropical island. Anticipate the throbbing nightlife and international cuisine at Airlie Beach. The Whitsundays is not at all overhyped. If you can’t enjoy yourself here, you don’t have WHITSUNDAY COAST a pulse. And yet, the area is not all about the Whitsunday Islands themselves. What, there’s more? Mackay is a thriving regional city with a real heartbeat and plenty of soul; the Pioneer Valley and Eungella National Park offer cool respite, stunning scenery and cute platypuses; and Cape Hillsborough is rugged and largely untamed. Tell someone you’re heading to the Whitsunday Coast and prepare for a jealous response and cries of ‘Can I come too?’. You’ve chosen wisely.     THE EXTENT AND SEVERITY OF THE MACKAY HIGHLANDS 2018 WILDFIRES AND THE POTENTIAL IMPACT ON NATURAL VALUES, PARTICULARLY IN THE MESIC FORESTS OF THE EUNGELLA-CREDITON AREA HINES, H. B.1, BROOK, M.2, WILSON, J.3, McDONALD, W. J. F.4 & HARGREAVES, J.5 During an unprecedented fire season in Queensland in 2018, a complex of fires burnt in the Mackay Highlands region of Queensland. Some of these fires had been burning continuously since August, but an extreme heatwave in November caused the rapid expansion of intense fire, just prior to the wet season breaking. The fires affected 12 areas of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) managed estate, with approximately 71,000 ha or 41% of this estate burnt. In this paper, we document the methods used to map the extent and severity of these fires and consider the potential impacts on natural values, within QPWS managed estate. Extensive areas (57,113 ha) of eucalypt woodlands and forests were burnt. Whilst fire adapted, the extent of fire and the high proportion burnt at very high to extreme severity in these ecosystems are likely to have affected a range of significant species. Of particular concern was the area (11,217 ha) of rainforest and scrub communities burnt, particularly cloud rainforests in the Eungella-Crediton area. These are highly fire-sensitive ecosystems and our observations suggest that, even at very low fire severity, impacts are likely highly significant and long lasting. This event provides an important opportunity to assess in detail the ecological effects of fire to inform conservation management of these fire-sensitive communities.

    Paul Stephen Sattler OAM M.Nat.Res.; B.App.Sc.(Rur.Tech.) Paul has a lifetime of professional experience in nature conservation. He was the principal architect in doubling Queensland’s National Park estate in the 1990s whilst working with the Queensland National Parks and Wildlife Service (QNPWS). Paul initiated and guided the comprehensive description of Queensland’s bioregional ecosystems and the assessment of their status, a vital planning tool for conservation and natural resource management. He was directly involved in the development of a range of State and national conservation policies and has a particular interest in rangeland conservation and sustainable management. After leaving the QNPWS, Paul formed his own specialised eco-consultancy business and was principal author of the National Land and Water Resources Audit’s terrestrial biodiversity assessment of Australia, the first detailed assessment of biodiversity at a range of scales nationally. He grew up in a beekeeping family and learnt a practical appreciation of nature and is now once again, an apiarist. Having completed a degree in Applied Science (Rural Technology) in 1971 at the University of Queensland, Gatton College, he went on to gain a Masters degree in Natural Resources at the University of New England, Armidale.     Cycads and their associated species in Queensland Travel Scholarship Report The author with Lepidozamia hopei at Cape Tribulation, Queensland Felix Merklinger Diploma Course 45 July 2009 1 Preface The second year of the three-year diploma course at Kew offers the opportunity to apply for a travel scholarship. This is the chance for a student to study a chosen plant or group of plants in their natural habitat. Since working in the Palm House at Kew as a member of staff, I have developed a passion for the order Cycadales. Kew has an extensive collection of cycads; mainly the South African Encephalartos, which are well represented in the living collections of the Palm and Temperate House. I am especially interested in the genus Cycas and their insect pollinators, and am planning to study this relationship intensively throughout my future career. Australia was chosen as the destination for my first trip to look at cycads in the wild. This continent has some of the most ancient relicts of flora and fauna to be found anywhere in the world. Australia is home of all three families within the Cycadales and also has a number of weevils involved in their pollination. This, therefore, is the perfect country to be starting my studies. Additionally, the Australian species of cycads at Kew are not as well represented as the African species – the Australian cycads can be notoriously difficult to grow in cultivation and, of course, the import and export regulations from and into Australia are rather tight. 2 This trip provided a great opportunity to study the native flora of a country, combining this chance with a passion for insect-plant interactions, accumulating knowledge and experience for a possible future career and gathering horticultural understanding of an ancient group of plants which is in need of long-term conservation.

    Mackay District - Feral Pig Management Stakeholder Training Package Natural Resources, Mines and Energy 2004 INTRODUCTION: Feral pigs currently cause significant economic, environmental and social issues within the Mackay Region. Within 2002 the Cane productivity loss due to feral pigs in the Mackay District was 16,648 tonnes, 633Ha. In addition to this economic loss, environmental and social damage due to feral pigs is occurring within the Mackay region. To date environmental loss is occurring within several of Mackay’s major State Parks and forests including; Conway National Park/State Forest, Dryander National Park and Eungella National Park. The Federal Governments $2.7 billion Natural Heritage Trust is Australia’s largest ever environmental rescue package. Under the trust the Mackay region purchased 30 traps to utilise for strategic, co-ordinated feral pig trapping within the Mackay coastal region. This project aims to actively involve all relevant sectors of the community including; Landholders, Natural Parks and Wildlife Service, Mackay Area Productivity Service (MAPS), City/Shire Councils and the Department of Natural Resources Mines and Energy in strategic feral pig trapping programs. Traps funded via the trust were allocated as follows:- Whitsunday Shire Council – 20 traps Sarina Shire Council – 2 traps Mirani Shire Council – 2 traps Mackay City Council – 6 traps. The program includes utilising accredited trappers working in conjunction with their Local Shire/City Councils, Environmental Protection Agency or MAPS to undertake strategic feral pig trapping within the Mackay region. Other than trap usage the accredited trappers will not receive any financial support or incentive from any of the stakeholders. Stakeholders will not receive any financial incentives from trappers.

  • The Pyraloidea of Eungella: a Moth Fauna in Its Elevational and Distributional Context
    THE PYRALOIDEA OF EUNGELLA: A MOTH FAUNA IN ITS ELEVATIONAL AND DISTRIBUTIONAL CONTEXT KITCHING, R. L.1, ASHTON, L. A.1,2, ORR, A. G.1 & ODELL, E. H.1 An intensive, two-season survey of moths along an elevational transect from 200 to 1200 m above sea level was an integral part of the recent Eungella biodiversity survey. The overall results have been published elsewhere. In this paper we examine in finer detail the patterns of distribution and faun istics of one of the dominant taxa from that dataset. The Pyraloidea comprise two families of so-called micro-moths, the Pyralidae and the Crambidae. Overall we sampled more than 7000 indi- viduals of more than 100 species. In spring these were principally in the lowland sites, but the summer samples were more evenly spread across elevations. In both seasons characteristic upland and lowland assemblages were apparent, separating at about 700 m above sea level. These elevational patterns were driven statistically by a small group of abundant species. Focusing on the Pyraustinae-Spilomelinae clade (91 species in our samples) and comparing them with samples from other Australian rainforest locations suggests that the Eungella forests represent the southernmost limits for 24 species, and the northern limits for five species. In other cases, the species is known from sites both north and south of Eungella.
