THE ORKUSTRA This day-by-day diary of The Orkustra's live, studio, broadcasting and private activities is the result of two decades of research and interview work by Bruno Ceriotti, but without the significant contributions by other kindred spirits this diary would not have been possible. September 1966 Undoubtedly the most experimental and ecletically diverse band of the so-called 'San Francisco Sound', The Orkustra were put together by the infamous Bobby Beausoleil. A larger than life character with a mixed reputation ("He was like Bugs Bunny," says Orkustra's bandmate Nathan Zakheim. "Very in your face, enthuastic."), Robert Kenneth Beausoleil, aka 'Cupid', aka 'Bummer Bob', aka 'Bobby Snofox', was born on Thursday, November 6, 1947, in Santa Barbara, California. After dropping out of high school and let his hair grow out, Bobby moved to Los Angeles in search of fame and fortune in 1965. There, over the summer, he played a six-string rhythm guitar with The Grass Roots, a folk- rock band later known as LOVE, for only three weeks, and also made a cameo appearance (as 'Cupid') in the famous underground documentary movie Mondo Hollywood. -

The conference was organized through the University of California Extension Programs. The advisory committee consisted of Thomas Parkinson, Professor of English at U.C. Berkeley, Donald M. Allen, West Coast Editor of Grove Press, Robert Duncan, Poet, and Richard Baker, Program Coordinator. Archive from “A Secret Location” Small Press / Mimeograph Revolution, 1940s–1970s We are pleased to offer for sale a captivating and important research collection of little magazines and other printed materials that represent, chronicle, and document the proliferation of avant-garde, underground small press publications from the forties to the seventies. The starting point for this collection, “A Secret Location on the Lower East Side,” is the acclaimed New York Public Library exhibition and catalog from 1998, curated by Steve Clay and Rodney Phillips, which documented a period of intense innovation and experimentation in American writing and literary publishing by exploring the small press and mimeograph revolutions. The present collection came into being after the owner “became obsessed with the secretive nature of the works contained in the exhibition’s catalog.” Using the book as a guide, he assembled a singular library that contains many of the rare and fragile little magazines featured in the NYPL exhibition while adding important ancillary material, much of it from a West Coast perspective. George Herms letter ca. late 90s relating to collecting and archiving magazines and documents from the period of the Mimeograph Revolution. Small press publications from the forties through the seventies have increasingly captured the interest of scholars, archivists, curators, poets and collectors over the past two decades. They provide bedrock primary source information for research, analysis, and exhibition and reveal little known aspects of recent cultural activity. The Archive from “A Secret Location” was collected by a reclusive New Jersey inventor and offers a rare glimpse into the diversity of poetic doings and material production that is the Small Press Revolution. -

Writers such as Diane di Prima, Hettie Jones, Joanne Kyger, Joyce Johnson, Bonnie Bremser, and Janine Pommy Vega were part of the 1950s Beat literary culture and had social relationships with the more famous male Beat writers such as Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg. To differing degrees the women writers have also been influenced by the aesthetics of the male writers, and since the 1950s their work has been contextualised alongside the men's in literary magazines, anthologies and more recent academic studies. -

HAIGHT-ASHBURY AND ITS CONTRIBUTION TO THE COUNTERCULTURE MOVEMENT A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Historic Preservation and Planning by Ethan James Potter August 2020 i © 2020 Ethan James Potter i ABSTRACT The City of San Francisco, specifically the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood, was the epicenter of the American Counterculture Movement in the mid to late sixties. The social, cultural, and political impact of this movement is vast and widely known. This thesis provides a themed historical narrative of the Haight-Ashbury, specifically about its role in the Counterculture Movement. There are three major themes that explore the history of both the Counterculture Movement and Haight-Ashbury. Significant planning and preservation efforts for Haight-Ashbury, since the sixties, are also surveyed. Subjects such as intangible culture, history, city planning, and architecture are examined as they pertain to Haight-Ashbury and the Counterculture Movement. ii BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Ethan Potter is, above all, passionate for history. He grew up in Sammamish Washington, playing baseball and football. He studied history, English, and anthropology at Washington State University graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in History. He then worked in education as a tutor and a docent. Ethan decided to pursue a degree in Historic Preservation for its ability to educate the public about history. Ethan was inspired to pursue history after reading Carl L. Becker’s 1930 speech, “Every Man A Historian,” which demonstrates how historical research is conducted by nearly everyone, every day. -

Open access: Radical Americas is a peer-reviewed open access journal. Abstract This paper looks specifically at two influential newspapers of the American underground press during the 1960s. Using the Berkeley Barb and the San Francisco Oracle, the paper proposes two arguments: first, that the inability of the countercultural press to envisage real alternatives to sexuality and sex roles stifled any wider attempt within the countercultural movement to address concerns around gender relations; and second, the limitation of the ‘radical’ imagination invites us to question the extent to which these papers can be considered radical or countercultural. -

The addition processed in 1991 contains manuscript and typescript materials related to the Four Seasons Foundation publication of Interviews (1980) by Edward Dorn and The Graces (1983) by Aaron Shurin; and the Grey Fox Press publication of Enough Said (1980) by Philip Whalen and I Remain (1980), a collection of Lew Welch's letters. The addition processed in 2011 enhances the earlier accessions with additional press files, correspondence, as well as Allen's personal subject files. -

Document 1 – the “Human Be-In”
Document 1 – The “Human Be-In” The “Human Be-In” was a gathering in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park that took place on January 14, 1967. The event was triggered by the passage of a California law outlawing the “psychedelic” drug LSD illegal. Participants included Dr. Timothy Leary, a psychologist who advocated the use of psychedelic drugs, which alter human consciousness and perception, the poet Allen Ginsburg (pictured above) and such local rock bands as the Grateful Dead, Big Brother and the Holding Company, and the Jefferson Airplane. It is estimated that somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 people attended. WWW.TEACHROCK.ORG Document 2 – Newspaper Account of the “Human Be-In” All Kinds of ‘Kooks’ Gather for ‘Happening’ By Richard M. Harnett United Press International San Francisco, Jan. 14, 1967 —Take all the beatniks, hippies, beardies, and LSD “saints” in San Francisco and the Berkeley delegation and put them all on a polo field for one grand “Be-In” on a sunny Saturday afternoon. It happened. Police estimated the crowd at the Golden Gate Park polo field at 15,000, including a large number of tourists and other square people who happened by and were dumbfounded at the sight. Beards had been curled, dyed, and decorated with flowers. The ordinary attire of the participants, which is enough to slow traffic, had been traded for “feast day” garments. One lanky young man with long hair wore a red gunnysack. Another had a towel around his waist and beads around his neck. A chubby blonde wore a flour sack with “U.S.A.” stenciled on the front and smaller printing in foreign languages on back proclaiming that the contents couldn’t be sold. -

LA CULTURA ITALIANA LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI (1919- ) This month’s essay is a repeat essay that was originally published in the May, 2012 Bulletin. In honor of Lawrence Ferlinghetti’s 100th birthday in March, I thought it would be interest- ing to take another look at the life of this man who has so shaped San Francisco culture since the 1950’s. Lawrence Monsanto Ferlinghetti was born in Yonkers, New York on March 24, 1919. He is an American poet, painter, liberal activist, and the co-founder of City Lights Booksellers & Publishers on Columbus Ave. in North Beach. Author of poetry, trans- lations, fiction, theatre, art criticism, and film narration, he is best known for a collection of poems entitled A Coney Island of the Mind (New York: New Directions, 1958), which has been translated into nine languages. His mother, Albertine Mendes-Monsanto Lyons, was of French, Portuguese, and Sephardic Jewish heritage. His father, Carlo Ferlinghetti, was born in Brescia, Italy on March 14, 1872. He immigrated to the United States in 1892, and was naturalized in 1896, and worked as an auctioneer in Little Italy in New York. At some unknown point, Carlo Ferlinghetti shortened the family name to “Ferling,” and Lawrence wouldn’t learn of his original name until 1942, when he had to provide a birth certificate to join the US Navy. Though he used “Ferling” for his earliest published work, he reverted to the original Italian “Ferlinghetti” in 1955, when he published his first book of poems, Pictures of the Gone World. — PAGE 6 — LA CULTURA ITALIANA CONTINUED Ferlinghetti’s father died six months before he was born, and his mother was committed to an asylum shortly after his birth.
