PRESIDENTS REPORT 2009/2010

It is a pleasure to present to you my report as President of Bowls Tasmania South. This being my second year I felt I became a bit more comfortable in the position. I have enjoyed the year due mainly to the Board Members that has been my pleasure to work with. So I thank them all for the hours of hard work they have put in on your behalf. A special thanks to Neil Clark who was always available to help with your problems. His tireless efforts in keeping you informed on all matters concerning bowls Thanks also to Deputy President Ivy and Treasurer Adrian for their assistance. As always Statistician Bob Etherington has kept us up to date with all the results in his usual prompt and accurate manner. Unfortunately Bob is resigning as statistician so he can have more time to do other things. Bob will be extremely hard to replace. Thank you Bob for all the years of hard work and dedication you have bought to the task, you will be missed. I thank the Ladies and the Men's Match Committee, the Umpires and Coaches for the time and effort they give to Bowls. I was pleased to be able to present the Men's Division One Pennant winners' medallions. I was disappointed not to be able to attend any Ladies finals this year. I would like to congratulate all Division Pennant winners. We were able to bring south several State Pennant titles for which I am sure we are all very proud. Well done to all winners. Without Sponsors we would be hard pressed to survive so I would very much like to thank DJ Motors for their support over many years and hope it will continue for many more, also thanks to RACT for sponsoring the Women's Pennant and Wrest Point for their support as well as Trophy Traders and I thank them for that. I ask all Bowlers to remember our sponsors if you are in need of any product or service please give them your support.

We have some big decisions to make for the future of bowls down south and I ask you all to make yourselves aware of the proposals so we can move in the right direction we believe is best for all of us. I thank you all for your continued support for our game. The Board is ever mindful of your needs and we are at all times endeavouring to move the game forward and to make it more enjoyable for your participation. I would like to once more thank the Board members for their contribution and assistance. Finally I wish you all the very best of luck and hope you Winter well and safe and be back bigger and better next season.

Denis Brownlow President WOMEN'S MATCH COMMITTEE - Bev Gillie

We, the match committee, wish to congratulate all the winners throughout the season. It has been another very busy season. Many thanks to all Clubs who made their facilities available to us, and for their hospitality. We were made to feel very welcome. Congratulations to our players of the year: Open - Debbie Lee (Rosny Park) and B Grade - Ruth Nischler (Taroona. State Pennant winners were: Division 1 Rosny Park; Divisions 2 and 4 - Brighton.. Congratulations to all these players, an excellent result for their clubs and for the South. Many thanks to our lady umpires and the men who helped out with umpiring during the season. On behalf of the committee and myself, we wish you all a safe, healthy and happy winter break, wherever you are, and look forwad to seeing you all again next season - relaxed and refreshed.

MEN'S MATCH COMMITTEE - Noel Sharp

Firstly, I would like to thank those clubs which provided their greens and members to host Tasmanian and Southern championships as well as pennant finals. Once again it has been a busy season with so many bowling events being run and, having worked on the State event calendar for next season, the South is in for another busy season. It was particularly pleasing to see the success that the Southern teams had in the State pennant finals. I have been fortunate to have had a good working relationship with Association Secretary, Neil Clark and Statistician Bob Etherington and I thank my committee of Max Banks, Tony Hine, Roger Harvey and John Anderson for their support.

COACHES PANEL - Ross Bannister

In the last season we have seen big changes with the new Coaching System. Bowls started to introduce these new systems into bowls back in 2008 and now have just completed the first two modules, the Introductory Coach and the Club Coach. Bowls Australia is still working on the Competition Modules, the Advanced Coach and the High Performance coach course guides. Bowls Tasmania Coaches panel has put together a pathway for coaches in Tasmania to progress through their coaching course. Tasmanian Bowls Coaches Pathway procedures: (1) Minimum age for an Introductory Coach is 14 years of age. (2) Minimum age for a Club Coach is 18 years of age.

(3) Must hold an Introductory Coach accreditation for one season before becoming a Club Coach. (4) Each Bowls Coach must obtain a new National Police check on re-accreditation or on request from Bowls Tasmania through the Bowls Tasmania Coaches committee. The national police check is now a mandatory part of obtaining a national coaches certification. The Introductory and Club Coach accreditation has a fee of $50.00 plus an additional $5.00 for a National Police check. It is recommended that this $55.00 fee should be paid by the coach's bowls club. Please note that the Club Coach accreditation fee is normally $100.00 but is currently being heavily subsidized by Bowls Tasmania. The usual fee includes the cost of the new

Southern Tasmanian Bowls Association Inc. Trading as Bowls Tasmania South 105th Annual Report and Financial Statements 2009-2010

manual at $29.00, Bowls Australia registration fee of $25.00 and the remainder in administration costs. There are only four regional Presenters and Assessors in Tasmania who are qualified to present the new courses to coaches. These are voluntary positions and they are not paid for their time or expenses. Northern Tasmania: Mrs Marie Cleaver and Mr Greg Smith North West Tasmania: Mrs Lorraine Woolley Southern Tasmania: Mr Ross Bannister. In July and August 2009,1 was asked to run a trial Introductory and Club Coach Course by Bowls Australia. Twenty two people from the South participated in this trial resulting in thirteen new coaches for the Introductory Course and nine level 1 and 1A coaches re-accredited in the Club Coach Course. All coaches enjoyed this new system because it is a hands-on course and not just sitting and listening to people tell you what you should do. Over the last season, Cremorne, Howrah and Cygnet Bowls Clubs have asked for and received coaching for their members. The Southern State ladies team members received specialised coaching from Roy Nunn. The new Southern ladies development squad, which started this season, competed in three state-wide pennant games. They were coached over the winter months and won the State pennant. The under 18 juniors also had practice and trials over the winter months. A big thank you to the Beltana Bowls Club for the use of their synthetic green. We have approached Beltana to use their green again this winter on Sundays for coaching purposes.

UMPIRE'S PANEL REPORT - Suzi Rogers and Denis Edwards Overall this past season has been a successful and fulfilling one with a much improved participation rate with bowlers taking up the challenge of becoming Umpires. The panel have adopted the approach that given sufficient numbers courses will be conducted central to the club with the most applicants, this approach was initiated at the Orford Club and carried forward to courses at Franklin, Buckingham and Sandy bay. Particular thanks must go to Henry Ferguson for his enthusiasm in organising the Orford course which resulted in the panel using the format of this very successful course to raise the interest for similar courses throughout the southern region. All together there have been 34 new Umpires qualified from clubs such as Cygnet, Oatlands, Geeveston and several metropolitan clubs. The only clubs who do not have an Umpire are Dover, Glenorchy RSL and Ouse, hopefully the new season will see an application or two from these clubs. As is normal some of our senior Umpires are retiring and two such members who have long been stalwarts in the Umpiring field are Tom Bellis and Bill Jones both of these two gentlemen were Level 2 Umpires. Tom provided many hours toward the training of Umpires and Bill was always ready to assist in championships etc. Unfortunately those players who participate at the senior levels are still reticent to undertake Umpire training and seem to feel that being an Umpire will affect their game but see nothing wrong with interrupting someone else's game from a lower division, in the future they may have to wait until an Umpire is available to attend resulting in their game being delayed. After many years of twisting and turning Umpires now have a distinctive shirt to assist in making them more visible when officiating at major events such as championships or national carnivals etc . Umpires have purchased these shirts themselves and the Panel is grateful for the show of commitment this action demonstrates. During this season BTS were responsible for conducting the BA qualifying rounds, BT men's and ladies championships and the Panel would like thank those Umpires who volunteered their time to officiate at these events. In addition the RSL National Carnival was conducted at the Rosny Park Club and the Panel accepted the role of co-ordinating the Umpires for this event at both Beltana and Rosny. The carnival resulted in a significant financial benefit to the clubs concerned and the Umpires Panel was pleased to be able to assist and at the same time give a number of new Umpires valuable experience at officiating at this level. In conjunction with the BTS board the Panel sought to purchase a digital projector with the view that training can be improved and following the development of a training package allow training programs to be conducted by a greater number of Level 2 Umpires and facilitate a common approach to training delivery, moving away from the old "chalk and talk" routine to a training delivery technique more in tune with modern day education principles and techniques. This equipment plus written training materials and a more civilised approach to the way that Candidates are examined should result in the training of Umpires becoming more enjoyable and less like a schoolie system. Sadly bowls etiquette seems to be being disregarded, much to the detriment of the game. Whether this is the result of the Crystal Mark Laws is not known, but every effort should be taken by all bowlers to ensure that their attitude and behaviour on and off the green does not interfere with

Southern Tasmanian Bowls Association Inc. Trading as Bowls Tasmania South 105th Annual Report and Financial Statements 2009-2010

anyone else's enjoyment of the great game. Disregard for or ignorance of the Laws of the game is no excuse when Law Books are readily available and Umpires in clubs willing to advise on the Laws of the Game. Despite some minor irritations this past season has been a fruitful and productive one and the Panel looks forward to further expanding the Umpire ranks and providing information to players and clubs during season 2010/ 2011 We would like to wish all bowlers good luck in their playing future and say a sincere thank you to those club members who have supported us in our endeavours to enhance the training and support for Umpires in particular and bowlers in general.

MEN'S SELECTION REPORT - Don Patmore

{Selectors: Don Patmore - Chairman, Grant Allford, Graham Kitto (State selector)}

The 2009-10 season saw a return to the intra-state pennant, including the State team, played on three Sundays, 25 October, 29 November and 7 February. All games were in Launceston. On 26 January, Australia day, a triangular series, without the State team, was also played in Launceston. In 2008-09 a triangular series only was played over one weekend. With these additional games in mind, the selectors chose a team which included a number of new younger players, balanced with good, experienced bowlers. Over the three days of competition in the Statewide pennant, twenty three bowlers represented the South, nine for the first time. The side on Australia Day had five changes from the 2008-09 team. Considering the number of changes and the opportunities given to the new bowlers to play at the next level, the overall results were pleasing. The final points in the pennant were: Northwest 45, North 39 and South 31, while the State team finished with 53. The team lost both games in the triangular series. In most matches, the team was very competitive, but in three games failed to finish off the twenty one ends. The two highlights were the wins against the State team on 25 October and the North West on 7 February. The team defeated the State side 80-71, winning on two rinks, a draw on another and a two shot loss on the other. The win against the North West was the final game of the pennant (Round 6). An exciting "come from behind" win by four shots with split rinks. The win was a great credit to the team after suffering its largest loss to the North in the morning match by thirty two shots, losing on all rinks. The selectors learned more about the bowlers over the pennant rounds and, with the experience gained by the new members, are confident that a more settled and better team will represent the South in the 2010-11 season.

WOMEN'S SELECTION REPORT - Ivy Sly

As Chairman of Selectors I would like to acknowledge the time and effort that selectors Irene Young, Kath Smith and Eleanor Burge have given. Sides are chosen, not only for their bowling ability, but also compatibility and team spirit. Good sportsmanship prevails at all times After three rounds of the State wide Pennant - the winning side was North, followed by South and North West.

This season, for the first time, Bowls South had a development side competing in a State wide development series which is run in the same format as the State wide pennant. I would like to thank Coach, Ross Bannister and Manager, Joy Quilliam for the time and effort they have both given to this side. The development team did extremely well winning all games and finishing on top of the series These ladies are the players of the future for Bowls South and I wish them well

Bowls Tasmania South Statisticians Report Season 2009 ~ 2010

As the 2009-2010 season draws to an end, so does my time as Statistician. Unfortunately, I will not be continuing into the 2010-2011 season, new blood is required, so all the budding lunatics that have plenty of time and not much of a social life, please put your names forward as soon as possible. You will all realize that I am joking about the requirements but the STBA needs dedicated people to ensure that all information is provided to its members a fast and accurate as possible. If I could do it - so can you. PLEASE CONSIDER HELPING OUT. I have, in general, enjoyed my period as Statistician and these past 12 or 13 years have gone by in a flash. I have met, and had conversations with, a number of very special people who have assisted me in a number of ways. I would like to thank all club statisticians and officials, also the past and present STBA board for their tolerance and consideration throughout my tenure. THANK YOU ALL. On a personal notE, I would like to thank a special person, without whose assistance I would not have been able to play at least one game of bowls a week and that person is my wife, Rosemary. For those who don't know, Rosemary would man the fax machine early in the day and start the collation and entry of the results as they came in. Rosemary would contact those who had problems with sending the result or who sent inaccurate results sheets. THANK YOU ROSEMARY. Finally, I ask that clubs tighten p in the control and accuracy of the delivery of the results. Far too many errors are being made, with very few results sheets being correctly or completely filled in. All the information requested on the sheets is required and is used in the various spreadsheets and ultimately by the STBA board and greens committee. Please consider your selection of match manager and ensure that they are aware of what is required and how to use the fax machine conectly. I have rambled on long enough. Thank you all and good bowling.

Bob Etherington Hon Statistician.
