Dear Fellow Slogan Cancel Collector:

The new year is rapidly approaching and will probably be past history by the time this issue of the Slogan Box arrives in your mail box. The cold weather is here with a vengeance - a good time to get serious about our hobby . This issue of the Slogan Box contains a listing (with illustrations) of all of the hand stamps that 1, members of our study group and one or two non-members were able to come up with. It is by no means complete but I hope that it initiates a good beginning at a serious listing of these interesting markings . I will continue to add new listings in future issues of the Slogan Box as they are received.

It is also the end of the year and we have to think about financing of the slogan Box for 1997. The plan for 1997 is to have six issues of about 15 to 20 pages each, one every two months, as our editor and others are able to produce material . I have been able to find a lower rate for photocopying ($0.0375 per copy doublesided, plus GST) but I have also been surprised at the high cost of postage (some that had been weighed and measured at one post office came back for more postage, I would think that if one arm of the post office would accept the price quoted from another arm). I think that with the small surplus left over from this year (financial statement to be included with the next issue ) and the subsidy provided by BNAPS that we should be able to lower the dues for 1997 for those that paid the full 1996 dues amount . I propose that the 1997 dues to be $15 Canadian for those who paid full dues in 1996 and $20 for new members (or those who paid partial dues in 1996). Please send cheques payable to Slogan Study Group-Steve Friedenthal.

Steven A. Friedenthal

Hand stamp slogan, commemorative and pictorial hand stamps are a logical extension to the machine slogan cancels that we have been collecting, researching and writing about for a number of years in the Slogan Box and through other publications. As well these hand stamps, I believe are also the descendants of the fancy cancels of the nineteenth century.

Some of the hand stamps are clearly slogan cancels , fitting the definition established by Rosenblat ' of advertising a specific event. Many of the others are less clear, that is they do not clearly advertise a specific event. Some are only pictorial in nature, that is they have no wording but only a representation. In some instances it may be difficult to distinguish between a hand stamp cancel and cachet . It is clear, that when a hand stamp is used to cancel a postage stamp that it is indeed a cancel , in other instances they are like auxiliary markings . All in all, I am attempting to treat these as a single grouping for the purposes of this work . The major exception, however, is first day markings. Since 1974 most of these have been pictorial or have wording . These are all listed in Chung and Narbonne's2 new catalogue of official first day covers.

As with Coutt3s work I will eventually attempt an alpha-numeric numbering system. However, to avoid confusion with the machine slogan cancels, an "H" prefix (for hand stamp) will be used in all cases . Still, there needs to be some convention for logical listing. I am suggesting that when there is wording in the cancel that, as with the Coutts system, that the alpha portion begin with the first letter of the first word . When there is no wording that the major pictorial theme be identified and the first letter of the description be used (similar to the cataloging of the numerical or date cancels when they are spelled -out). No numbers will be assigned for the current listing.

The listing for each item will include : alpha-numeric number (not yet assigned), wording and description when necessary in parenthesis , early and late dates, towns and source or refrence for the cancel (if other than Friedenthal's collection). Please note that illustrations may not be the original size.

I have not yet, but will, as no members have objected, use some of the study groups resources to advertise in BNA Topics for photocopies of hand stamps . I would like to express my sincere appreciation to those members who sent photocopies of hand stamps in their collections for inclusion in this listing : Dan Rosenblat, Cecil Coutts, John Robertson, Jean Guy Dalpe and Len Harris. I also encourage other members to forward photocopies of hand stamps in their possession for inclusion in the listing.

Unfortunately, I hae not been able to illustrate all the post marks in the same order they appear in the text . I would appreciate comments on this article/listing and do hope to improve and add to it . If anyone objects to the inclusion of an item in the listing, I would appreciate hearing from them and learning their reasons
