FORKTAIL 27 (2011): 29–38 Species limits in some Philippine birds including the Greater Flameback Chrysocolaptes lucidus N. J. COLLAR Philippine bird taxonomy is relatively conservative and in need of re-examination. A number of well-marked subspecies were selected and subjected to a simple system of scoring (Tobias et al. 2010 Ibis 152: 724–746) that grades morphological and vocal differences between allopatric taxa (exceptional character 4, major 3, medium 2, minor 1; minimum score 7 for species status). This results in the recognition or confirmation of species status for (inverted commas where a new English name is proposed) ‘Philippine Collared Dove’ Streptopelia (bitorquatus) dusumieri, ‘Philippine Green Pigeon’ Treron (pompadora) axillaris and ‘Buru Green Pigeon’ T. (p.) aromatica, Luzon Racquet-tail Prioniturus montanus, Mindanao Racquet-tail P. waterstradti, Blue-winged Raquet-tail P. verticalis, Blue-headed Raquet-tail P. platenae, Yellow-breasted Racquet-tail P. flavicans, White-throated Kingfisher Halcyon (smyrnensis) gularis (with White-breasted Kingfisher applying to H. smyrnensis), ‘Northern Silvery Kingfisher’ Alcedo (argentata) flumenicola, ‘Rufous-crowned Bee-eater’ Merops (viridis) americanus, ‘Spot-throated Flameback’ Dinopium (javense) everetti, ‘Luzon Flameback’ Chrysocolaptes (lucidus) haematribon, ‘Buff-spotted Flameback’ C. Zoological Studies 51(3): 362-371. The avian communities of Hainan I., China are poorly known and under considerable threat. In our studies at Jianfengling, Hainan I. between May 2000 and Sept. 2004, 117 bird species were recorded using fixed-radius point counts and mist-netting at 3 elevations (200, 500, and 1000 m). Numbers of bird species recorded at the 3 elevations were 67 (200 m), 67 (500 m), and 89 (1000 m), of which 15 species were recorded exclusively at 200 m, 11 at 500 m, and 24 at 1000 m. The highest bird species richness occurred at the highest elevation (1000 m). The pattern of bird species richness differed from those of continental China and the island of Taiwan. Each elevation hosted a unique assemblage of special conservation concern. Species which require mature, full-canopy forest, and are often associated with mixed-species flocks were mainly distributed at 1000 m. -
Bird Records from Laos, October 1994-August 1995
FORKTAIL 13 (1998): 33-68 Bird records from Laos, October 1994-August 1995 J. W. DUCKWORTH, R. J. TIZARD, R. J. TIMMINS, R. M. THEWLIS, W. G. ROBICHAUD and T. D. EVANS Between October 1994 and June 1995 birds were surveyed at six main areas in Laos, with incidental observations at many other sites extending until August 1995. Most effort was at four sites between 17°26' Nand 18°40' N (the Nakay Plateau, Phou Khaokhoay National Biodiversity Conservation Area (NBCA), Nam Kading NBCA and three nearby limestone outcrops), but there was extensive work on the Bolaven Plateau to the south and a brief visit to Phou Dendin NBCA in the extreme north. The latter is the first bird survey of a site much north of Vientiane since 1950. Information was collected for 15 Globally Threatened species and 28 Globally Near- Threatened species (sensu Collar et al. 1994), nine species At Risk in Laos, seven potentially so and one where threats in Laos are little known (sensu Thewlis et aL in prep.). A further Globally Near-Threatened species was recorded provisionally. Records of Grey-sided Thrush Turdus ftae and Black-headed Bunting Emberiza melanocephala were the first for Indochina. Ruddy Shelduck Tadorna ftrruginea, Lesser Cuckoo Cuculus poliocephalus,Pallas's Gull Larus ichthyaetus (from December 1995), Dunlin Calidris alpina, Long-toed Stint C subminutaand Chestnut-vented Nuthatch Sitta nagaensiswere new to Laos and Eurasian Blackbird Turdus merula to Cambodia. A total of 12 (plus one provisionally identified), nine and five (plus one provisionally identified) species were found new for North, Central and South Laos respectively. -

The current paper presents an initial analysis of the higher-level disaggregation using the Handbook of the Birds of the World/BirdLife International Illustrated Checklist of the Birds of the World Volumes 1 and 2 taxonomy, and identifies the challenges in completing the analysis to identify all of the migratory species and the corresponding Range States. Thailand Highlights 14th to 26th November 2019 (13 days) Trip Report Siamese Fireback by Forrest Rowland Trip report compiled by Tour Leader: Forrest Rowland Trip Report – RBL Thailand - Highlights 2019 2 Tour Summary Thailand has been known as a top tourist destination for quite some time. Foreigners and Ex-pats flock there for the beautiful scenery, great infrastructure, and delicious cuisine among other cultural aspects. For birders, it has recently caught up to big names like Borneo and Malaysia, in terms of respect for the avian delights it holds for visitors. Our twelve-day Highlights Tour to Thailand set out to sample a bit of the best of every major habitat type in the country, with a slight focus on the lush montane forests that hold most of the country’s specialty bird species. The tour began in Bangkok, a bustling metropolis of winding narrow roads, flyovers, towering apartment buildings, and seemingly endless people. Despite the density and throng of humanity, many of the participants on the tour were able to enjoy a Crested Goshawk flight by Forrest Rowland lovely day’s visit to the Grand Palace and historic center of Bangkok, including a fun boat ride passing by several temples. A few early arrivals also had time to bird some of the urban park settings, even picking up a species or two we did not see on the Main Tour. For most, the tour began in earnest on November 15th, with our day tour of the salt pans, mudflats, wetlands, and mangroves of the famed Pak Thale Shore bird Project, and Laem Phak Bia mangroves. -

NSS Bird Group Report-Oct 2015 October normally marks the peak passerine migration period for Singapore. Unfortunately it was also the peak time for peatland forest fires in Indonesia resulting in prolonged haze in the region. This is not a rant about our own inconvenience, but before we proceed further, spare a thought for the lost habitat for these migrants that have flown thousands of kilometres to find their wintering ground destroyed. The globally threatened Brown-chested Jungle Flycatcher at Bidadari on 3 October The list of migrants that came to our shore this month is a long one. Among the notable ones are the ever popular Black-backed Kingfisher that landed at Bidadari on 6 October. Bidadari, which is widely considered as the best place in Singapore to see migrant forest birds also played host to numerous Brown-chested Jungle Flycatchers. This globally threatened species made its first appearance on 3 October and a few seemed to have made it their wintering ground. The Siberian Blue Robin, another attractive species that occupy the same bushes and ground as the jungle flycatchers also made its first appearance on 5 October. 1 Ferruginous Flycatcher at Bidadari Other notable sightings at Bidadari include the Asian Paradise Flyacatchers that made their first appearance on 2 October, the attractive Ferruginous Flycatcher on 28 October. The short range migrant from Malaysia, the Malaysian Hawk-Cuckoo made an appearance at Bidadari on 15 October. It’s cousin the similar looking Hodgson’s Hawk-Cuckoo came from further north and consequently made its first appearance on 18 October. -

Lalhruaizela3 1,2Department of Zoology, Mizoram University 3Department of Journalism & Mass Communication, Mizoram University E-mail: *[email protected] Abstract—We conducted an avian survey to assess the avian diversity of Mizoram University campus, Aizawl for a period of 24 months. During the study a total of 3,555 no of individuals of 189 species of birds belonging to 43 families were recorded. The family Muscicapidae represented the highest species composition with 28 species followed by family Timaliidae and of MZU campus and its adjacent area, 31 (16.4%) species are winter visitors, 15 (7.9%) species are summer visitor, and two species namely, Hooded pitta (Pitta sordid) and Forest wagtail (Dendronanthus indicus) are passer migrants. The variation calculated was 3.286 and species evenness index was 0.62. The detailed of avian fauna of campus recoded and the need of conservation actions are discussed in length.
