The last complete update of this cemetery was: Made Septemer 21, 2019 by Leroy Blair Current status of cemetery: Active Point of contact for cemetery. None listed Photo by Tommy Treadway Antioch cemetery is located on Highway 31, fives miles northwest of Beebe. Tornadoes and fires have played havoc with local church records. The White County Historical Society reported in its 1967 edition of White County Heritage that “the first church was a log structure across the road from the present Presbyterian-Methodist-Baptist church and a few hundred yards behind the present store [near the old gin site].” It was built on the 9.13 acres of land owned by the Presbyterians who were here in the late 1800s. This church was called Macedonia. The old part of the Antioch Cemetery is also a part of that plat. The Historical Society published a detailed history of the Antioch church in the ‘67 Heritage. At that time the three denominations worked loyally together yet retained a separate identity. On the first Sunday of each month the Baptist had their pastor. On the second and fourth Sundays the pulpit was filled by a Methodist preacher. The Presbyterian pastor delivered the third Sunday message. The cemetery was surveyed in April 2000 by Historical Society member Tommy H. Treadway, Updates have been made by Society member Leroy Blair several times in since the first list was made. Herakleides 1.1 (third century B.C.)' Studying cultural change in ancient societies requires looking not only for the historical or artistic record, but also for cultural context: for focal points of identity construction and cultural practice, such as were provided by sanctuaries in ancient Greece. The manner in which heterogeneous objects were dedicated and viewed together, and the appearance of the sanctuary as a whole can be taken as records of specific interests and patterns of behaviour and of the historical conditions that created them. In this sense, the Athenian Akropolis was always taken as a visible manifestation of the classical period of Athens in the fifth century B.C. However, its history after the death of Alexander the Great should be of more interest than recent studies 2 suggest. What was happening in Athens' most important sanctuary and what were the Athenians' interests concerning it during the Macedonian occupation? The existing epigraphical, literary and sculptural evidence of this period has not been studied together as a record of cultural change up to now. My purpose is to do so and to develop some broader ideas concerning the significance of the Akropolis for the Athenians after 323 and into the third century.
