Environmental Adaptation of Forages in Lao PDR
PROCEEDINGS OF THE THIRD REGIONAL MEETING OF THE FSP Environmental adaptation of forages in Lao PDR Phonepaseuth Phengsavanh1 and Viengsavanh Phimphachanhvongsod2 In Lao PDR, livestock production is almost totally a smallholder farming practice and is a vital component of livelihood security. Animals generally graze on native forages (grasses, shrubs, legumes, and tree leaves) that are available in forests and grasslands. However, native grass is abundant only during the wet season. Dry season feed shortages are common, resulting in severe animal feeding problems for farmers throughout the country. There are currently few, if any, alternative feed sources. For many years, some Hmong farmers, who live on the fertile highland soils in Luang Phabang and Xieng Khouang, have fed grazing animals Napier grass (Pennisetum purpureum) as a supplement. Some farmers in Xieng Khouang have recently started to use Ruzi grass (Brachiaria ruziziensis) for the same purpose. However, in general, very few farmers in Lao PDR plant forages. This does not mean that there is no demand. The severity of feed resource limitations in some provinces (especially Luang Phabang and Xieng Khouang) is creating a huge interest in planted forages among farmers. To meet this demand, the Department of Livestock and Fisheries, in collaboration with the Forages for Smallholders Project, established forage nurseries at five different agro-ecological sites in four provinces to evaluate forage adaptation for subsequent on- farm testing at Namsuang (Vientiane municipality), Houakhoth and Houaphai (Luang Phabang), Ban Km 32 (Oudomxay), and Khinak (Champassak). Site descriptions The soil pH (1:5 water) at these sites varied from very acid to neutral (Table 1). -

Erosion Control on Unconsolidated Volcanic Ash Deposits at Rabaul
Scientific registration n° : 2146 Symposium n° : 31 Presentation : poster Erosion control on unconsolidated volcanic ash deposits at Rabaul, Papua New Guinea Contrôle de l'érosion sur des dépôts de cendres volcaniques non consolidées à Rabaul, Papouasie, Nouvelle Guinée HUMPHREY Bill (1), IGUA Passinghan (1) (1) Lowlands Agricultural Experiment Station, PO Keravat, ENBP, Papua New Guinea The volcanic ash deposited in and around Rabaul, Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the 1994 eruptions is very erodible. The soil surface is heavily rilled and gullies as deep as 10 m have developed in the fresh ash. In some areas, the disrupted drainage patterns have resulted in erosion of the developed soil under the ash. Civil engineers have determined that the ash bed slopes must be stabilised with vegetation before work to restore Rabaul town can begin. This has prompted a program of plantings on the ash beds aimed at building up soil organic matter and decreasing runoff and ash flow during heavy rainfall. On-going farming systems research into the management of sloping lands, conducted jointly by the PNG Department of Agriculture and Livestock, the IBSRAM PACIFICLAND network, and the EU Pacific Regional Agriculture Programme is providing a variety of strategies to stabilise these ash beds. These strategies include planted hedgerow barriers and living check-dam structures, and cultivated broadacre plantings of appropriate species. Preliminary plantings have shown leguminous ground covers such as Macroptilium atropurpureum and Vigna luteola can be established in the ash. Leguminous trees such as Gliricidia sepium and Acacia auriculiformis have also been successful. However, the formation of a dense sward and the buildup of organic matter require grasses and durable mulches that are high in tannins. -

PROFILE FOR MANAGEMENT OF THE HABITATS AND RELATED ECOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL RESOURCE VALUES OF DAUAN ISLAND January 2013 Prepared by 3D Environmental for Torres Strait Regional Authority Land & Sea Management Unit Cover image: 3D Environmental (2013) EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The granite rock pile that forms Dauan, along with nearby Saibai and Boigu Islands, form the Northern Island Group of Torres Strait, located approximately 150 km north of Thursday Island (see Figure 1). Whilst Saibai and Boigu Island are extensions of the alluvial Fly Platform, geologically part of the Papua New Guinea mainland, Dauan is formed on continental basement rock which extends northward from Cape York Peninsula to Mabadauan Hill on the south-west coast of Papua New Guinea. A total of 14 vegetation communities, within ten broad vegetation groups and 14 regional ecosystems are recognised on the island. The total known flora of comprises 402 species (14 ferns, 388 angiosperms), with 317 native and 85 naturalised species. Nine plant species are considered threatened at the commonwealth and state levels and a further 25 species considered to have significance at a regional level. As for the majority of Torres Strait Islands there is a lack of systematic survey of fauna habitats on the island. A desktop review identified 135 fauna species that are reported to occur on Dauan. This can be compared with the 384 terrestrial fauna species that have been reported for the broader Torres Strait Island group. The Dauan fauna comprises 20 reptiles, 100 birds, 3 frogs and 12 mammals. Of these, one reptile, one bird and four mammal species are introduced. -

International Journal of Agricultural Technology 14(3):377-388. Abstract Pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal inoculation on growth and tuber yield of Flemingia vestita under greenhouse condition.Three native AMF species (Acaulospora scrobiculata, Glomus aggregatum and Glomus luteum) and three commercial species (Acaulospora laevis, Glomus fasciculatum and Glomus macrocarpum) were used for inoculation. The results indicated that AMF inoculation increases plant growth and tuber yield compared to uninoculated ones. Plant growth in the form of plant height, leaf number and leaf area was greatest in A. scrobiculata inoculated plants, while root dry weight, tuber yield and P acquisition in roots and shoots was greatest in G. macrocarpum inoculated plants. Shoot dry weight was highest in G. aggregatum inoculated plants. From the present investigation, it was observed that F. vestita responds positively to AMF inoculation, the level of response however, depends on AMF species.
