SWEDEN 728 SWEDEN SWEDEN 1. GENERAL INFORMATION 1.1. General Overview Sweden is a long narrow country in the northern part of Europe and borders Norway in the west, Finland in the north east and the Baltic Sea in the South and east, as shown in Figure 1. The total length from north to south is 1,600 kilometres and the land area is 410,932 square kilometres. The size of the area is the third in Western Europe after France and Spain. The area is almost twice as big as that of Great Britain. The north-west part of Sweden consist of mountains with a slope towards the east. There are many rivers in the north and lakes are scattered all over the country. Sweden’s coast line is more than 2,000 kilometres long. FIG. 1. Location of Sweden in Europe. The northern boundary is about 250 kilometres north of the north polar circle 66°30´, but because of the Gulf Stream coming from west, the climate is not of a polar type. The average temperature over the year varies between -1.5 °C in the north to 7.8 °C in the south. The population data in Table 1 show a very slow increase of the population. In 1998, Sweden had 8.9 million inhabitants. The population density is 21.6 persons per square kilometres, however, the northern part of Sweden is sparsely populated with smaller than 20% of the inhabitants living in the northern half of the country. SHAPIRO HE RICH INSPIRING life of C. Richard (“Dick”) Soderberg, TInstitute Professor emeritus at the Massachusetts Insti- tute of Technology came to an end at age eighty-four. With roots in the simple realities of a boyhood in a fishing family on a remote Swedish island in the Baltic Sea, his qualities of mind and character led him first into a distinguished industrial career as an engineer in his adopted country, the United States. He went on to an illustrious career in engi- neering education, with remarkable consulting activities on the side. His years were marked by an expansive and seem- ingly unlimited passion to learn, by a capacity to teach, by a superb intuitive sense of design and rightness, by an unflag- ging breadth of intellectual interest, by a deep understand- ing of the social and historical forces set in motion by tech- nology, and by a warmth and nobility of spirit that endeared him to his colleagues and friends. Three major phases in his professional life were espe- cially notable. First, at the Westinghouse Electric & Manu- facturing Company he was instrumental in solving the prob- lems of steam turbines as these progressed to ever larger sizes and higher operating pressures and temperatures. -

STAL-turbin till Tekniska Museet Av Carl-Göran Nilson I Tekniska Museets maskinhall kan man numera studera ett utom ordentligt fint nyförvärv, en ångturbin, närmare bestämt en STAL- turbin av mottryckstyp (fig 1 och not 1). Denna förnämliga expo nent för den frejdiga, på uppfinningar baserade industrialisering, som pågick i Sverige kring sekelskiftet, har skänkts till Tekniska Museet av Höganäs AB varifrån den nu pensionerats. På sin nya plats står den intill museets stora ångmaskin, byggd år 1832, som likaledes kommer från Höganäs. Man kan därför direkt få en bild av ett sekels ångteknisk utveckling! Turbinen har renoverats av ABB’s båda dotterbolag, ABB STAL, som tillverkade turbinen år 1942 och AB GENERATION. Renoveringen, transporten till museet och uppställningen där har helt generöst bekostats av ABB. Turbinen förtjänar helt visst en närmare beskrivning, men innan vi går in härpå, bör vi ägna några ord åt dess upphovsmän, upp- finnarbröderna Birger och Fredrik Ljungström. De båda bröderna var söner till Patrik Ljungström och hans hustru Amala f Falck. Paret fick 8 barn, 6 pojkar och två flickor. Birger (f 1872-06-04) och Fredrik (f 1875-06-16) var yngst i ska ran. Patrik var lantmätare och tillika en mycket skicklig instru- mentmakare. Han uppfann och tillverkade många listiga lantmä- teriinstrument. Självaste John Ericsson, en gång lantmätare, berömde dessa instrument. På utställningar, både i Sverige och utomlands, erövrade de många priser av hög valör. Även Kungl Vetenskaps Akademiens guldmedalj kom Patrik till del. Efter många år som lantmätare i Göteborgstrakten blev Patrik år 1872 kartograf vid Allmänna Ekonomiska Kartverket med pla cering i Stockholm, en befattning som han valt delvis med bar nens skolgång i tankarna. -

Technology licensing is an alternative approach for market entry in which establishing position can be regarded as a long-term process of relationship development between actors. According to the network approach applied in the present study, foreign MNEs can obtain a strategic position in national industrial networks by complex interaction with industrial actors. The actors, e.g. firms, goverrnnent agencies and other organizations, are connected throu& exchange relationships. The exchange of resources, i.e. a number of specific aspects of investment within those relationships, are important elements in the position development activities and result in a high degree of strength in the networks. However, in the market, it was recognized rather early on that the multiengineering nature of the technology should play an important role in the construction work. Case examples are given in which the foreign MIN!3 begin in the dominant technology position. An operational model is advanced which illustratesthe development of position through licensing relationships. Empirital data on the Swedish MNE, ABB Carbon in Korea is analyzed by this model. -

Placed in the inlet to a steam turbine is a filter, a steam strainer, which separates particles and larger objects from the steam. These particles and objects will cause solid particle erosion in the actual turbine if they pass by.
