HEADS UP ON EXPLORER’S LIFE A simple medallion in the Nicholson Museum collection has led to the discovery of an intriguing story about an early 20th century explorer and socialite, writes Chris Jones.     THE COMMERCIAL LILLIAN O’NEIL Lillian O’Neil (b. 1985, Melbourne) works in large-scale, kaleidoscopic, analogue collage cut from pre-digital books and magazines. The ongoing search for and mass accumulation of material is an important component of her process. Her vast library of material forms a kind of atlas of human activities, interests and beliefs from which she cuts images. O’Neil’s works bring latent content to a conscious plane through both poetic constraint and accumulated fragments. Poetic constraint allows her to make unexpected combinations by re-contextualising imagery while accumulated fragments provide immense variation within generalised repetition. The outcomes of these two distinct threads are a kind of pop-sci-fi imagery structured by architectonic human figures and a decidedly more monochromatic melancholia. In the former, humans are the players within an ambiguous narrative. In the latter, humans are absent and her imagery operates more like a mood or texture of thought. Both types sit side-by-side in her practice. 2018 marks a year of significant international research for O'Neil. In April, she will be traveling to the United Kingdom to attend Collage, Montage, Assemblage: Collected and Composite Forms, 1700 – Present, a major conference at the University of Edinburgh, followed by a period of research at the National Archives, London, supported by a grant from the Australia Council for the Arts. Later in the year, she will be taking up a three-month studio residency at Youkobo Art Space, Tokyo, supported by Asialink and Creative Victoria. O'Neil completed a Master of Fine Art at Sydney College of the Arts, The University of Sydney in 2012 supervised by artist, Mikala Dwyer.

  • Exhibition Essay
    NEVERWHERE Neverwhere brings together the work of eight contemporary Australian artists to disturb distinctions between our real and imagined selves, between authentic and fantastical scenarios. Works in this exhibition perform and postulate identity however narratives are largely informed by external – often mysterious – forces, both seen and unseen. The characters and identities represented here all seem to have fallen through the cracks of reality and landed somewhere different, into an underside; somewhere that is Neverwhere.1 Neverwhere might be read here as Australia, of course, and the works suggestive of how nations, identities and selves are implied, inflected and inferred. At the exhibition’s very outset, Kathy Temin’s Audition for a pair of Koalas (2004) sets up this proposition, while simultaneously complicating it. While she was undertaking a residency in New York, the artist advertised for American actors to attend auditions and impersonate a pair of koalas mating. Most people that came to her auditions had never seen a koala in the flesh, of course, and brought to the work their own projections and fantasies about how a koala – and, by extension, an Australian – might behave. Behaviour of marginal characters is highlighted in Captain Thunderbolt’s sisters, a video Mikala Dwyer made with Justene Williams in 2010. The two artists, dressed in striped prison outfits, bushranger helmets and high heels, clamber around a circular bunker on Sydney’s Cockatoo Island – the site of a former prison and reform school for errant girls. Either invoking, or possessed by, the dead girls’ spirits, the artists bash violently at the metal fixtures; citing Australia’s colonial history at the same time hammering societal boundaries.
