Principality Building Society, Principality Buildings, Queen Street, Cardiff, CF10 1UA. principality.co.uk WELCOME Welcome to the Arms Park for this afternoon’s Principality Premiership game between Cardiff and Ebbw Vale. Four games into the season and four wins on the board following last weekend’s six try victory over Cross Keys. The game really was split into two halves. The first full of mistakes from both teams with only one try from the home side going in a point behind. The second half saw a change of fortunes as the Blue & Black dominated. Ben Thomas on his first full start for Cardiff pulled the strings and the team responded with five second half tries, including a rare sight here- a push over try. Rhys Carre was deservedly named as Man of the Match. Steve Law and the coaching team have certainly got the team going in the right direction. He faces some welcome headaches in the coming weeks with players like Dan Crimmins, Miles Normandale, James Murphy, James Sheekey up front and Jack Phillips, Adam Jones and James Beal in the backline coming back into reckoning for selection following injuries. It is a nice problem to have. Our visitors today will pose new questions for the Blue & Blacks, in fact the last victory against the Steelmen was in 2010, and that is the last victory either home or away. Ebbw have traditionally been challenging at the top of the league for the last few seasons and they will be keen to extend their winning run over the Blue & Blacks. Their season hasn’t started as well as they would have liked. A win against Bargoed in the first game of the season has been followed by three defeats, the last against Newport a last minute defeat. That doesn’t mean that this will make them any easier to beat. Despite a few players retiring and moving onto to other clubs the Steelmen will have a strong determination to show what the men from the top of the Gwent Valley are capable of. So we look forward to a challenging game and welcome the players, coaching staff, committee and supporters to the Arms Park this afternoon. Enjoy the rugby! The Blue & Blacks came out of the blocks as fast as they had the previous week. The forwards were doing the hard work and gaining the hard yards before they released the backline. Ben Thomas, making his first start for the home side, made a sublime break before timing his pass to Will Rees-Hole who scored under the sticks. Thomas added the extras. The game then seemed to drift for ten minutes as both sides made a series of mistakes when in good position to get the scoreboard moving. Eventually the Keys did get on the board. The visitors were awarded a scrum in the twenty-two after a knock on and from the set-piece a simple scissors move put Barney Nightingale through a slack Cardiff defence to score. Josh Prosser, who had earlier missed two penalty kicks at goal, landed the conversion. And the Keys went ahead after another Cardiff mistake. This time a forward rumble ended with hooker Robert Jones going over under the posts. Cardiff got back to within a point just before half time with two Thomas penalties but the half time talk would have been all about cutting out the errors. And they did just that straight from the kick off. Rhys Carre carried the ball up field as he had all the first half but this time when the ball came to Thomas he again created a hole to cruise through and when he only had the full back to beat he found support from Lewis Jones on his shoulder to score. Thomas added the conversion, but couldn’t land the touchline conversion of Owen Lane’s try that had been created by a Jack Roberts break before feeding the wing to score. TOGETHER we will ALL ACHIEVE www.cardiffrfc.com #BLUEANDBLACKS By now the pack were getting on top and with the back row working as a unit and nullifying the Keys attacks the ball seemed to be more in Cardiff hands than in Keys. And they were to provide a rare sight at Cardiff, a push over try that secured the bonus point, James Sheekey at the back of a five-metre scrum that had been stopped illegally twice before. That didn’t stop Cardiff playing though as they looked to attack from everywhere. Will Rees-Hole completed his hat-trick as he scored twice after great interplay between forwards and backs. The first created by Ian Jenkins bullocking run into the twenty-two. The other prop, Carre, who was named man of the match, setting up Cardiff’s sixth and Rees-Hole’s third. Keys had the final word as Nathan Trowbridge crossed but it was the Blue & Blacks day. CARDIFF RFC BALL TEAMS Cardiff RFC are delighted to have the support of Cardiff Schools Under 11s as our Ball Teams for this season. With the British & Irish Cup games now over for this period we can get back to the business of the East Division and the second meeting between the Blue & Blacks and the Black and Ambers this season. The first game back in August saw the Blue & Blacks start a run of four consecutive wins that set Cardiff on their way to second place in the table. On the day Cardiff ran in four tries including a hat-trick for Pat Lewis in what was an open game of rugby in the sunshine. Since that run times have been a little tougher for the Blue & Blacks. Three consecutive losses have seen us slip fourth in the table. The last game here had the scoreboard showing Pontypridd running away with the game at the end.
