This time you will need to find out about an inspirational Muslim’s life, then write up what you have found out. You must write at least 5 sentences. Please do not write more than two paragraphs. Yusuf Islam Easier version: Yusuf Islam Yusif Islam, who is often known by his stage name Cat Stevens, is a British singer. He was very successful in the 1960s and 70s. In 1977, after nearly drowning, he converted to Islam and changed his name from Steven to Yusuf (Arabic for Joseph). After this, he auctioned all of his guitars for charity and left his musical career to devote himself to charitable causes in the Muslim community. He has founded a charity called Small Kindness and has helped start many Muslim schools in the UK. His is British. • He became a musician and used a stage name: Cat Stevens. He • His 1967 debut album reached the top 10 in the UK, and its title song "Matthew and Son" reached number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. He had an incredibly successful music career with famous songs like Moonshadow, Wild World and Father & Son. He has lots of hits and received many awards. • Stevens nearly drowned in an accident in Malibu in 1975. When he realised he was about to die he thought, “Oh God! If you save me, I'll work for you.'" He looked into Buddhism; Zen and I Ching, numerology, tarot cards and astrology, but when his brother David gave him a copy of the Qu'ran, Stevens began to convert to Islam in 1977. He then adopted the name Yusuf Islam the following year. • In 1979, he auctioned all of his guitars for charity. He has since bought back at least one of these guitars as a result of the efforts of his son Yoriyos, and left his musical career to devote himself to educational and philanthropic causes in the Muslim community. • He has received two honorary doctorates and awards for promoting peace • In 2006, he returned to pop music – releasing his first new studio album of new pop songs in 28 years, titled An Other Cup. With that release and subsequent ones, he dropped the surname "Islam" from the album cover art – using the stage name Yusuf. The Yusuf Islam Foundation The Yusuf Islam Foundation, a registered charity founded in the name of Yusuf Islam (formerly pop star, Cat Stevens), is an umbrella body that works in education, the alleviation of poverty and community development. It has under its wing two of the most successful independent faith schools in London - Islamia Girl's Secondary School and Brondesbury College.
