Manastash Ridge Observatory History by Julie Lutz MRO Site Survey: Western Washington has a well-deserved reputation for clouds and rainy weather. Hence, the desirability of an observatory for professional astronomers in Washington state was not instantly obvious. However, a drive to the east side of the Cascade mountains yields much better weather. Long time University of Washington (UW) astronomer Theodor Jacobson started thinking about convenient telescope access for faculty and students when the university decided to expand astronomy dramatically in the mid-1960s. When the first UW astronomy department chair George Wallerstein arrived in 1965, he immediately started a campaign to get a research telescope. Wallerstein came to UW from Berkeley where faculty and Ph.D. students had ready access to telescopes, including a productive 20-inch. He felt strongly that a high-quality research telescope in Washington state would help create a high-quality astronomy department. A grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) provided enough money to purchase automated cameras for a site survey and a 16-inch Boller and Chivens telescope. The eastern side of the Cascade mountains was the obvious region to survey for the best telescope location. The site had to be within reasonable driving distance of the UW Seattle campus and have road access on at least a dirt/gravel track. Founding telescope engineer and jack-of-all-trades Ed Mannery surveyed severall locations during 1965/66. The best site turned out to be Manastash Ridge on US Forest Service land southwest of Ellensberg. However, Rattlesnake Mountain on the Hanford Reservation (owned by the US Department of Energy) outside of Richland had a developed road and readily-available electricity. -

Ice Core Records – From Volcanoes to Supernovas The Astronomers Tycho Brahe and Johannes Kepler Tycho Brahe (1546-1601, shown at left) was a nobleman from Denmark who made astronomy his life's work because he was so impressed when, as a boy, he saw an eclipse of the Sun take place at exactly the time it was predicted. Tycho's life's work in astronomy consisted of measuring the positions of the stars, planets, Moon, and Sun, every night and day possible, and carefully recording these measurements, year after year. Johannes Kepler (1571-1630, below right) came from a poor German family. He did not have it easy growing Tycho Brahe up. His father was a soldier, who was killed in a war, and his mother (who was once accused of witchcraft) did not treat him well. Kepler was taken out of school when he was a boy so that he could make money for the family by working as a waiter in an inn. As a young man Kepler studied theology and science, and discovered that he liked science better. He became an accomplished mathematician and a persistent and determined calculator. He was driven to find an explanation for order in the universe. He was convinced that the order of the planets and their movement through the sky could be explained through mathematical calculation and careful thinking. Johannes Kepler Tycho wanted to study science so that he could learn how to predict eclipses. He studied mathematics and astronomy in Germany. Then, in 1571, when he was 25, Tycho built his own observatory on an island (the King of Denmark gave him the island and some additional money just for that purpose). -

Within a few years, the Observatory became the world center of research in the new science of astrophysics, which is the application of principles of physics to astronomical objects beyond the earth. SCIENTIFIC ACHIEVEMENTS The Mount Wilson 100-inch reflector dominated dis- coveries in astronomy from its beginning in 1918 until the dedication of the Palomar 200-inch reflector in 1948. (Both telescopes are primarily the result of the lifework of one man — George Ellery Hale.) Many of the foundations of modern astrophysics were set down by work with this telescope. One of the most important results was the discovery that the intrinsic luminosities (total light output) of the stars could be found by inspection of the record made when starlight is dispersed into a spectrum by a prism or a grating. These so-called spectroscopic absolute lumi- nosities, discovered at Mount Wilson and developed for over forty years, opened the way to an understanding of the evolution of the stars and eventually to their ages. Perhaps the most important scientific discovery of the 20th century is that we live in an expanding Universe. -

From the Compiler I compiled the first edition of this index 25 years ago after a frustrating search to find an article that I knew existed and that I really needed. It was a long search without even annual indices to help. By the time I found it, I had run across a dozen other articles that I’d forgotten about but was glad to see again. It was clear that there are a lot of good articles buried in back issues, but that without some sort of index they’d stay lost. I had recently bought an Apple II computer and was receptive to projects that would let me become more familiar with its word processing program. A cumulative index seemed a reasonable project that would be instructive while not consuming too much time. Hah! I did learn some useful solutions to word-processing problems I hadn’t previously known exist, but it certainly did consume more time than I’d imagined by a factor of a dozen or so. You too have probably reached the point where you’ve invested so much time in a project that it’s psychologically easier to finish it than admit defeat. That’s how the first index came to be, and that’s why I’ve kept it up to date. -

Federal Department for Economic Affairs, Education and Research EAER State Secretariat for Education, Research and Innovation SERI 50 years of existence of the European Southern Observatory (ESO) 30 years of Swiss membership with the ESO The European Southern Observatory (ESO) was founded in Paris on 5 October 1962. Exactly half a century later, on 5 October 2012, Switzerland organised a com- memoration ceremony at the University of Bern to mark ESO’s 50 years of existence and 30 years of Swiss membership with the ESO. This article provides a brief summary of the history and milestones of Swiss member- ship with the ESO as well as an overview of the most important achievements and challenges. Switzerland’s route to ESO membership Nearly twenty years after the ESO was founded, the time was ripe for Switzerland to apply for membership with the ESO. The driving forces on the academic side included the Universi- ty of Geneva and the University of Basel, which wanted to gain access to the most advanced astronomical research available. In 1980, the Federal Council submitted its Dispatch on Swiss membership with the ESO to the Federal Assembly. In 1981, the Federal Assembly adopted a federal decree endorsing Swiss membership with the ESO. In 1982, the Swiss Confederation filed the official documents for ESO membership in Paris. In 1982, Switzerland paid the initial membership fee and, in 1983, the first year’s member- ship contributions. High points of Swiss participation In 1987, the Federal Council issued a federal decree on Swiss participation in the ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT) to be built at the Paranal Observatory in the Chilean Atacama Desert. -

In This Issue . The bluish gray area is not from ion- pg. 5 The Radio Sky ized Oxygen (as found in the Veil Nebula); rather it is mostly a pg. 11 Kepler cloud of carbon dust, which reflects the blue light from the nearby pg. 12 President’s Report star. The result is an emission/reflection nebula 1500 light years distant and accessible from the suburbs with a small telescope. Mauri Rosenthal imaged this from his backyard in Scarsdale with a guided Questar 3.5” telescope over two nights in November using CLS (broadband) and H-alpha (narrowband) filters. Total exposure time was 9.5 hours. The commercially produced Sunspotter is a solar projection system that allows for safer solar observations by several individuals simultaneously. Educational uses for the Sunspotter are reviewed, and the ability of the instrument to track trends in the sunspot cycle (compared to a standard telescope and the American Relative Sunspot Number (Ra)) is examined. 1. Introduction One of the areas where students and amateur astronomers have provided a valuable service to the discipline is in the field of solar observing. For example, Elizabeth Brown led the Solar Section of the Liverpool Astronomical Society in the 1880s, and then the British Astronomical Association in the 1890s. She aggregated the sunspot counts and drawings of other amateurs for use by the Greenwich Royal Observatory and other scientists interested in the growing field of solar astronomy (Brück 2009). In the United States, Vassar College astronomy professor Maria Mitchell set her students to work at first observing and then photographing the Sun as early as 1874 (Mitchell 1890). These observations were published in Scientific American nearly monthly between January 1875 and January 1881.
