  • Scene Set for Bright Breeze in Deauville Cont
SATURDAY, 11 MAY 2019 SCENE SET FOR BRIGHT VAN DYCK PUTS DERBY PROSPECTS ON THE LINE AT LINGFIELD By Tom Frary BREEZE IN DEAUVILLE At this time of year, there is barely time to reflect as the races that count come thick and fast. It is not even a week since Newmarket=s Guineas were played out in what seemed like a wintry grip, but already we have a new, red-hot Derby favourite. Sir Dragonet (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) forced his way past his Ballydoyle peers at a rain-hit Chester and now it is up to stablemate Anthony Van Dyck (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to regain kudos with the blue riband on the horizon. Sadly, Lingfield=s Derby Trial no longer carries Group 3 status and there have been many moons since High-Rise (Ire), Kahyasi (Ire) and Slip Anchor (GB) won en route to Derby glory, but last year=s G2 Futurity S. winner is the classiest participant in this listed Classic pointer for some time. • War and Sacrifice in the Post-9/11 Era
Social & Demographic Trends October 5, 2011 The Military-Civilian Gap War and Sacrifice in the Post-9/11 Era FOR FURTHER INFORMATION, CONTACT Pew Social & Demographic Trends Tel (202) 419-4372 1615 L St., N.W., Suite 700 Washington, D.C. 20036 www.pewsocialtrends.org PREFACE America’s post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are unique. Never before has this nation been engaged in conflicts for so long. And never before has it waged sustained warfare with so small a share of its population carrying the fight. This report sets out to explore a series of questions that arise from these historical anomalies. It does so on the strength of two nationwide surveys the Pew Research Center conducted in the late summer of 2011, as the 10th anniversary of the start of the war in Afghanistan approached. One survey was conducted among a nationally representative sample of 1,853 military veterans, including 712 who served on active duty in the period after the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The other was among a nationally representative sample of 2,003 American adults. The report compares and contrasts the attitudes of post-9/11 veterans, pre-9/11 veterans and the general public on a wide range of matters, including sacrifice; burden sharing; patriotism; the worth of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq; the efficiency of the military and the effectiveness of modern military tactics; the best way to fight terrorism; the desirability of a return of the military draft; the nature of America’s place in the world; and the gaps in understanding between the military and civilians.

  • ZADIG the BABYLONIAN by Francois Marie Arouet De Voltaire
ZADIG THE BABYLONIAN By Francois Marie Arouet De Voltaire THE BLIND OF ONE EYE There lived at Babylon, in the reign of King Moabdar, a young man named Zadig, of a good natural disposition, strengthened and improved by education. Though rich and young, he had learned to moderate his passions; he had nothing stiff or affected in his behavior, he did not pretend to examine every action by the strict rules of reason, but was always ready to make proper allowances for the weakness of mankind. It was matter of surprise that, notwithstanding his sprightly wit, he never exposed by his raillery those vague, incoherent, and noisy discourses, those rash censures, ignorant decisions, coarse jests, and all that empty jingle of words which at Babylon went by the name of conversation. He had learned, in the first book of Zoroaster, that self love is a football swelled with wind, from which, when pierced, the most terrible tempests issue forth. Above all, Zadig never boasted of his conquests among the women, nor affected to entertain a contemptible opinion of the fair sex. He was generous, and was never afraid of obliging the ungrateful; remembering the grand precept of Zoroaster, "When thou eatest, give to the dogs, should they even bite thee." He was as wise as it is possible for man to be, for he sought to live with the wise. Instructed in the sciences of the ancient Chaldeans, he understood the principles of natural philosophy, such as they were then supposed to be; and knew as much of metaphysics as hath ever been known in any age, that is, little or nothing at all.

  • Action Within a Relationship: a Phenomenology of Sacrifice
Sacrifice – Action within a Relationship: A Phenomenology of Sacrifice Claudia Mariéle Wulf 1 Introduction A young woman had become entangled in drug culture. Nothing had warned her about the consequences of drug abuse for the rest of her life, nor about the effects it was to have on her parents and younger sister. She had closed her- self off from her family and friends, so her mother had no longer any access to her. Her mother prayed. This, however, was not enough. Slowly but surely, the mother began to change. First, she stopped eating what she most enjoyed. It was a silent offering for her daughter, who failed to understand. Instead, the girl replied: “It doesn’t affect me whether you eat what you like or not!”. Then her mother started copying her daughter’s way of dressing. She roamed the streets in old and shabby shoes, she dyed her hair black like her daughter had done, something which was quite alien to herself. Initially, her daughter just laughed at her. Then she fell silent. She knew what it meant to her mother to be a laugh- ing stock for the people, because of her shoddy appearance. When she fully realized that her mother had made these sacrifices in order to show her how close she was to her, her mother’s love touched her and she returned home. Is this the sort of sacrifice we are talking about here? Does sacrifice mean giving up yourself in order to save somebody else? Does it mean offering your- self as a sacrifice to God? Does God want – or even ask for – such sacrifice? The example shows that in order to be meaningful, a sacrifice has to be related to someone: To God, or to another human being.

  • Late Poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz
Modes of Reading Texts, Objects, and Images: Late Poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz by Olga Ponichtera A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto © Copyright by Olga Ponichtera 2015 Modes of Reading Texts, Objects, and Images: Late Poetry of Tadeusz Różewicz Olga Ponichtera Doctor of Philosophy Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation explores the late oeuvre of Tadeusz Różewicz (1921-2014), a world- renowned Polish poet, dramatist, and prose writer. It focuses primarily on three poetic and multi-genre volumes published after the political turn of 1989, namely: Mother Departs (Matka Odchodzi) (1999), professor’s knife (nożyk profesora) (2001), and Buy a Pig in a Poke: work in progress (Kup kota w worku: work in progress) (2008). The abovementioned works are chosen as exemplars of the writer’s authorial strategies / modes of reading praxis, prescribed by Różewicz for his ideal audience. These strategies simultaneously reveal the poet himself as a reader (of his own texts and the works of other authors). This study defines an author’s late style as a response to the cognitive and aesthetic evaluation of one’s life’s work, artistic legacy, and metaphysical angst of mortality. Różewicz’s late works are characterized by a tension between recognition and reconciliation to closure, and difficulty with it and/or opposition to it. Authorial construction of lyrical subjectivity as a reader, and modes of textual construction are the central questions under analysis. This study examines both, Tadeusz Różewicz as a reader, and the authorial strategies/ modes he creates to guide the reading praxis of the authorial audience.

AHe came out of it well,@ Baffert said Sunday morning. AIt takes about a week to determine, so I=m going to come back next weekend and see. But I don=t see anything discouraging right now.@ Baffert continued, ACan he win the Triple Crown? I don=t know. But he=s the Derby winner, and that=s all that matters. I was coming in here, thinking, I wasn=t sure [if Medina Spirit could win the Derby], everything had to go perfect for him. We were going to go to the lead, and see what happened.
