Please check-in at the registration desk on the 2nd floor to receive your ID badge, Summit Guide, final schedule and Goody Bag.

Beat the Monday morning rush and register on Sunday from 3:00-9:00pm. If you can’t make it on Sunday, no problem! The registration desk will re-open on Monday at 6:30am for the duration of the event.

We have enlisted the help of some of your fellow dance teachers to help make this event the best it can be. These teachers will be on site to help you with any questions you may have and will also be gathering feedback from the attendees on how to make the Summit better next year! The Summit Ambassadors can be identified by their custom red jackets.

For your comfort and safety, we recommend dancewear or loose-fitting clothes for most sessions. Although some rooms will have dance floors, you may be dancing on carpet. Please bring appropriate footwear. Please also bring and wear “layers” as the Hotel may be cold. Water will be provided in each room but feel free to bring your own as well. You may also want to bring plenty of business cards with you for networking purposes and to enter raffles. The dress for the Fashion Forward, Cocktail Party and Capezio A.C.E. Award Competition is casual.

The Exhibit Hall features 90+ exhibitors who make this wonderful Summit possible! Please be sure to visit the exhibitors and see the latest in dance apparel, costumes, shoes, music, videos, accessories, flooring, backdrops, insurance, travel and much more!

Most exhibitors will have Summit “specials”, free giveaways and special raffles throughout the Summit. For your convenience, we recommend packing an extra bag for transporting your new purchases and free gifts home!

We are excited to announce that we will once again be having the Hall of Fame Performance Stage. Make sure to drop by the stage to see some of the area studios, local companies and college performances! A full list of performances will be available at check-in!

*NEW* Meet other dance teachers from around the country! On Monday, August 5th from 12:30- 1:30pm ambassador, Nancy Giles, will answer any questions you have and make sure you leave with some new friends. This session is highly recommended if you are attending the Summit for the first time or you are by yourself!

The Summit-State of Dance. Join us on Wednesday, August 7th at 5:00p, in an unprecedented event as dance luminaries share their opinion on the State of Dance in 2013. Hear from a panel of choreographers, teachers, industry professionals and dancers as they discuss where they think dance is going in the coming years. Panel will include Mia Michaels, Denise Wall, Benoit-Swan Pouffer, Gregg Russell, Judy Rice, Kim Delgrosso and Karen Hildebrand. It is sure to be an enlightening event you won’t want to miss!

Want to win $1,000 in cash? By participating in the Summit Dance Card you could! Qualifying is easy and the odds of winning are great. All you need to do is visit each participating Exhibitor to see what treasures they have to offer and get your game card punched! Once your card is punched by all participating exhibitors, drop off your card at the registration desk to be entered in the $1,000 drawing! Look for your Summit Dance Card in your registration packet. The winner will be announced on Wednesday, August 7th at 2:00pm on the Hall of Fame Performance Stage. You must be present to win.

The Dance Teacher Summit is proud to announce our economic relief package, the Dance Dollar! Dance Dollars are the equivalent of cash in the Exhibit Hall. Look for your Dance Dollars in your registration packet. You will also have the opportunity to win additional Dance Dollars throughout the event! Dance Dollars are only good at participating vendors for on-site purchases, not future purchases.

Match & Mingle. In an effort to help you make new friends, each ID badge will have a number, find the matching number on someone else’s ID badge and then stop by the registration desk with your new friend. Everyone who finds their matching number will be entered to win a free tuition to the 2014 Summit! Drawing will take place on the Hall of Fame Stage on Wednesday, August 7th at 2pm. The Dance Teacher Summit is committed to growing and nurturing the next generation of dance educators. As such, we are proud to offer two FREE College Outreach Classes. If you know any college age dancers, be it college bound or recent graduate, invite them to come take one or both of our FREE classes at the Hilton New York. They can take a hip hop class with Tawanna Hall-Charlton on Monday, August 5th from 12:00-1:30pm and/or a jazz funk class with Bobby Newberry on Wednesday, August 7th from 12:30-2:00pm. Passes also allow them to walk the exhibit hall floor! Students can register by:

Andy Blankenbuehler Broadway Workshop Andy will be teaching a professional level musical theatre combination. While teaching a combo, he will break down his creative process and discuss the ways in which character and music drive choreography for the Broadway stage.

Broadway: Composition & Musicality This class will focus on analyzing musical composition to improve storytelling and character development in your dancing. Andy will be breaking down many pieces of classic Broadway music in order to analyze compositional elements that inform our choreography. He will be teaching sections of movement from some of his shows, as well as work by such greats as and to further illustrate the many ways in which we can use the music as a blueprint for our work.

Anneliese Burns Wilson Pointe - Ready or Not? Objective evaluations for determining if students are ready for pointe work, why these criteria are important, and how to help students reach their potential in these areas.

Reach New Heights The Science Behind Jumping. There's more to jumping then a good plié. Find out how to improve your students’ jumps and what some common errors are really telling you.

Anthony Morigerato Tap: Diagnosing Common Problems The problems that a tap dancer often faces in their technique have nothing to do with what the feet are actually doing; it is coming from something above the feet. This class will identify common issues tap dancers face in not being able to technically articulate sounds. The ideas of weight distribution, shift of weight, body alignment, mental approach and musical approach will be discussed. There will be a portion of the class dedicated to teachers presenting problems that they face while teaching that will be discussed and addressed. Any students are welcome to accompany a teacher so that hands on demonstration can be made as to what to look for in diagnosing a common problem.

Tap: Building Great Exercises Technique is the building block essential to lasting excellence in any dance form. This class will work to address strategies in coming up with exercises for tap dancers and offer example exercises to take home and offer to your students.

Musicality Basics A class for all teachers! This class will be a musical lesson in the theory of music and how it is applied to dance in general. Time signatures, counting, dynamics, instrumentation and orchestration will be discussed from a musical perspective and how to implement these musical ideas into sound choreographic approaches. This class is not specific to any dance form it is only specific to choreographers that choreograph to music.

Broadway Connection 1 & 2 Broadway Connection discusses how to effectively inspire, create and establish strong Musical Theatre Programs for dancers of all ages. Attendees learn, try, and leave with vocal, acting and theatrical dance exercises and material. Studios currently offering triple threat curriculum can use this unique workshop to bolster and advance their curriculum! Brandon Leffer from Cinderella will teach Monday’s class and Stephen Carrasco from Kinky Boots will teach Tuesday’s workshop!

Benoit-Swan Pouffer Contemporary Ballet Join former Cedar Lake Artistic Director, Benoit-Swan Pouffer, for an energizing contemporary ballet class that will leave you refreshed and inspired.

Beverly Spell Creative Movement Create an optimum educational environment for your preschool classes with tips from Beverly F. Spell, creator of Leap ’N Learn. Learn how important it is to implement various modalities into your movement classes.

Gimmie A Beat! Increase musical awareness in your preschool movement classes with tips from Leap ’N Learn and composer Scott Killian.

Camille Rommett Floor-Barre® & Ballet Class This class will offer a unique opportunity to share Zena Rommett’s insights and teachings of the world- renowned Floor-Barre® Technique. Floor-Barre®, a ballet-based technique, sculpts the body creating long exquisite lines. The dancer’s physical structure is consistently centered, lengthened and strengthened. David Howard Master Ballet Class This master class with David will explore techniques designed to expand the classical vocabulary, movement potential and kinetic awareness of your students.

Debbi Dee Time Steps & Stylization All new! Time steps for the intermediate/advanced tapper. These new time steps created by Debbi Dee can be used in many different stylizations of tap choreography. From a flashy show stopper time step, to an intricate footwork time step, they will all be covered in this tap favorite and back-by-request class favorite.

Tap: “How To” You have learned the warm-ups, you have learned the technique, you have learned the rudiments...now we put them to use in combinations featuring different stylizations in tap. From the buck and wing, to syncopation to rhythm tap, learn what makes these stylizations so popular and useful in your studios. This class is geared for the Intermediate/advanced level.

Deborah Vogel Anatomy of a Habit A process of changing your mind to what you know you really want! Following the guidelines of Dr. Joe Dispenza, come learn how to make new habits stick.

Fascia and Flexibility Improve your stretch! Explore the world of fascia and how it influences your flexibility.

Denise Wall Body Placement Review Denise will show you how to incorporate new principles and exercises into your classes to help improve your dancers’ body awareness, inspiration, and joy of movement. Learn how she breaks down the body in a way your students can understand. This class will be a review of last year’s materials. Denise’s subsequent classes will build off of the materials presented during this session.

Beginner Jazz for 6-12 year olds Teaching students right from the beginning is very important! Hear how Denise breaks down the more advanced concepts for her younger students. It is never too early to do it right!

Transitions Denise will share her time-tested formulas for transitions. Through different combinations she will break down how to get your students to use their plie. She will also give combinations that will help your students with their transitions, making sure they hit each movement.

Desiree Robbins Footwork for Jazz Class will cover and focus on musicality, weight and direction change, and balance, using a wide variety of choreographic styles ranging from jazz to Latin, through isolations, across the floor, and center floor combinations.

Jazz Class for a Year This class will serve as a guideline for having structure throughout the year while steadily challenging your dancers to achieve a higher level of technique in jazz.

Doug Caldwell Lyrical Join Doug for an invigorating classical lyrical class complete with a feel good warm-up and combination.

Eileen Juric BalletBarreNone - Level 1 New ideas and concepts covered!!“Bridging the Gap” Level 1 (ages 9-12.) This fun and interactive new way to teach ballet seamlessly smoothes the harsh transition often experienced at this age by eliminating the barre. It highlights and extracts the essence of ballet revealing the mechanisms of all movement. Frank Hatchett Jazz/V.O.P Frank combines his unique funky groove with jumps and turns in an engaging high-energy style routine. As in all Frank's classes, the heat is definitely on!

Finis Jhung Turns and Jumps Dance like a pro! Learn turn and jump combinations that will help enhance your ballet technique and make your dancers stronger. More Turns and Jumps Just in case you didn’t get enough in “Turns and Jumps”, Finis will give you more combinations to take home and use with your students!

Gregg Russell Tap: A Tribute to Henry Le Tang A spirited tap class, paying homage to the "Dr. of Broadway." Including original repertoire and inspired progressions and combinations by the late master. Tap: Stronger and Faster How can you make your tap dancers stronger and faster? Visit this action packed class and see how you can improve these traits with any level of student. A fun challenge indeed!

Hip Hop: Move Your Body A fun-filled hip-hop class, focusing on across-the-floor combinations. Styles will include house, floating, video, and of course break-dancing. Word!

Joanne Chapman Basic Acro & Safety Learn how to safely teach and spot basic acrobatic tricks. You do not need prior acro training and there will be demonstrators!

Advanced Acro & Safety While building on the principals set forth in “Basic Acro & Safety” learn how to take your dancers one step further. These tricks can enhance your specialty routines. There will be demonstrators on hand!

Judy Rice Building Ballet 1 & 2 This is a two-part class. Day one Judy will explain and demonstrate how she builds a class backwards from the Grand Allegro to Plies in order to make proper sense of how a class should intellectually and physically progress. Every class she starts by choosing six or seven elements, which can be steps, rules or concepts, and incorporate them throughout; by creating the exercises from the end of the class to the beginning there ends up being a logical progression and repetition of material. Class two we will execute the material.

Ballet Technique Join Judy as she discusses common technique problems and gives exercises how to address them in your class! Bring your own questions/problems and she will address them, too!

Judy Ann Bassing Beginner Tap 1 & 2 Go back to basics with this high energy tap class. Teaching a strong foundation in the basics is important to develop strong tappers. Judy will teach how to keep your tap classes fun and educational; from musicality to how to teach pullbacks to a fun age appropriate routine, get ideas for your tap classes all year long! Beginner Tap 2 will be a continuation of Beginner Tap 1.

Katy Spreadbury Ballet for Babies This class will focus on the dialogue used in introducing the youngest dancer to some of the fundamental principles of ballet. We will explore the use of imagery, games and visual tools in the classroom as aids in exciting and inspiring your dancers ages 3-5.

Beyond Baby Ballet This class will focus on dealing with the unique set of challenges a teacher faces when trying to transition the classroom environment from that of the playful and imaginative to one more heavily grounded in tradition. Using Ballet For Babies as its platform, Beyond Baby Ballet will examine ways to wean your dancers ages 6-9 off of imagery, introduce fundamental vocabulary and concepts, and how to keep the fun alive as the work becomes more difficult and a much more dominant focus of class.

Linda Farrell Pilates for Dancers Class will include classic Pilates Mat exercises from beginner to intermediate to advanced, with variations to add variety to the workout. Cueing will include important Pilates principles such as breathing, stabilization, differentiation, and opposition.

Core Conditioning Class will include classic Pilates, Yoga exercises and Floor Barre exercises to condition the entire body with an emphasis on building core strength and body awareness.

Lisa Johnson-Willingham Horton Technique Created by Alvin Ailey’s mentor, Lester Horton, this is a major codified modern dance technique reputed to fortify, stretch, and strengthen the human body. Horton aims to correct physical faults and prepare you for any type of dancing you may wish to follow.

Modern Choreography A multi-level class designed to improve harmony of movement through an expressive flowing series of combinations integrating modern, Horton, and ballet. Choreography builds throughout the class to fine-tune the body and develop artistic and technical performance. Students should have some prior experience with Horton and/or ballet.

Luigi Luigi Technique 5, 6, 7, 8. Join legendary teacher Luigi as he teaches his famous warm-up and a combo!

Jazz Just keep moving! Luigi will present a classic jazz combo.

Maria Hanley Teaching Toddlers: 18 months - 3 years Toddler dance is a joy to teach, but it’s important to have the necessary tools in your pocket to shape a successful class. In this session, attendees will recognize what to expect from toddler classes, how to lead grown-ups through class in a friendly way, and how to design a class that is fun for both toddlers and their grown-ups. Learn songs, games, stories, and prop dances that will leave you excited to spend your time with this age group!

Creative Ballet: 3 - 4 year olds Refresh your ballet curriculum by exploring creative ways to teach basic ballet steps. This session offers useful structures and strategies that will guide you in teaching this age group. Discover easy ways to incorporate ballet vocabulary and build confidence in your young dancers by giving them the power of choice. Come prepared to learn a lot, and laugh a lot, too!

Melinda Sullivan Untapped Learn fundamentals without the shoes. Become a musician with your feet and incorporate some fancy footwork into your dancing. No tap shoes allowed. Hard-soled shoes with a heel are best, such as a boot or an oxford. The class will consist of hoofing technique and then a combination emphasizing musicality.

Mia Michaels Contemporary Experience Mia’s passion, dedication and love first-hand in this master class. Both classes will be the same combo. In consideration for everyone, we ask that you only take one of the classes.

Michele Assaf Warm-Up This class is the complete warm-up, a combination of modern, classical, jazz, and physical therapy foundations. This will elevate your heart rate to its optimum cardiovascular zone and prepare your muscular system for center work without overworking the muscles. This is an intermediate to advanced warm-up; however it can be modified to teach beginners.

Mike Minery Tap Technique Exercises Mike will teach short combos that focus on individual steps and help to improve your student’s technique. Learn combos you can use every week!

Paula Morgan Structure and Alignment The concept of ideal posture and placement for all forms of dance is necessary for peak performance. This class will offer a brief overview prior to expanding in greater detail the concept of integrating breathing to achieve optimum alignment.

Warm-Up & Exercises This warm-up is geared toward training a dancer’s body and is designed to achieve the best strength, flexibility, technique, movement and knowledge. After a dancer is properly constructed, the movement becomes inevitable. This class will teach the second half of Level 1's warm-up plus give teachers specific supplemental exercises to work on with their dancers to increase strength in key areas.

Feet & Legs Paula has a specific approach to train a dancer’s feet and legs. Learn how to identify and work with different structural issues such as hyper extended legs, bow legs and/or knock knees. This class will also discuss her theories behind creating the perfect dancer’s foot while giving exercises to achieve the desired results.

Robin Dawn Ryan 50 Plus! A no judgment, old school jazz class for the 50 plus dance teacher to just dance!! Rock out to some old school tunes as we bring it back to the “good ole days!” of spandex and high leotards. Big hair optional.

Sheila Barker Adv/Beg Jazz Sheila shares original lyrical choreography and tips on how to build your students’ technique while fostering individual style and artistry.

Teen Lyrical Sheila shares her signature style in progressions and choreography for a teen lyrical class. Find ways to help your younger dancers release tension and feel more comfortable learning lyrical technique and improve their focus, range of motion and freedom of movement.

Sonya Tayeh Contemporary Join Sonya for a fast-paced, inspiring contemporary class. A great way to jump-start the Summit!

Sue Hamilton & Jess LeProtto Acting for Dancers (presented by Disney) In the world of auditions for musical theater and performance events, dancers are often asked to create a character and read from the script. Many times, dancers wish they were more prepared when the acting work comes their way. There are specific acting and audition tools that dancers can develop, and this workshop shares this insight. Learning and applying these tools - and making strong choices in the moment - will set the dancer apart, giving him or her, the unique edge to stand out.

Singing for Dancers Dancers are being asked to sing at auditions more than ever before. Whether it’s backup vocals, 16 bars, or a full song, dancers must be prepared to sing on the spot. Oftentimes, dancers wish they were more prepared when the vocal work comes their way. At the Walt Disney Company, casting directors and show directors consistently look for strong dancers who are also strong singers. The double threat and triple threat performers have an advantage. There are specific vocal audition tools that dancers can develop, and this workshop shares this insight. Learning and applying these tools will set the dancer apart, giving him or her opportunity to shine in a unique way.

Tawanna Hall-Charlton Beginner Hip-Hop For the beginner hip-hop dancer who is looking to find a new groove! Advanced Hip-Hop Experience the fresh energy of Tawanna’s unique, eclectic style, as she infuses hip-hop with funk.

Tawney Giles TawneyTots Chat Geared towards the young competition dancer, Tawney will share ten valuable techniques she uses to teach advanced tots. These tips help young and serious dancers not only form good habits that stick with them as they develop, but tricks that keep the classroom fun and focused.

TawneyTots Technique Based on TawneyTots Chat, join Tawney as she demonstrates and elaborates on the techniques and principals used to produce award winning young dancers. Suggested that you take TawneyTots Chat first.

Thom Cobb Improvisation Dancing at the moment, dancing in the moment. Participants will have opportunities to explore the processes of discovering, creating and performing movement spontaneously. We will develop improvisational skills by means of selected movement exercises, interactive discussions and observations and performing structured and semi- structured improvisational scenarios.

Jazz-Based Swing Let’s meet up to experience and experiment with some jazz-based swing dance steps and syncopated rhythms! Much of this material is useful on a personal level or can be organized into your own studio combinations or staged choreography. The movements of swing (vernacular) dance and the feeling it evokes is body friendly and easily adaptable to be age and developmentally appropriate. So…Let’s boogie!

Modern This master class will start with a total body technique warm-up leading to the development of a movement combination suitable for one person or as a duet. The movement material for this class comes from an eclectic approach to Modern Dance (Contemporary, Post-Modern) and almost 40 years in the profession. Most important is that the participants “DANCE” this class from beginning to end and find something of value to take with them as they leave the Summit. Music for this class will include a variety of artists including James Brown, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Craig Kupka, and Andy Hasenpflug, to mention a few. Recommended for Intermediate to Advanced Level Dancers. Tiffany Henderson Toddlers: Ages 2-6 Keep your baby dance program fresh and exciting for both teachers and dancers. Discover fresh, new tap, jazz, and ballet curriculum elements for your preschool-aged dance classes. Also, learn priceless teaching tips that will help both new and seasoned toddler dance teachers. This is a movement class. Please bring all appropriate dance shoes.

Recital Choreography: Ages 2-6 Wow your audience with baby recital dances that make your littlest stars shine! Come and learn age appropriate recital dances that your toddlers will love.
