A New Chronology of the Construction and Restoration of the Medici Guardaroba in the Palazzo Vecchio, Florence
A NEW CHRONOLOGY OF THE CONSTRUCTION AND RESTORATION OF THE MEDICI GUARDAROBA IN THE PALAZZO VECCHIO, FLORENCE by Mark Rosen One of the most unusual projects overseen by Giorgio Vasari in the Palazzo Vecchio in Flor- ence, the Guardaroba is a trapezoidal room containing a late-sixteenth-century cycle of fi fty-three geographical maps of the earth affi xed in two tiers to the front of a series of wooden cabinets (fi g. 1). Vasari published a detailed program for the Guardaroba project in the second edition of “Le vite de’ piu eccellenti pittori scultori e architettori” in 15681, at a moment when the project, begun in 1563, was still in development. The program defi nes it as a complete cosmography of the known universe, with maps, globes, painted constellations, illustrations of fl ora and fauna, and portraits of great historical leaders. Rarities and artworks placed inside the cabinets would act together with this custom-designed imagery to refl ect back on the name and charismatic persona of Vasari’s patron, Cosimo I de’ Medici (1519–1574). The idea and program behind the Medici Guardaroba had roots in late medieval studioli — small, womb-like study spaces that valorized private contemplation and collecting through complex humanistic decoration. Yet the goal of this new space was to be a public theater for the court’s cosmography and its power to collect and sort the duchy’s fi nest objects. The incomplete status of the room today — which includes only a series of empty cabinets, a terrestrial globe (1564–1568) by the Dominican scientist Egnazio Danti, and a cycle of maps painted by Danti (between 1563 and 1575) and Stefano Buonsignori (from 1576 through c. -

Peer-Reviewed Images as Data: Cultural Analytics and Aby Warburg’s Mnemosyne Stefka Hristova Abstract: In this paper, by extending the methodology of media archaeology to the praxis of Cultural Analytics/Media Visualization I ask how have we compared multitude of diverse images and what can we learn about the narratives that these comparisons allow? I turn to the work of Aby Warburg who attempted to organize close to two thousand images in his Mnemosyne Atlas. In comparing contemporary methods of image data visualization through cultural analytics method of remapping and the turn of the century methodology developed by Warburg under the working title of the “iconology of intervals,” I examine the shifts and continuities that have shaped informational aesthetics as well as data-driven narratives. Furthermore, in drawing parallels between contemporary Cultural Analytics/Media Visualization techniques, and Aby Warburg’s Atlas, I argue that contextual and image color data knowledge should continue to be important for digital art history. More specifically, I take the case study of Warburg’s Panel 45 in order to explore what we can learn through different visualization techniques about the role of color in the representation of violence and the promise of prosperous civil society. (Signature)…………………………………………………………………………….. 1 Abstract The church of Santo Spirito in Florence is universally accepted as one of the architectural works of Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446). It is nevertheless surprising that contrary to such buildings as San Lorenzo or the Old Sacristy, the church has received relatively little scholarly attention. Most scholarship continues to rely upon the testimony of Brunelleschi’s earliest biographer, Antonio di Tuccio Manetti, to establish an administrative and artistic initiation date for the project in the middle of Brunelleschi’s career, around 1428. Through an exhaustive analysis of the biographer’s account, and subsequent comparison to the extant documentary evidence from the period, I have been able to establish that construction actually began at a considerably later date, around 1440. It is specifically during the two and half decades after Brunelleschi’s death in 1446 that very little is known about the proceedings of the project. A largely unpublished archival source which records the machinations of the Opera (works committee) of Santo Spirito from 1446-1461, sheds considerable light on the progress of construction during this period, as well as on the role of the Opera in the realization of the church. -

Among his many apprentices was Michelangelo. Biography Early years Ghirlandaio's full name is given as Domenico di Tommaso di Currado di Doffo Bigordi. The occupation of his father Tommaso Bigordi and his uncle Antonio in 1451 was given as "'setaiuolo a minuto,' that is, dealers of silks and related objects in small quantities." He was the eldest of six children born to Tommaso Bigordi by his first wife Mona Antonia; of these, only Domenico and his brothers and collaborators Davide and Benedetto survived childhood. Tommaso had two more children by his second wife, also named Antonia, whom he married in 1464. Domenico's half-sister Alessandra (b. 1475) married the painter Bastiano Mainardi in 1494.[1] Domenico was at first apprenticed to a jeweller or a goldsmith, most likely his own father. The nickname "Il Ghirlandaio" (garland-maker) came to Domenico from his father, a goldsmith who was famed for creating the metallic garland-like necklaces worn by Florentine women. In his father's shop, Domenico is said to have made portraits of the passers-by, and he was eventually apprenticed to Alessio Baldovinetti to study painting and mosaic. -

Garrard eminist scholars have effectively unmasked the misogynist messages of the Fstatues that occupy and patrol the main public square of Florence — most conspicuously, Benvenuto Cellini’s Perseus Slaying Medusa and Giovanni da Bologna’s Rape of a Sabine Woman (Figs. 1, 20). In groundbreaking essays on those statues, Yael Even and Margaret Carroll brought to light the absolutist patriarchal control that was expressed through images of sexual violence.1 The purpose of art, in this way of thinking, was to bolster power by demonstrating its effect. Discussing Cellini’s brutal representation of the decapitated Medusa, Even connected the artist’s gratuitous inclusion of the dismembered body with his psychosexual concerns, and the display of Medusa’s gory head with a terrifying female archetype that is now seen to be under masculine control. PASSEPARTOUR 2019 FIRENZE OLTRARNO THE KEYS OF ACCESSIBILITY Florence is a world heritage site and as such it must be accessible to all, without exclusion. Florence welcomes people with physical disabilities due to an abundance of pedestrian areas and accessible historical and artistic sites. It is also unde- niable that some routes of the city-center - similar to many other historical cities throughout the world - may present some difficulties for people using wheelchairs: for example narrow streets, tiny sidewalks that are not easily passable or not homogeneous pavement. To address this problem and provide information on which paths are the best to follow for people with physical disabilities, the Municipality of Florence in collaboration with Kinoa Srl have designed and published this Guide. The PASSEPARTOUR project is made up of four volumes, each describing four different tourist itineraries "without barriers". In addition, the guide provides a map of the historical city-center, highlighting all the areas that can be navigated with complete autonomy, or with the support of a helper. In addition, Kinoa has developed the navigation app Kimap, which acts as a companion tool to the guide for the mobility of disabled people. Kimap can be downloaded for free on every smartphone: the app shows the most accessible path to reach your desired destination and is constantly updated. We hope that this project will contribute to improve the tourist experi- ence for those visiting our marvellous City, opening the doors to its extraordinary heritage.
