CLENCH CURATOR OF MOW.USKS, HARVARD UNIVERSITY INTRODUCTION The following report is based largely upon the extensive collection of Pacific island mollusks in Bernice P. Bishop Museum. The study was made possible by a Yale-Bishop Museum Fellowship which was granted for the winter of 1940-1941. Upon my return to Cambridge, the collection of mollusks in my charge was reviewed for additional data for the two families considered in this paper. I am exceedingly grateful to the Yale University Committee and to the Trustees of Bishop Museum for this fellowship and for the rare opportunity to study in the Hawaiian Islands. The value to the individual scientist of an opportunity of this sort far transcends the published results of a single report. Such an experience with the chance of seeing new and different animals and plants in the field and under totally different conditions naturally tends to shift preconceived viewpoints obtained from other field experience. -
The Diversity of Land Snail Fauna in Chonburi Province, Eastern Thailand

Sci.) 42 : 256 - 263 (2008) The Diversity of Land Snail Fauna in Chonburi Province, Eastern Thailand Pratin Boonngam*, Pongrat Dumrongrojwattana and Surin Matchacheep ABSTRACT Land snails diversity were investigated in several habitats in Chonburi Province, Eastern Thailand. Snails were collected from 14 areas throughout Chonburi Province. A total of 16 families 29 genera and 48 species were recorded, 22 of which had been previously reported. The others could be identified into genus level and at least nine of them are being proposed as new to science. This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Four species from this assemblage belong to the land caenogastropod superfamily Cyclophoroidea. Three of these are assigned to genera with Recent representatives in Southeast Asia and are described as new species: Cyclophorus hangmonensis Raheem & Schneider sp. nov. (Cyclophoridae: Cyclophorini), Alycaeus sonlaensis Raheem & Schneider sp. nov. (Cyclophoridae: Alycaeinae) and Tortulosa naggsi Raheem & Schneider sp. nov (Pupinidae: Pupinellinae). These fossil species represent the earliest records for their genera and are thus of great value for calibrating molecular phylogenies of the Cyclophoroidea. The fourth species is represented only by poorly preserved fragments and is retained in open nomenclature in the Cyclophoridae. While extant Cyclophoroidea have their greatest diversity in Tropical Asia, the oldest fossils described to date from the region are from the Late Pleistocene. -

Hasil pengamatan menunjukkan bahwa jumlah jenis keong darat dari Sumatera tercatat 280 jenis, 33 diantaranya endemik dan kurang dari 40% dari jumlah total tersimpan di MZB. Delapan jenis merupakan “catatan baru” (new record) bagi Sumatera, yakni Lagochilus obliquistriatum, Diplommatina calcarata, D. cyclostoma, Philalanka micromphala, Coneoplecta bandongensis, Liardetia densetorta, L. viridula dan Landouria monticola yang dikoleksi dari Pesawahan, Provinsi Lampung, Sumatra Selatan. Tulisan ini merangkum seluruh informasi tentang keberadaan dan status keong darat di Sumatera, beberapa jenis berstatus endemik, namun beberapa juga terbatas sebarannya, bahkan tergolong langka dan terancam punah. Kata kunci: status, catatan baru, keong darat, Sumatera ABSTRACT Based on MZB’s collection and references of the terrestrial snail from Sumatra, we evaluate the recent occurence of the snail and its status. The total number of the existing terrestrial snail from Sumatra is 280 species, 33 species of which are endemic for Sumatra and only less than 40% of the total species number are deposited in MZB. It is also noted that eight species collected from Pesawahan, Lampung Province, South Sumatra are new records for Sumatra, i.e Lagochilus obliquistriatum, Diplommatina calcarata, D.
