2012-13 Season LSU Shreveport's Name Was Still Mentioned on the Final Day of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA National Tournament 4/22/13 Blankenship, Davis take LABC top honors BATON ROUGE, La. - The Louisiana Association of Basketball Coaches selected LSU Shreveport's Kyle Blankenship as their choice as the 2013 Louisiana Small College Coach of the Year Award while also naming LSUS' Brandon Davis as the 2013 Louisiana Small College Player of the Year the LABC announced on Tuesday. These awards are selected annually by the men's basketball coaches in the State of Louisiana. Blankenship and Davis led the Pilots to their first ever appearance in the NAIA's Fab Four in Kansas City, Missouri. They will be presented their awards at the LABC's 39th Annual Awards Banquet, which will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013, at 6 p.m. at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Baton Rouge. 4/2/13 Coach Blankenship named a finalist for National Coach of the Year BOSTON, MA -- The finalists for 2013 Don Meyer National Coach of the Year award were announced on Monday. The finalists include Kyle Blankenship (LSU Shreveport), Donnie Bostwick (S.A.G.U.), Chris Briggs (Georgetown), Tommy Brown (Lee), Bob Burchard (Columbia), Bill Czech (Hope International), Shawn Huse (Montana State Northern), Steve Knight (William Carey), Rocky Lamar (MidAmerica Nazarene), Paul Peck (Lindsey Wilson), Brandon Rinta (Lewis-Clark State), Jim Sanderson (Faulkner), Jack Schrader (Culver-Stockton), Doug Tolin (Oklahoma Baptist) and Sam Weaver (Philander Smith) The award is presented annually to the top NAIA men's basketball coach. The award is named in honor of the one game's winningest coaches. In February of 2010 Meyer announced his retirement from coaching but continues at Northern State in the role of Regents Distinguished Professor and Assistant to the President. In 38 seasons at Hamline, Lipscomb and Northern State, he compiled an astounding 923-324 records. The 2013 award will be presented on April 5 at the CollegeInsider.com awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the men's NCAA Basketball Championship. 2013 DON MEYER AWARD FINALISTS Kyle Blankenship LSU Shreveport Donnie Bostwick S.A.G.U. Chris Briggs Georgetown Tommy Brown Lee Bob Burchard Columbia Bill Czech Hope International Shawn Huse Montana State Northern Steve Knight William Carey Rocky Lamar MidAmerica Nazarene Paul Peck Lindsey Wilson Brandon Rinta Lewis-Clark State Jim Sanderson Faulkner Jack Schrader Culver-Stockton Doug Tolin Oklahoma Baptist Sam Weaver Philander Smith Davis named to All-American Second Team KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2012 – 13 Division I Men's Basketball All-Americans on Wednesday. The selections are made by the NAIA Men's Basketball Coaches' Association All-America Committee and comprises a First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention Team. There are 10 members on each of the first three All-America teams. Brandon Davis was the lone LSU Shreveport Pilots selected to this year's All-American Team as a second teamer. Davis, a junior from Pomona, California, became eligible after the first semester of the season and pounced on the scene as he poured in 31 points and grabbed 20 rebounds in his first game as a Pilot in January. He proved to be as good as advertised in his Pilot debut as he played in 24 games and helped lead the Pilots to a Fab Four appearance in the Buffalo Funds-NAIA National Championship Tournament. During his 24-games this season Davis averaged 22.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game as he led the NAIA with 19 double-doubles including ending the season with nine straight double-doubles. He netted double figures in every game he played in this season including scoring 30 or more points in five games and 20 or more in 16. 3/20/13 LSU Shreveport earns Sportsmanship Award Milum, Davis selected to All-Tournament Team KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the All- Tournament Team for the 2013 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball National Championship. The 10-member team, which includes the tournament Most Valuable Player, was announced shortly after the conclusion of Tuesday's (March 19) NAIA national championship game held at Municipal Auditorium. Also listed as part of the All-Tournament Team are the winners of the Charles Stevenson Hustle Award, presented to the player exhibiting the greatest determination and hustle throughout the tournament, and the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award, given to the team to display the most sportsmanship during its play at the national tournament. The Charles A. Krigel Award is presented to the coach of the squad that earns the Naismith-Liston Sportsmanship Award, while the Chuck Walden Trophy is presented to the honorary coaches of the national championship squad. The Frank Cramer Award, which is presented annually to the person or persons who has done the most for the NAIA Basketball Championship for a period of years, was given to Artie (Zeke) Lang. Along with the All-Tournament award recipients, the NAIA has announced its honorees as the 2008-09 NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Year and the 2008-09 Rawlings-NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Coach of the Year. Even after the final buzzer sounded on the 2012-13 season LSU Shreveport's name was still mentioned on the final day of the Buffalo Funds-NAIA National Tournament. Rodney Milum and Brandon Davis were both named to the All-Tournament Team at this year's tournament while as a team the Pilots claimed to Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award. The Pilots Head Coach Kyle Blankenship was recognized with the Charles A. Krigel Award which is presented to the coach of the squad that earns the Naismith-Liston Sportsmanship Award for his leadership to his team. The Sportsmanship Award says a lot more than who wins on the court but also who will likely be the winners off the court as it is given to the team that displays the best sportsmanship of any of the teams at the tournament. The Pilots were quick to lend a helping hand when one of their opponents hit the floor and are also one of the first ones to wipe the sweat off of the floor while showing respect to fans, tournament officials, coaches and the referees. The Sportsmanship Award shows a true sign of character which the Pilots show all season long. The tradition of Good Sportsmanship continues at LSU Shreveport. Davis and Milum was one of the top scoring duos in the country and their performance in the National Tournament was no different as Davis dominated averaging a double-double for the tournament pouring in 25.5 points per game and pulling down 13.5 rebounds per game while Milum shot 44-percent from beyond the arc as he averaged 23.5 points per game. All-Tournament Team Jordan Dressler, Columbia (Mo.) Marshawn Norris, Culver-Stockton (Mo.) Vic Moses, Georgetown (Ky.) Monty Wilson, Georgetown (Ky.) Brandon Davis, LSU Shreveport (La.) The Tigers will advance to the championship game to play Southwestern Assemblies of God (Texas) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. CDT. The event is held at Municipal Auditorium. Wilson was the Tigers’ hero for the second-straight game as he hit the go-ahead jumper with 31 seconds left of an 86-82 quarterfinal-round triumph over Culver-Stockton (Mo.). He finished the game with 32 points, eight rebounds and five assists and hit 12-of-20 shots from the field. “We wanted to try and attack the rim and get into the lane, but it just so happened that Monty came in on the back side right there and banged another shot,” said Georgetown head coach Chris Briggs. That’s what he does. He’s a gamer and he wants the ball when it’s crunch time.” Georgetown (27-8) trailed 80-70 with 6:01 remaining following a three-pointer by the Pilots’ Rodney Milum, but used a 13-2 run over the next 3:36 to take an 83-82 lead. It was the first lead of the game for the Tigers, who had trailed for all but three times to that point and were behind since the 12:42 mark of the second half. The teams traded one-point leads five times over the next 2:16, capped off by a pair of free throws from the Pilots’ Tevin Hall with 8.6 seconds remaining after Garel Craig had pushed Georgetown in front with 35 seconds left on a runner in the lane.
