ENDER'S GAME by Orson Scott Card Chapter 1 -- Third "I've watched through his eyes, I've listened through his ears, and tell you he's the one. Or at least as close as we're going to get." "That's what you said about the brother." "The brother tested out impossible. For other reasons. Nothing to do with his ability." "Same with the sister. And there are doubts about him. He's too malleable. Too willing to submerge himself in someone else's will." "Not if the other person is his enemy." "So what do we do? Surround him with enemies all the time?" "If we have to." "I thought you said you liked this kid." "If the buggers get him, they'll make me look like his favorite uncle." "All right. We're saving the world, after all. Take him." *** The monitor lady smiled very nicely and tousled his hair and said, "Andrew, I suppose by now you're just absolutely sick of having that horrid monitor. Well, I have good news for you. That monitor is going to come out today. We're going to just take it right out, and it won't hurt a bit." Ender nodded. It was a lie, of course, that it wouldn't hurt a bit. But since adults always said it when it was going to hurt, he could count on that statement as an accurate prediction of the future. Sometimes lies were more dependable than the truth. "So if you'll just come over here, Andrew, just sit right up here on the examining table.

The Life of Saint Paul of the Cross Founder of the Congregation of the Cross and Passion 1694-1775 Volume 2 – 1741-1775 Father Louis Therese of Jesus Agonizing, C.P. 1873 Fr. Simon Woods, C.P. (Translated from the third French Edition) 1959 (INDEX TO VOLUME TWO ON FINAL PAGES) CHAPTER TWENTY MISSIONS TO THE SOLDIERS AND INHABITANTS OF ORBETELLO, PORTERCOLE AND PORTO LONGONE 1741 - 1742 There is a similarity between a Religious Order and an immortal soul. Each has its own special grace that prepares it for that work that Almighty God wills it to accomplish. Now that the Congregation of the Passion has its official mandate from the Holy See “to preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified,” we can examine what is this grace, what is its efficacy, and what will be the fruits it will reap. Soon, we will see Paul of the Cross take his flight from his aery on the heights of Monte Argentario, and spread the wings of an apostle. It is almost meridian of this fiery sun whose flame will enkindle the world. Paul is forty-seven years of age - the age of maturity, of vitality, the age that produces more thorough and more lasting results than the age of youth. Moreover, he was, by an extraordinary grace, endowed with a rich disposition which never withers with age nor fades with time, but ripens to a richer and more fruitful maturity. He will carry the fire of his zeal undimmed, even to his very last years, and more often than in the preceding pages we will relate one miracle after another.

Daniel Boone Regional Library Book Discussion Kit DBRL One READ Selection 2005 Callaway County / Columbia / Southern Boone County Public Libraries www.dbrl.org Ender’s Game by Orson Scott Card Page 1 Tips for Book Discussions from Washington Center for the Book at Seattle Public Library Reading Critically Books that make excellent choices for discussion groups have a good plot, well-drawn characters, and a polished style. These books usually present the author’s view of an important truth and not infrequently send a message to the reader. Good books for discussion move the reader and stay in the mind long after the book is read and the discussion is over. These books can be read more than once, and each time we learn something new. Reading for a book discussion—whether you are the leader or simply a participant—differs from reading purely for pleasure. As you read a book chosen for a discussion, ask questions and mark down important pages you might want to refer back to. Make notes like, "Is this significant?" or "Why does the author include this?" Making notes as you go slows down your reading but gives you a better sense of what the book is really about and saves you the time of searching out important passages later. Obviously, asking questions as you go means you don't know the answer yet, and often you never do discover the answers. But during discussion of your questions, others may provide insight for you. Don't be afraid to ask hard questions because often the author is presenting difficult issues for that very purpose.

  • British Spy Fiction and the End of Empire
British Spy Fiction and the End of Empire The position of spy fiction is largely synonymous in popular cul- ture with ideas of patriotism and national security, with the spy himself indicative of the defence of British interests and the pre- servation of British power around the globe. This book reveals a more complicated side to these assumptions than typically per- ceived, arguing that the representation of space and power within spy fiction is more complex than commonly assumed. Instead of the British spy tirelessly maintaining the integrity of Empire, this volume illustrates how spy fiction contains disunities and dis- junctions in its representation of space, and the relationship between the individual and the state in an era of declining British power. Focusing primarily on the work of Graham Greene, Ian Flem- ing, Len Deighton, and John le Carré, the volume brings a fresh methodological approach to the study of spy fiction and Cold War culture. It presents close textual analysis within a framework of spatial and sovereign theory as a means of examining the cultural impact of decolonization and the shifting geopolitics of the Cold 3/331 War. Adopting a thematic approach to the analysis of space in spy fiction, the text explores the reciprocal process by which con- textual history intersects with literature throughout the period in question, arguing that spy fiction is responsible for reflecting, strengthening and, in some cases, precipitating cultural anxieties over decolonization and the end of Empire. This study promises to be a welcome addition to the develop- ing field of spy fiction criticism and popular culture studies.
