How to Grow a Super Athlete
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/03/04/sports/playmagazine/04play-talent.html March 4, 2007 How to Grow a Super-Athlete By DANIEL COYLE This story could begin in many places — it's about beginnings, after all — but I'd like to start with the recent evening when my 4-year-old daughter, Zoe, appeared before me wielding a yellow baseball bat and an important announcement: batting tees were for babies. From now on, she would hit real pitches, like the big kids. By way of biography, I should mention that Zoe, the youngest of four, is considered one of the finest all-around mini-athletes in the history of our house. She's widely celebrated for her ability to throw balls really far, to hop on one foot across the whole front porch, and to run faster than a superfast airplane can fly. So as I walked (and she raced) down to the basement and located an inflatable purple ball, I fully expected Zoe to take to hitting like she'd taken to everything else. But Zoe, it turned out, pretty much stunk. Toss after toss, she missed. Five tosses. Then 10. I tried throwing the ball softer, harder, lower, higher. I got a different bat, offered advice and abundant encouragement, tried covertly to pitch the ball so it hit the bat. Nothing worked. Zoe whiffed with virtuosity and enthusiasm. Against my nobler instincts, I found myself, like the purple ball, getting a bit deflated. I felt as if I were receiving a grimly polite report suggesting that Zoe, despite her athletic promise, had regrettably tested negative for hand-eye coordination. -

Introduction to Russian Poetry - Michael Wachtel Excerpt More Information
Cambridge University Press 0521004934 - The Cambridge Introduction to Russian Poetry - Michael Wachtel Excerpt More information Introduction Поэ´т – издaлeкa´ зaво´дит рe´чь. Поэ´тa – дaлeко´ зaво´дит рe´чь. цвeтaeвa, «Поэ´ты» The poet brings language from afar. Language brings the poet far. Tsvetaeva, “Poets” When poets read their works aloud, we may not understand every word, but we immediately recognize that their intonation differs from that of everyday speech. This “unnatural” declamation often causes confusion among those who first encounter it. “Why don’t they just read it normally?” one is tempted to ask. The reason is simple: poets want to set their speech off from everyday language. Individual poets vary widely in the degree of “unnaturalness” they introduce to their readings, but in virtually all cases their goal is the same: to destabilize the familiar world of their listeners, to make them hear anew. All of us, poets or not, alter our tone of voice and choice of words in accordance with specific circumstances. We speak differently with our par- ents than with our peers, we address the auto mechanic differently than the policeman, we speak differently when giving a toast than we do when calling for an ambulance. In many life situations, what might be called the prosaic attitude toward language dominates. Our object is to relay information as quickly and unambiguously as possible. At other times, getting the point across is not enough; it is essential to do so convincingly and fervently. We select our words carefully and consciously organize them. In this case, we are not necessarily creating poetry, but it is fair to say that we are moving in the direction of poetry. -

Naperville Jaycees Announce *NSYNC's Lance Bass to Host the POP 2000 Tour at the Last Fling on Friday, August 31, 2018
For Immediate Release May 8, 2018 Contact: Alex Anderson 773-677-0769 [email protected] Naperville Jaycees Announce *NSYNC’s Lance Bass to Host the POP 2000 Tour at the Last Fling on Friday, August 31, 2018 The Naperville Jaycees is proud to announce *NSYNC’s Lance Bass will host a lineup of boybands for the POP 2000 Tour at the Last Fling on Friday, August 31, 2018. This family-friendly tour will feature O- Town, Aaron Carter, Ryan Cabrera and Tyler Hilton from One Tree Hill. Lance Bass is the quintessential illustration of a highly successful and driven jack-of-all-trades: singer, host, actor, producer, writer, entrepreneur, philanthropist and cosmonaut. He is the perfect host for the POP 2000 Tour, which will allow the Naperville Jaycees’ Last Fling audience to relive their boy- band memories from the early 2000’s. O-Town O-Town’s story began in 1999, when “Making the Band” (produced in conjunction with the creator of both the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC) chronicled the creation, development, and rise to success of O-Town throughout three seasons of the series. The group became the first to be signed by Clive Davis to his label, J Records, and released two full-length albums, which included #1 singles, “Liquid Dreams” and “All or Nothing.” The latter of which was nominated for Song of the Year at the Radio Music Awards in 2001. -

Kline maintains he just wants to enforce the law and protect children, but critics charge that he's attacking a woman's right to an abortion and putting more kids at risk. NOW examines Kline's policies, which have made Kansas ground-zero for the reproductive rights debate in America.
