An unknown, starving band named Thin Lizzy (which consisted of Bell, Downey & Lynott) were offered a lump sum of money to record some Deep Purple songs. (The album contains also a few non-DP tracks.) They did - with the help from two Irish guys. The album came out in early 1973. It wasn't a success. In February, Thin Lizzy had a top ten hit with a single of their own. Read more about it here. • Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012
Jon Lord June 9 1941 – July 16 2012 Founder member of Deep Purple, Jon Lord was born in Leicester. He began playing piano aged 6, studying classical music until leaving school at 17 to become a Solicitor’s clerk. Initially leaning towards the theatre, Jon moved to London in 1960 and trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama, winning a scholarship, and paying for food and lodgings by performing in pubs. In 1963 he broke away from the school with a group of teachers and other students to form the pioneering London Drama Centre. A year later, Jon “found himself“ in an R and B band called The Artwoods (fronted by Ronnie Wood’s brother, Art) where he remained until the summer of 1967. During this period, Jon became a much sought after session musician recording with the likes of Elton John, John Mayall, David Bowie, Jeff Beck and The Kinks (eg 'You Really Got Me'). In December 1967, Jon met guitarist Richie Blackmore and by early 1968 the pair had formed Deep Purple. The band would pioneer hard rock and go on to sell more than 100 million albums, play live to more than 10 million people, and were recognized in 1972 by The Guinness Book of World Records as “the loudest group in the world”. Deep Purple’s debut LP “Shades of Deep Purple” (1968) generated the American Top 5 smash hit “Hush”. In 1969, singer Ian Gillan and bassist Roger Glover joined and the band’s sound became heaver and more aggressive on “Deep Purple in Rock” (1970), where Jon developed a groundbreaking new way of amplifying the sound of the Hammond organ to match the distinctive sound of the electric guitar.

"Whoosh! " ist der Nachfolger der weltweiten Chart-Erfolge "inFinite " (2017) und " NOW What?! " (2013). "Putting the Deep back into Purple " wurde im Studio schnell zum inoffiziellen Motto. Bereits mit den ersten Songs war klar: Deep Purple und Bob Ezrin waren auf dem Weg ein neues Album zu schaffen, das die Grenzen der Zeit überschreitet, während sie sich mit ihrem Unmut über die aktuelle Situation der Welt an alle Generationen richten.

Kieler Beiträge zur Filmmusikforschung, 5.3, 2010 // 407 COME HELL OR HIGH WATER Großbritannien 1994 R: Hugh Symonds. P: Heinz Henn, Lana Topham. K: David Amphlett. S: Niven Howie. T: Chris McDermott. Beteiligte Bands: Deep Purple. DVD-/Video-Vertrieb: BMG Video. Video-Auslieferung: Oktober 1994 (Großbritannien). DVD-Auslieferung: 29.05.2001 (Großbritannien). 124min, 1,33:1, Farbe, Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo/Dolby Digital 5.1.

Following on from the success of his solo album ‘Gillans Inn,’ the rock community is gearing up for the series of 8, one-night only concerts along the eastern seaboard of Australia. You may never get to see Ian Gillan perform in such an intimate environment again. Gillan, greatly renowned as a member of Deep Purple in their most popular era of the early 70’s has had a hugely successful career, spanning five decades. Gillan led his own band during the late Seventies before rejoining Deep Purple for ‘Perfect Strangers’ in 1984. In 1989 he toured as Garth Rockett before releasing further solo albums including ‘Naked Thunder’ (1990), ‘Toolbox’ (1991), Dreamcatcher (1998) and most recently ‘Gillans Inn’ (2006) to name a few.

  • Deep Purple – Now What!
Deep Purple – Now What! Deep Purple have never really been a favourite band of mine if I’m honest. I used to find their music ok when I was younger but the Concerto for Rock Band and Orchestra has always held my attention; not because it’s a great piece of music, but to me, it was a really interesting experiment trying to gel two completely different genres together. In fact, opposites really. First of all, the problem of ‘dynamic’ differences is quite large but also the massive differences in attitude, style and basic sound. They just don’t fit together that well if each needs to retain its identity. Too often, an orchestra ends up playing a pseudo intelligent backing for a band in order to give it more ‘respect’ or the band tries to play in a ‘classical’ kind of way which really stilts them. The two don’t sit together well in my opinion. Deep Purple’s concerto retains each genres’ identities and even makes use of the massive contrasts available. Jon Lord’s last recording of it merges the two well although the original big ‘rock’ feel is somewhat compromised and the piece has been mixed into a more palatable mix with compromises made from both sides in order to get it to hold together perhaps better as a composition. Real old Deep Purple never really did it for me. ‘Child in Time’ was good but once heard, I found that I didn’t particularly want to revisit it. Same for a lot of their other stuff for me.

  • Bolero Rhythm in Rock
Proceedings of the International Conference on Music Semiotics In memory of Raymond Monelle University of Edinburgh, 26-28 October 2012, UK Edited by: Nearchos Panos Vangelis Lympouridis George Athanasopoulos Peter Nelson Published by: IPMDS – International Project on Music and Dance Semiotics Alison House 12 Nicolson Square Edinburgh, Midlothian EH8 9DF JH3 Copyright 2013 © Produced and Distributed by: ECA - The University of Edinburgh and IPMDS ISBN: 978-0-9576548-0-8 449 The Bolero Rhythm in Rock Mark Yeary, Indiana University, Bloomington, IN, USA ABSTRACT The Bolero rhythm, a triplet-infused rhythm pattern derived from Maurice Ravel’s “Boléro”, appears in a number of rock music singles beginning in the late 1960’s. Although Ravel’s highly recognizable pattern is commonly quoted in many genres of popular music, the Bolero rhythm takes on added significance in the realm of hard rock: it acts as a symbolic musical topic that represents military fanfare. In this paper, I provide a brief history of the Bolero rhythm topic as it appears in rock recordings, and I explore the features that characterize this topic—triplet patterns, a featured snare drum, and a unison “riff”—as it is frequently heard in a rock context. INTRODUCTION In the genre of early 1970’s music that we now call hard rock, three bands fought for supremacy: Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, and Deep Purple. Although Deep Purple’s legacy has softened over time, their star burned brightly in 1970; the group that had offered the pretentious Concerto for Group and Orchestra just a year earlier met the new decade with a more focused, no-nonsense approach, as heard in their album Deep Purple In Rock.

Particular attention is paid to an overview of the chronology of recording sessions for a number of selected bands from the BBC’s archival collection (1962–1972). The role of John Peel in the creation of creative music programs within the framework of “Radio 1” was noted. The study showed that the digitalization of archival space has brought new opportunities for finding lost rarities that were at the origins of rock music. Both positive and negative trends in the restoration and use of archived musical phonograms from radio storages are noted.
