FROM BLOOD LIBEL TO BOYCOTT CHANGING FACES OF BRITISH ANTISEMITISM Robert Wistrich he self-congratulatory and somewhat sanitized story of Anglo-Jewry since the mid- T 17th century “return” of the Jews to Britain traditionally depicted this history as a triumphal passage from servitude to freedom or from darkness to light. Great Britain— mother of parliaments, land of religious and civic toleration, cradle of the Industrial Revolution, and possessor of a great overseas empire had graciously extended its liberties to the Jewish community which had every reason to love Britain precisely because it was British. So if things had always been so good, how could they became so bad? Why are there so many dark clouds building up on the horizon? Why is Anglo-Jewry the only important ethnic or religious minority in contemporary Britain that has to provide a permanent system of guards and surveillance for its communal institutions, schools, synagogues, and cultural centers? Antisemitism in the British Isles is certainly not a new phenomenon. It has a long history which should surprise only those who naively think of the English as being a uniquely tolerant, fair-minded, and freedom-loving nation. There were periods like the 12th century, as the historian Anthony Julius recently noted, when Anglo-Jews were being injured or murdered without pity or conscience—at times in an atmosphere of public revelry. Over 150 people were killed in March 1190 during the massacre of the Jews of York. This nasty wave of violent persecution (which included the first anti-Jewish blood libel in Christian Europe) culminated in the unceremonious expulsion of Jewry in 1290. -

NT Associates and Peter Hall Bursary Recipients
Thursday 15 October NATIONAL THEATRE ANNOUNCES NEW ASSOCIATES AND PETER HALL BURSARY RECIPIENTS The National Theatre announced today that Rufus Norris, NT Director and Joint Chief Executive, has invited Ola Animashawun and Clint Dyer to join as Associates of the National Theatre. In addition, The Peter Hall Bursary has been expanded to support three new artists. The directors who have been invited to receive this fund are Ned Bennett, Ola Ince and Nancy Medina and they will be supported by the NT for the next two years. Ola Animashawun, was previously the founder and Head of the Royal Court Young Writers Programme, where he was also an Associate. Ola will work at Associate level in both Learning and the New Work Department at the NT, as well as continuing in his role as Connections Dramaturg which he has held since 2018. In this new position he will work cross organisationally towards racial equity and increased representation both in the work presented on stage and at all levels in the NT’s workforce. Ola is joined by Clint Dyer who becomes an NT Associate following playing ‘Cutler’ in the NTs Olivier winning production of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, the success of Death of England and the programming of Death of England: Delroy, which will open in the Olivier theatre later this month. In this role Clint will work closely with Rufus Norris and the Senior Artistic team and together with the Associates will advise on programming decisions. He will also continue to act and write and direct his own work. -

Before joining A.C.T., Perloff was artistic director of Classic Stage Company (CSC) in New York. She is a recipient of France’s Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres and the National Corporate Theatre Fund’s 2007 Artistic Achievement Award. Perloff received a B.A. Phi Beta Kappa in classics and comparative literature from Stanford University and was a Fulbright fellow at the University of Oxford. She has taught at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and in the Master of Fine Arts Program in Acting at A.C.T., in addition to authoring numerous plays. This is Perloff’s second encounter with Sophocles’ Elektra, having directed the world premiere of Ezra Pound’s version of the play at CSC in 1988. Clint Dyer Appointed Deputy Artistic Director
TUESDAY 26 JANUARY RUFUS NORRIS APPOINTS CLINT DYER AS DEPUTY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR OF THE NATIONAL THEATRE The National Theatre has announced today that Clint Dyer has been appointed Deputy Artistic Director. He will work closely with Rufus Norris, Director and Joint Chief Executive, and Emily McLaughlin, Director of New Work to support and shape the NT’s creative output. Over the course of his award-winning career Clint has worked across theatre, film and TV as an actor, writer and director. He was a longstanding board member and an Associate Artist at Theatre Royal Stratford East, where he acted in and directed work. At the Royal Court Theatre, Clint has worked frequently as an actor, director and writer he has also acted, written and directed for Complicité. His work at the National Theatre includes the role of Cutler in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom in 2016 and co-writer and director of Death of England and Death of England: Delroy which played in the Dorfman and Olivier theatres last year. He was appointed as an NT Associate last year. Clint is one of only a very small number of people, and the only Black British artist, to have worked at the NT as an actor, writer and director on full-scale productions. His breadth of experience and creative work will be invaluable as the organisation adapts following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic and focuses on the future. Clint will continue to act, write and direct his own work away from the NT. His next project will be directing Get Up, Stand Up! The Bob Marley Musical which opens at the Lyric Theatre in the West End this year. -

The study discusses excessively ambitious women who question patriarchal order and subvert gender roles to get power and finally left alone on the top like Thatcher. Marlene in Caryl Churchill’s play Top Girls, Marion in Churchill’s play Owners, Mary Traverse in Timberlake Wertenbaker’s play The Grace of Mary Traverse are discussed throughly. Marlene, Marion, and Mary are the representatives of the destructive effects of the ambition for power that characterize Thatcher’s Britain. Socialist/materialist feminism is applied to the plays both to criticize selfish Thatcherite powerful women figures and to express the lack of collaboration among women to improve their position.
