Grant Amount: $ 20,000.00 Project Dates: March 1, 2016 – February 28, 2017 Implementation Partners for this Project (please explain the level of involvement for each partner): • Sheka zone Bureau of Forest and Environment unit: as a key stakeholder in the area of environmental conservation; • Sheka zone Bureau of Labor and Social Affairs: the bureau has a stake regarding employment, and socio-economic activities; • Sheka zone Investment unit: the bureau is key stakeholder as it serves as the private sector’s unified voice. • Private organizations operating in the area: there are nearly forty five big and small scale tea and coffee development plantations. SNNPR Southern Nations Nationalities and Peoples Demography and Health Aynalem Adugna, July 2014 www.EthioDemographyAndHealth.Org 2 SNNPR is one of the largest regions in Ethiopia, accounting for more than 10 percent of the country’s land area [1]. The mid-2008 population is estimated at nearly 16,000,000; almost a fifth of the country’s population. With less than one in tenth of its population (8.9%) living in urban areas in 2008 the region is overwhelmingly rural. "The region is divided into 13 administrative zones, 133 Woredas and 3512 Kebeles, and its capital is Awassa." [1] "The SNNPR is an extremely ethnically diverse region of Ethiopia, inhabited by more than 80 ethnic groups, of which over 45 (or 56 percent) are indigenous to the region (CSA 1996). These ethnic groups are distinguished by different languages, cultures, and socioeconomic organizations. Although none of the indigenous ethnic groups dominates the ethnic makeup of the national population, there is a considerable ethnic imbalance within the region. The largest ethnic groups in the SNNPR are the Sidama (17.6 percent), Wolayta (11.7 percent), Gurage (8.8 percent), Hadiya (8.4 percent), Selite (7.1 percent), Gamo (6.7 percent), Keffa (5.3 percent), Gedeo (4.4 percent), and Kembata (4.3 percent) …. While the Sidama are the largest ethnic group in the region, each ethnic group is numerically dominant in its respective administrative zone, and there are large minority ethnic groups in each zone. The languages spoken in the SNNPR can be classified into four linguistic families: Cushitic, Nilotic, Omotic, and Semitic. -

Species composition, Plant Community structure and Natural regeneration status of Belete Moist Evergreen Montane Forest, Oromia Regional state, Southwestern Ethiopia Kflay Gebrehiwot1* and Kitessa Hundera2 1Department of Biology, Samara University, P.O.Box 132, Ethiopia (*[email protected]) 2Department of Biology, Jimma University, P.O.Box 378, Ethiopia ABSTRACT Belete forest is one of the very few remnant moist evergreen montane forests in Ethiopia. The objective of this work was to study the vegetation structure, composition and Natural regeneration status of Belete moist evergreen montane forest. To investigate the plant community structure, composition and regeneration status of Belete forest, line transects were laid down on the longest transect starting from the bottom valley to the top ridge. Sample quadrats 20m x20 m, 5m x 5m, 1m x 1m were laid for trees, shrubs, sapling and seedling, and herbaceous layer respectively in a nested form. The sample quadrats were laid down along transects at a distance of 50m from each other. A total of 69 quadrats were sampled. Vegetation classification was performed using PC - ORD for windows version 5.0. Five communities were recognized. Results showed that a total of 157 plant species representing 69 families and 135 genera were recorded. These were composed of 31.2% Herbs, 28.7% Trees, 26.1% Shrubs, 5.7% Climbers, 5.1% Liana, 1.9% Epiphytic herbs, and 1.3% herbaceous Ferns. The major families were Fabaceae and Asteraceae each represented by 10 species (6.4%), followed by Lamiaceae 9 (5.7%) and Rubiaceae 6 (3.8%). Other thirty three families consisting 19.8% were represented by one species only. -

The geographic location of the project is in Yeki, Anderacha and Masha woredas of Sheka Zone, Southern Nation Nationalities and People’s Regional State (SNNPRS), Ethiopia. Strategic Direction: The project specifically addresses the Strategic Direction 1 (one) which is stated as “Mainstreaming biodiversity into wider development policies, plans, and projects to deliver the co- benefits of biodiversity conservation, improved local livelihoods and economic development in priority corridors” Grant Amount: USD 13,612.16 Project Dates: Originally, the project period was for six months starting 1st of February, 2017 and ending on the 31st of July, 2017. However, it was extended until October 10, 2017. Implementation Partners for this Project (please explain the level of involvement for each partner): Three main partners were involved in the implementation of the project: 1. God for People Relief and Development Organization (GPRDO): as implementing partner facilitated the collection of photographic pictures and movies from the field for the production of communication materials. THE MAFINGA MOUNTAINS, ZAMBIA: Report of a reconnaissance trip, March 2018 October 2018 Jonathan Timberlake, Paul Smith, Lari Merrett, Mike Merrett, William Van Niekirk, Mpande Sichamba, Gift Mwandila & Kaj Vollesen Occasional Publications in Biodiversity No. 24 Mafinga Mountains, Zambia: a preliminary account, page 2 of 41 SUMMARY A brief trip was made in May 2018 to the high-altitude grasslands (2000–2300 m) on the Zambian side of the Mafinga Mountains in NE Zambia. The major objective was to look at plants, although other taxonomic groups were also investigated. This report gives an outline of the area's physical features and previous work done there, especially on vegetation, as well as an account of our findings. It was done at the request of and with support from the Wildlife and Environmental Conservation Society of Zambia under a grant from the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund. Over 200 plant collections were made representing over 100 species. Based on these collections, along with earlier, unconfirmed records from Fanshawe's 1973 vegetation study, a preliminary checklist of 430 taxa is given. Species of particular interest are highlighted, including four known endemic species and five near-endemics that are shared with the Nyika Plateau in Malawi. There were eight new Zambian records. Based on earlier studies a bird checklist is presented, followed by a brief discussion on mammals and herps. More detailed accounts are given on Orthoptera and some other arthropod groups. A discussion on the ecology and range of habitats is presented, with particular focus on the quartzite areas that are rather similar to those on the Chimanimani Mountains in Zimbabwe/ Mozambique. -

Journal of Geography & Natural Disasters Research The contribution of GUDO forest conservation culture is key to biodiversity conservation Getaneh Haile Shoddo Department of Natural Resource Management, Jigjiga University,Ethopia. ABSTRACT Background: The Sheka people have long been sustainably managing and conserving the Sheka forest by utilizing different procedures. Shockingly, these indigenous methods for natural resource management are ordinarily absent from scientific forest management and not archived. This paper aims to document “the GUDO culture” and demonstrate how the Sheka people through their indigenous culture can provide valuable, appropriate, and effective forest conservation strategies. Thus, every culture has a system of beliefs that guides their interactions with nature. One of the traditional forest management practice commonly found in Sheka zone is the GUDO. Results: The GUDO is a designated forest area mostly found in the mountainous and the rocky area of the Sheka zone. It is found mostly in rocky and mountainous parts of the Sheka zone. They are cultural symbols related to indigenous beliefs and signify spiritual connections to the forestland. Conclusions: This paper concludes that the GUDO forest conservation culture is illustrated in the Sheka people forest utilization, protection, and management. Therefore, the GUDO forest conservation culture provides important insights into the protection of various forest types and tree species, contributing to the conservation of biodiversity.
