Zain Retherford Interview-Apr. 1, 2020, 3X NCAA Champion and 2X Hodge Trophy winner.

Q: The Olympics are postponed. Any thoughts on how it affects you? A: I think few would argue that postponement of the Olympic Games is necessary during these uncertain times that we're having. We put our whole careers into training for this one event, but for me it's all about perspective. My wrestling goals are immensely important to me, but they are not above putting the health of myself and others at risk. I am happy that the Olympics were postponed. It has forced me to modify my training and reflect on the big picture. We are all in this together.

Q: What's the best advice you've ever received? A: My parents taught me to value effort over winning and losing. No matter what is in front of you, you can always give your best. That's a lesson I will pass on to my children someday.

Riley Lefever Interview-Apr. 6, 2020, 4X NCAA Divsion III National Champion and 2X Outstanding Wrestler.

Q: What do you think makes the NLWC special? Olympic RTC practices, Resident Athlete Programs, coaches, training partners, supporters, etc.? A: I think everyone involved with the NLWC is what makes it so special. It starts from the top, with the donors who make it possible, and then the leadership from the coaches and those who run the behind the scenes (outside of practice). Like any business or program, the truly successful do things the right way and everyone involved in the NLWC has that sort of character. Our coaches are the best in the world, our facilities are amazing, and we have a room with some of the most decorated and talented wrestlers in the world. But most importantly, to a training athlete, everyone who is in the room wants to be the best they can be, and that's what really counts in our daily training.

Q: What's the best advice you've ever received? A: From my high school coach, "if you want to impress me, win those close matches you aren't supposed to win."

Anthony Cassar Interview-Apr. 13, 2020, NCAA Champion at Penn State and the newest member of the NLWC's Resident Athlete Program

Q: Having started in January, you are the most recent wrestler to join the NLWC Resident Athlete Program. What is your initial impression and what do you think makes the NLWC unique? Olympic RTC practices, coaches, training partners, supporters, etc.? A: I think what makes the NLWC unique is that it is made up of individuals with exceptional character. I can't speak for other clubs, but everyone I know that is connected with the NLWC are just good people who have the humility and willingness necessary for constant improvement. This starts with our amazing donors and is carried out through our staff, coaches and athletes. When you combine that with a deep and pure love for the sport of wrestling, you get a program with unlimited potential.

Q: You participated in RTC practices when you were a wrestler at Penn State. What are your thoughts on the benefits of RTC's from a college competitor's perspective? A: Because of my injuries, financial difficulty and love for , I've trained with the RTC more than I've trained with the collegiate team over the course of my time at Penn State and I don't think I would be where I am at today without that option. The NLWC is so beneficial for a college competitor because it not only gives them another opportunity to train but also gives them an idea of what it takes to be the best in the world at something. I've obviously learned so much about wrestling by training with the club guys on a daily basis but even more about their mindset, lifestyles, and minor details that separate them from other athletes. Having the two groups coincide and help each other get better is such an awesome situation and I think it's something that should and will become more common in the future.

Q. Dodgeball is occasionally played as a warm-up for RTC practices. What's the secret to being a winning dodgeball player...need a cannon for an arm, cat-like reflexes, be offensive or defensive, hide in a corner, etc.? Please explain. A: There are many styles that seem to work, but it really comes down to two people that compliment each other well. A great example of this is Bo and I. Bo is an attacker, he has a strong throw and intimidates players with his aggressive style. As for me, I am calm, cool and collected out there. I always have my hair done and keep a big smile on my face to appear less of a threat. Then when the time comes to step up when either my partner gets hit or were getting late in the game, I arise from the shadows and secure the win.

Franklin Gomez Interview-April 21, 2020, NCAA Champion at Mich. State, World Silver Medalist, and the longest-tenured member of the R.A. Program

Q. You are the wrestler who has been with the NLWC Resident Athlete Program the longest, having started with the Club after winning an NCAA title for Michigan State in 2009. In many ways, your success in competition, your commitment in training, and your lifestyle off of the mat have provided the foundation for the Club's Resident Athlete Program to develop and grow over the past decade. From your perspective, how has the NLWC Program changed from when you first joined the Club to how it is today? A: When I joined the club, if I remember correctly, there were also three more full-time wrestlers. Now, we have a full army of world-class wrestlers hungry to improve. This has been possible thanks to all the work happening behind the scene and our sponsors and donors that have been with us since the beginning. Furthermore, the way we train has been evolving little by little because we are integrating sport science to improve training, recovery, and performance. The emphasis on the diet, different ways to recover, and adding various workouts of low impact bike exercise has helped our training tremendously.

Q: What advice would you give the newest members of the NLWC Resident Athlete Program who are just starting their international careers? A: My advice to the newest members of the NLWC is to be grateful for this once in a lifetime opportunity. I would encourage them to display their gratitude not only in the wrestling room but in their lifestyle. The NLWC is very special not only because of its elite wrestlers but because of many who have added their grain of salt to the club.

Q: In the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, you were at the top of your game and wrestling well, quite possibly on your way to an Olympic medal. And then you lost a very, very controversial decision to the extent that the three officials for that match were I believe suspended and then eventually officially expelled by . Tough and controversial losses are a part of all sports, including wrestling. However, they can be absolutely heartbreaking for athletes, coaches, and family members who have made a lifetime's commitment. How did you get over that match and do you have any advice for others who have gone through similar setbacks?

3 A: After going through the devastating outcome, one of the thoughts that came to my mind was a story about a man named Joseph in the Bible. He went through different hardships in the course of his life. Long story short, his hardships indirectly taught him to bless others. Therefore, I was encouraged by that story and I prayed that something good would come from this eventually even if I don't see it right away. Having a healthy definition of what success means added much more value to my life during that time because I knew I was more than a wrestler, more than winning or losing. My advice to others is to exam your definition of success or the foundation you are building your success on because when tough times comes, only the houses built on good foundation usually weather the storms of life.

Kyle Snyder Interview-April 27, 2020, 3x NCAA Champion and World and Olympic Gold Medalist.

Q: In many ways, these are unusual and tough times...for wrestlers focused on winning Olympic Gold Medals as well as for those people facing lost jobs or income, sickness, etc. When I think of wrestlers who have a positive outlook and are quite capable of handling any adversity that comes their way, you're at the top of the list. Could you provide some insight on your approach? A: My faith is what allows me to navigate situations in a positive way. I always remind myself of two facts. The first is that God is love. The second is that God is in control. With this in my mind, I know that everything that happens to me is for my benefit and it is to mature my faith in Christ. I don't believe in chance. I believe that God has a very specific plan and He has been executing it perfectly since the beginning of creation. I believe everything that happens to His children is for their good. I read different stories in the Bible of the apostles being thrown and jail and beaten, yet they say they can continually rejoice because they know God is growing them in all these situations. If something isn't going the way that I want it too, then I know it is going the way God wants it too and I would rather His will be done.

Q: When you won a Gold Medal in 2016, you became the youngest Olympic Gold Medalist in American wrestling history. When you were on top of the podium and the National Anthem was playing, what was going through your mind at that moment? A: Every time I'm on the podium I thank God for everything that happened throughout the day. I thanked Him for being with me during the tournament and I thanked Him for everyone He put in my life that helped me get to that point. I also remember thinking about my older brother who wasn't able to be at the Olympics because he serves in the army. I have always looked up to him and know he played a huge role in the way that I compete.

Q: I know you're training for wrestling while in quarantine. Are you also spending some extra time developing your dodgeball skills? A: Rest and recovery is as important as the training. I've been resting my shoulder. Spending some time to do some extra upper body mobility. Working on throwing with my off hand. I've also been staying in contact with most of the top players. Those alliances need to be strong when we return.

THE NLWC SERVES THE WRESTLING COMMUNITY WITH SCHOLASTIC PROGRAMS Although the NLWC focuses on the Olympic development of top collegiate and senior level wrestlers, the Club also continues to serve the wrestling community by offering several different youth and scholastic programs. The Breakfast Club took place on Sunday mornings from Jan. 5 to Feb. 9, 2020 in the Penn State Wrestling room. Former Penn State Coach John Fritz and several Central PA High School Coaches including Ryan Cummins, Pat Flynn, Tim Haas, Brad Pataky, and Biff Walizer ran the Breakfast Club Practices.

The goal of the Breakfast Club practices was to provide a hard workout for advanced elementary, junior high, and senior high wrestlers. Although there was drilling and some conditioning, there was very little technique covered in these practices. The emphasis was on a lot of live wrestling, including technique situations, match situations, both short and long duration goes in certain positions, round robins, and live matches. It was an intense and positive atmosphere where dedicated and hard-working workout partners made each other better. Congratulations to the many Breakfast Club participants who had very successful seasons!

The Nittany Lion Wrestling Club hosted two different clinics in the Penn State Wrestling room on February 29, 2020. Over 300 young wrestlers participated in the clinics which were directed by Olympic Regional Training Center Coach, Eric Thompson. The young wrestlers who attended the clinics learned techniques and also had the opportunity to meet, take pictures, and get autographs from their “wrestling” heroes.

STATE COLLEGE TOURNAMENT

On the day following the Clinics of Champions, the NLWC hosted the annual State College Tournament on March 1, 2020. The NLWC would like to thank Decker Tape Products, Inc. for again sponsoring the tournament. Jack Decker and his family have been long-time supporters of the Club, and their Mat Tape (www.wrestlingmattape.com) is put to good use with 16 mats being used for the tournament.

Weigh-ins were held on Saturday, February 29, at the State College Area High School, and wrestling took place in Penn State’s Rec Hall the next day. Over 1,000 elementary and junior high wrestlers competed at the tournament which is well known as a very competitive age level event. Wrestlers attended from the following states and from one Canadian province: Colorado, Delaware, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, , North Carolina, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and West Virginia.

The tournament ran very well under the direction of RTC Coach Eric Thompson and a legion of volunteers. The many young wrestlers were excited to wrestle in Rec Hall, the home of the National Champion Penn State Wrestling team.

The NLWC would like to thank the many, many volunteers who again contributed so much of their time to make the tournament a success! It would not be possible to run a tournament of this size without your help. THANK YOU!
