Just For The Handicapped

It’s no secret that the parking situation around the AUC is in desperate need of improvement. However, even though there is little space to drive and even less to park, parking in a handicapped space is inexcusable. Okay, okay, so you are running late for class, the light at the comer of Fair St. and James P. Brawley is out, it is raining and the parking lot is full. What do you do? You’re only going to be here for an hour, it’s okay, right? Wrong!! Handicapped parking spaces are carefully positioned near ramps and wide entrances and exits. When handicapped citizens are forced to park elsewhere they often find themselves faced with mountains of stairs, uneven pavement and narrow walkways. NFL Names Black Coach By PIERCE W. HUFF Sports Editor Hail to the ol’ black and silver! Hail to the football team whose owner says: “Just win, baby!” Hail to Al Davis and the Los Angeles Raiders, the football team that finally had enough guts to hire a black head coach. On Tuesday, Oct. 3, Al Davis, managing partner of the L. A. Raiders, decided that he had seen enough. The Raiders, currently 1—3, had just come off of a disappointing 24—20 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in the Los Angeles Coliseum, a game in which they were once leading 17—7. It was after this game that Davis decided to make former Raider AllPro offensive tackle Art Shell head coach. However, according to most insiders this was not the game that marked the firing of former head coach Mike Shanahan. Most insiders point to last year’s 43—37 loss to the Seahawks in the Coliseum in the last game of the season, a loss which cost the Raiders a chance at the American Football Conference Western Division title and the playoffs, as a turning point in the Davis-Shanahan relationship. What the Raiders have done m the hiring of Art Shell is threefold. They have broken the color barrier in the National Football League. It took a maverick owner like Al Davis to show the owners in the rest of the NFL that there are plenty of black coaches capable of coaching in the NFL, and that the bottom line is winning and not racism. They have hired a head coach that believes in the Raiders and the things that made the Raiders great, like the long bomb and physical intimidation which were longtime Raider trademarks. In hiring Art Shell, Al Davis has attained a head coach that ..4 believes in long 50 yard passes and not short 10 yard dinks, in strong hitting and not wimpy arm tackling. In hiring Art Shell, This run by the Panthers helped, but not enough as Morris Brown won the season opener 49—7. Al Davis has said no to the Raider football of the future, and yes to the Raider football of the past. They have hired a head coach who knows that a big, strong offensive line can do miracles for not only the offense, but the Spencer Ends Drought defense as well. Art Shell during his tenure with the Raiders played alongside such great offensive linemen as Gene Upshaw, Dave Dalby, and the legendary Jim Otto, so he knows through By ANTHONY GEORGE III Expect us to play tough every combination of reasons: for experience what great offensive line play is all about and that Staff Writer game, and we should win, example, prestige.
