The entity to receive funding for this project is the Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation a (501(c)3), located at 4300 Lyons Avenue, Suite 300, Houston, TX 77339. Fifth Ward Community Redevelopment Corporation and Pleasant Hill Ministries along with partners from Harris County District Attorney’s Office and Juvenile Probation created the Center for Urban Transformation (CUT). In August 2019 under the financial oversight and administration of Fifth Ward Community Development Corporation (FWCRC), FWCRC+CUT launched its first critically needed community program: Juvenile Justice Diversion, which has assisted on average 100 children each year. The funding if awarded will allow expansion of the program would support the provision of services outside of Fifth Ward to serve other at-risk youth. In March 2011 I physically moved into my current office as Vice President for Community Relations & Institutional Access. At no time in any of these positions have I been involved, directly or indirectly, in securing Congressional earmarks for the University of Houston, nor have my duties and responsibilities in any way involved securing Congressional earmarks.

TMO Call to Action on Rental Assistance
The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) Call to Action Tell Senators Cornyn and Cruz and members of Congress to support Rent Assistance in the next stimulus bill This week the US Congress is deciding what will be funded in a stimulus bill that will be more than $1 Trillion. The House passed the $3 Trillion HEROES Act two months ago (HR 6800) which set aside $100 Billion for Rent Assistance and $75 Billion for Mortgage Relief. The Senate is proposing a much smaller stimulus bill and they currently do not plan any rent assistance. Here are some reasons why TMO supports rent assistance: • Its immoral and unhealthy to force families into homelessness during a global pandemic. • More than half of Houston families are renters. • In a recent survey, over 40% of Texas renters were unsure they could pay August rent. • Each day hundreds of area families are being evicted or self-evicting and doubling up in apartments of family and friends—one reason why there is so much community spread of COVID in neighborhoods with many apartment complexes. • The CARES Act has had a moratorium on evictions/foreclosures on rental properties with mortgages guaranteed by the federal government, but that moratorium ends July 25. The funding will be used to construct and maintain a sustainable growing environment at the Booker T. Washington High School founded in 1893 and is currently, located at 4204 Yale St, Houston, TX 77018. The project will provide a living laboratory food education center as well as a production facility. The grounds will feature raised beds gardens for food production. The raised beds gardens will act as a carbon sink to absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in soil and plants. A wind farm will be installed that can supply electrical energy to the entire project and the football field.

Dr. Player will be a visiting professor in cell biology during the summer 2017 semester. She is the recipient of one of five visiting professorships awarded by the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB) Minorities Affairs Committee (MAC). Dr. Murray and Dr. Player will engage in research to understand the type and role of connexin gap junction channel proteins in the regulation of cell behavior.
