This is the one Stone Roses book fans will want to read. Feb 03, Bob Schnell rated it really liked it Shelves: read-in , music-biographies. Decent read for a fan, might be a bit hard reading for a non fan. In his footnotes, however, Spence mentions that Reni took a strong interest throughout and that band participation was only scotched because of the forthcoming reunion. They didn't follow trends, sign to trendy labels when they easily could have, or go along with the rest of the indie crowd i Pretty average as far as band biographies go. On the flip side, the band might still argue that they wouldn't have had a career at all which is why they didn't care if they got ripped off. Why should their biography be any different? The Bulletin radio. The Roses famously never broke America, partly by design, partly by default. Books for People with Print Disabilities. Books will be free of page markings. Be the first one to write a review. We explore the roots of the band and each character tows together to form the inseparable four piece that went on to illuminate British pop and rock. Refresh and try again. OK More information. This would have been a much better book if the band themselves were not so reticent about giving interviews. And even someone like me - not the biggest admirer of the Roses bar Fools Gold and Waterfall - can see that he's got compelling subject matter. Best Selling in Nonfiction See all. The story of The Stone Roses is basically that they were I usually know a lot more about a band before I read the biography, but before I read this one I could only name one member of the band and knew next to nothing about their story. Martin Luther King Jr. The view from the American industry is particularly illuminating. Incredibly, given the competition, history would judge Evans as the most astonishing band manager of the lot. It is very well written, with the details and informations you wouldn't find. The same hubris that helped them make some of the best music of the time also led them down an all too familiar path in the music world. It's less than 24 hours until my biggest gig in my life. The deal never happened. It is a fascinating story of a band who created a mystique which lasted for years based pretty much on one album. As a fan of the whole period I still enjoyed reading this because I was interested in some of the record company politics. Its chiming guitar riffs, anthemic melodies, and Smiths-like pop The Stone Roses captures the magic—and chaos—behind the UK band's rise, fall, and recent resurrection. They didn't read the small print; factionalisation got in the way of an equal split. This book is not yet featured on Listopia. They didn't follow trends, sign to trendy labels when they easily could have, or go along with the rest of the indie crowd in Manchester or the UK, even though their style ended up defining much of the era and they influenced many bands in the 90s who rose to super stardom notably Oasis. There are no reviews yet. The Stone Roses : War and Peace Writer But theirs is a story of unfulfilled success: their star imploded as their sophomore effort took years to complete and the band broke up acrimoniously in Until now. The early line ups, the music, the gigs, bad deals, fall outs, walk outs, court cases and the recent come back shows are all here. I found it interesting, as it squashed a few rumors I had heard over the years of drugs, their connection to oasis and so on. You can also choose to be emailed when someone replies to your comment. Their Spike Island concert in was considered the pinnacle of their career though it was nearly their Altamont. Options as a Strategic Investment by Lawrence G. Just as the Stone Roses themselves got bogged down in the tedium of the music business, so does the book. From gestation to resurrection, the tale of The Stone Roses in all it's glory and ignominy. I followed them around when I was 16 and 17, it's amazing. Lovely, that. The book ends with an account of their reunion concerts which I admit had entirely passed me by! Even the band members themselves, over time, seemed to disagree. Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later? The defining image was of Brown on stage holding a large inflatable world globe, which had bounced its way across the raised hands of the crowd towards the stage, fate providing the perfect symbol. Fascinating insight into the Stone Roses but the nerdy, over-detailed style meant it took me an age to get into this. Oct 12, Tadhg Maccarthy rated it really liked it Shelves: leisure. Forgotten your password? Well worth a read if you have any interest in the Roses and goes well with other books about the same time period. Consequently, this is probably not the definitive biography of the band. Za Europu i svijet rok dostave je 14 dana. I am sat here bursting with excitement. On the lookout for your next book to read, but not sure where to start? This band is different. Definitely a 'must-read' for big fans of the band. The reunion is an interesting and somewhat shocking post script, but in the end they squandered their undefinable and remarkable chemistry, leaving us with one classic, era defining album. As stated in the book 'It takes a lot of effort to look like there is no effort. Supposedly their tour manager is working on his own book which is why he did not contribute any interviews to this volume. Instead, Spence is fascinated by the provincial lads who were ignored by the city's Factory clique or dismissed as "goths", lads into skinhead bands and scooters, with unlikely musical influences brilliant guitarist John Squire wasn't inspired by Hendrix or Page, but by Bob "Derwood" Andrews of glam-punks Generation X. I was lucky enough to catch them at Finsbury Park in London on their comeback tour and it was a highlight for me musically, a true spectacle. Lovely, that. Going beyond the myths to depict a band that defined Brit pop, Simon Spence illustrates their incandescent talent and jaw-dropping success while contextualizing them in the 90s music scene. The book captures the magic that is The Stone Roses, getting to the heart of a band that have been perpetually and intentionally hard to fathom for 30 years. By all accounts they are an extremely lazy, unorganised, arrogant band, but for a brief moment captured the zeitgeist, so a lot of people of my generation are prepared to give them a hell of a lot of slack. Only disappointment was the lack of new information of the wilderness years Ian Brown, the frontman of the Stone Roses, had no intention of becoming a singer until one night, at a party in Manchester, he floated into a chance encounter with Geno Washington, a soul singer who told Brown he had star quality and ought to make the most of it. However, it would have been vastly improved had there been more information about the socioeconomic and musical history of Manchester; as well as many more personal anecdotes of which there were some, but not enough. Their debut album still dominates "best ever" lists, its melodies as sweet as the Beatles' and sometimes lifted wholesale — the climactic coda of "I Am the Resurrection" owes much to "The End" , its rhythms as loose as the Rolling Stones'. Politics Business Science Sport Roses Freshers Muse › Arts › Features Reviews Books Stone Roses’ guitarist John Squire talks to Li Peng Cheok about his move into art. By Li Peng Cheok Tuesday 25 May 2010 Bar Lane Studios, Micklegate Corner, Copyright; Bar Lane Studios How does one go about becoming an artist? Some move to Paris and wait for inspiration to strike, some start drawing from infancy and hope for the best, and some become rock stars first, and fall into painting once their band hits the rocks. That was the case for John Squire, former guitarist of pioneer English rock band, the Stone Roses. “You leave a few groups, become disillusioned, start painting,” he says languidly, brushing grey-streaked dark hair out of his eyes. Well, at least we know he still looks the part of a rock star. Squire’s involvement in art is not anything particularly new; his Jackson-Pollock-style artwork used to adorn the covers of Stone Roses albums, singles, and promotional posters while he was still involved in the band. However, it has only been in recent years that his art has become such a prominent part of his life. In 2004, he converted a barn near his home in Macclesfield into an art studio, started painting full time and held his first exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Arts in London. Since then, his art, described as “bold and dynamic and saturated with emotion” by Saatchi and Saatchi Art Magazine, has found great success.

I consider myself a fan but learnt a great deal from the story, which rollercoasters like any good tale. After reading on the Kindle I'm even keen to buy the hard copy for the photos! Adequate -- but mistake- laden, unbalanced, and strangely coldBy TatsuyaWhen I read the fantastic Intro to this book, I thought Spence had at last done what Stone Roses fans wanted -- delivered a scholarly, well-researched and sources-cited, well-written, thorough account of the band's rise and fall. The introduction details the famous Spike Island concert on May 27th, 1990, and does a wonderful job of painting a portrait of it, far better than any descriptions we've yet seen. From there, however, the book declines.

  • Kevin Shields the Buddyhead Interview by Aaron North
Buddyhead | http://www.buddyhead.com/music/kevinshields/ 19 Jan 2005 Kevin Shields The Buddyhead Interview by Aaron North The Icarus Line got to play with Primal Scream was in New York, and TI have to admit I was slightly disappointed at the time, because Kevin Shields wasn’t performing at the show. The word was that Kevin had to be at his brother’s wedding instead. It definitely added to the myth that I, and many other people as well, had built into our heads that Mr. Shields was some kind of mysterious recluse whose appearances could never be bargained on. The story of Kevin’s band My Bloody Valentine, and their demise, has up to this point sounded closer to folklore than something that happened less than a decade ago. Like a twisted version of the game “telephone”, My Bloody Valentine fans have perpetuated the tallest of tales ranging from master tapes of unreleased albums being set afire, to band reunions in far dark warehouses in Berlin. When The Icarus Line had the opportunity of again opening for Primal Scream, it would be a tour with them across the United Kingdom. When we encountered the band soundchecking on the first day in Glasgow, it occurred to me while I stared at them onstage, that between Kevin’s time in My Bloody Valentine, Mani’s in The Stone Roses, and even Bobby’s stint in The Jesus and Mary Chain, not to mention The Scream themselves, I was witnessing the composers of a good portion of my record collection back home.

PRESS NOTES RELEASE DATE – 5 JUNE 2013 Running Time: 96 mins Certificate: 15 CONTACT INFORMATION: Christelle Randall / Patrick Reed / Oliver Lavery (online) [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] THE STONE ROSES: MADE OF STONE Synopsis In 2012, a resurrection no one thought possible took place when legendary band, The Stone Roses reformed after 16 years. With unprecedented access to previously unseen archive footage, MADE OF STONE is a revealing journey through the life of one of the most revered and influential bands in British music history. Acclaimed film-maker Shane Meadows brings his unique directorial style, humour and emotional depth to the film, capturing the band at work and in their everyday lives as they rehearsed for their much-anticipated reunion, which culminated in three triumphant homecoming gigs at Manchester's Heaton Park in front of 220,000 adoring fans. Incorporating never-seen-before material spanning the band’s musical history, the personal experiences of many of those touched by the band and their music, and unparalleled access to the record-breaking sell-out concerts which took place in Summer 2012, this is the definitive record of the definitive band of the past 25 years. DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT Shane Meadows In 1990 I was 17, and had a ticket for Spike Island. For someone from a town like Uttoxeter, this was a big deal. But the night before the gig, I took acid, and had the most horrendous trip ever. For some reason, I gave my ticket away to some bloke I met in the street.

  • A University Dissertation on the Impact of the Stone Roses (May 2000)
A university dissertation on the impact of The Stone Roses (2000) "We don’t bear a grudge against anyone apart from Nick Kent because he’s a liar" : Journalism and the Stone Roses as part of the Manchester music scene from 1985 to July 1990 Nick Kent is a famous rock journalist and he was sent by the Face to interview the Stone Roses in December 1989, and the quotation that opens the title was a response as much to that interview, as a reflection of the Stone Roses trouble-some relationship with the press. The nature of careers and scenes prevents the time period from being arbitrary, but there are reasons for studying this period. For the music press this is a very interesting period, as this table suggests [Toynbee 93] In this is a period 5 magazines started and 2 weekly papers and 1 magazine ceased publishing. The sales figures as well show that fluctuating sales and varying demand for different magazines. The NME itself this was a time of great change. It had 2 different editors with the change from Ian Pye to Alan Lewis in mid-1987, and a fluctuating staff. The period also reflects a varied Stone Roses. Offering a rare opportunity to cover there entire history, Gary Johnson ran a review of their first gig in Sounds [Robb 97]. For most of the period, the band received no press coverage other than occasional single and live reviews. The level of coverage escalated in the last half of 1989, and the period ends with the block coverage of the Spike Island gig, one of the last gigs by the band for four years.
