A Uke Fest, You Say? But I don’t play the &%#$ ukulele! Well, you don’t have to play one to enjoy the New Jersey Uke Fest. Come on out on Friday or Saturday evening, August 25–26 for the concerts and listen to some wonderful music. Start time is 7:30pm at the nearby Ukrainian American Cultural Center of New Jersey in Whippany. Tickets are $20 for each show. More info at www.folkproject.org/njukefest. On Friday, hear Danielle Ate the Sandwich and The Lords of Liechtenstein, then join in the music jam. Danielle is a humorous singer/songwriter hailing from Fort Collins, Colorado, and The Lords have been hanging around The Folk Project since they were teenagers. On Saturday, we open with the cool sound of The Curt Sheller Jazz Trio, then get transported to Hawaii with the warm feel of Kimo Hussey’s sweet notes and finish off the evening with the beautiful songs and outstanding playing of Rachel Manke. The Acoustic Getaway The Fall Classic Reaches New Heights This Fall’s Acoustic Getaway is the most astonishing and fun-filled three-day music spectacular that we’ve thrown yet. The basics are the same. The roster is above all expectations. The Basics: for about $200 you get three concerts, 40 workshops, food, lodging, and the best dang weekend vacation ever. If you’ve ever wanted to listen to, talk with, learn from, and see up close and personal the fantastic musicians you’ve seen on stage, here is the best chance you’ll ever get: Columbus Weekend, October 6–8, 2017 at a Y camp near Hackettstown. The Amazing, Spectacular and Unique: We’ve loaded the performers roster with talent and joy beyond what many think possible at three times the price. They include and gui- tar legend and storyteller extraordinaire Roy Book Binder, power duo and purveyors of ukulele love Pete and Maura Kennedy, the explosive kick-butt-and-take-no-prisoners Celtic band Burning Bridgette Cleary, the exquisite guitar and mind-blowing fiddle team of Harvey Reid & Joyce Andersen, the elegant backwoods harmonies of the downhome Honey Dewdrops, the joyful sing- along fun of choirmaster and song leader Nick Page, the superb vocals and songwriting of Project (continued on page 6)

Fri., Aug. 4: The Inspire Project with Carolyn Messina The property spans two roads and there is a driveway on each, so the address “667 Hope-Johnsonburg Rd, Blairstown” is good too. Those of you who saw the Kennedys’ show back in December will undoubtedly remember The Inspire Project, who opened for them. These three power- house singer/songwriters have joined forces to entertain, uplift, motivate, and come together in harmony. This collaboration is a long-held dream of Tanya Leah, who, along with bandmates Ilene Angel, and Lorraine Ferro, comprise the group. Each is a #1 hit songwriter and powerful vocalist in her own right. Determined to put some musical goodness in the world, they present a unique blend of songs, stories, humor, and obvious friendship that draws in the listener and leaves one uplifted from the experience. Over the past nine years, the Folk Project community has seen FP member Carolyn Messina grow as a performer. She is a classically trained pianist, a self-taught guitarist, songwriter, and storyteller. She is also a cancer survivor, which colors her writing with a positive attitude and joy that is palpable and uplifting. Fri., Aug. 11: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. We’ve often seen previews of our regular scheduled acts for the first time at Open Stage. For information on how to secure a performance slot, call 973/335-9489, or visit www.OpenStage.FolkProject.org. Fri., Aug. 18: Robinson & Rohe with Gerry & Olga Jean Rohe has been associated with the Folk Project since she was eight as the prodigy star of her family band. She and Liam Robinson met a decade ago through their love of participatory music-making and American folk song. Their original repertoire is inspired by the traditions they hold dear and features carefully crafted lyrics, elegant vocal harmonies, and detailed arrangements for guitar, banjo, and accordion. Liam was a cast member in the Tony Award-winning play Warhorse, and recently music-directed the hit Off-Broadway folk opera Hadestown by songwriter Anais Mitchell. Jean’s songwriting has won accolades from the Independent Music Awards, ASCAP, and the Montreux Jazz Festival vocal contest. Gerry Hazel & Olga Alvarez are a married couple of Folk Project members. Since joining the Project in 2013, they have become part of our organization and our family. They sing original and cover songs in English and Spanish with beautifully blending voices and a charming stage presence.
