Public Exhibition for Jack Layton Ferry Terminal Design Competition Join us as we move to the next stage in the design competition for the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal and Harbour Square Park. The five shortlisted design teams will come together on Monday, March 16 at Toronto City Hall in the Rotunda to present their bold and innovative ideas to the public. The five design proposals will be on display in the Rotunda at Toronto City Hall from March 16 to March 20, 2015. Members of the public are welcome to view the exhibition and provide feedback beginning at 12:00 p.m. on March 16. The exhibition will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m from March 17 to March 19, but will close at 5:00 p.m. on March 20. Public feedback will also be collected through an online tool during this period. You can access the online feedback form as of March 16 – so stay tuned to our Facebook and Twitter pages for the direct link. We’ll also send a reminder to your email inbox. Public feedback will be summarized into a report and given to the jury – a group of distinguished art design professionals – to assist them in their evaluations of the five submissions. Want a recap? The Public Exhibition: Presentations from the five shortlisted design teams Date: Monday, March 16, 2015 Time: 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Toronto City Hall, Rotunda Location: 100 Queen Street West, Toronto, ON M5H 2N2. Map. Transit: You can take the Yonge Subway Line to Queen or Dundas station or the University/Spadina Subway Line to St. Patrick or Osgoode station. You can also take the #6 Bay bus to Queen Street West, #501 or #502 Queen streetcar to Bay Street, or the #505 Dundas streetcar to Bay Street.. Parking: Paid parking is available at City Hall. You can enter the parking garage at Bay Street, just north of Queen on the west side or at Queen Street, just west of Bay Street on the north side. Accessibility: The primary accessible entrance to Toronto City Hall is the Hagerman Street entrance (north entrance). There is a fully accessible ramp and the entry hours are from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. If you are arriving outside these hours please use the intercom to contact the Security Desk for access. See map for location. The alternative accessible entrance is through the City Hall main centre doors from 7:30a.m. to 9:30 p.m. There are also two fully accessible ramps located along Bay Street to access Nathan Phillips Square.     Executive Summary The objective of this report is to investigate the evolution of uses on two waterfront public spaces. These case studies are located in close proximity on Toronto’s Central Waterfront and are similar in size, but reflect radically different planning ideals and design methods. Harbour Square Park York Quay Harbour Square Park was developed as an afterthought to a public private partnership between the City of Toronto, the Toronto Harbourfront Commission and Campeau Corporation. It is surrounded by high rise, high density buildings that enclose the public realm of Harbour Square Park. The public space has been incrementally upgraded over the years by the City of Toronto. The other study area is York Quay, located between the Harbourfront Centre and redeveloped mixed use Queens Quay Terminal. York Quay was originally a parking lot for these two structures and was redeveloped by Waterfront Toronto in 2006 as a public space designed by West 8 and DTAH. The study area is characterized by the programming and temporary markets provided by the Harbourfront Centre. The contrasting approaches to public space redevelopment is significant to the research study, which was guided by the following research questions: • How have the techniques, methods and ideologies evolved in waterfront public space design in Toronto? • What components drive public use in Harbour Square Park and York Quay? • What design interventions can improve these two waterfront public spaces in the future? Research Methods and Evaluation Framework Ten evaluation criteria provided the framework for analyzing the past and present use of Harbour Square Park and York Quay. They were derived from the principles of Urban Strategies’ Central Waterfront Public Space Framework (2003) prepared for Waterfront Toronto.

The challenges many cities face today are products of their growth and success. Urbanization is a major global trend: 55% of humanity already lives in cities, and the UN projects that this figure will reach 68% by 2050. The Greater Toronto Area is home to nearly half of Ontarians (48.3%), a share that’s expected to keep growing. Toronto’s assets and systems —from housing to roads to transit—are strained precisely because so many people want to live and work here. In addition to facing challenges associated with its growth, Toronto is navigating trends that are shaping life across many jurisdictions. Toronto’s neighbourhoods have become more fractured along lines of income and identity. Opportunities related to technological and economic change have been unevenly distributed. Variations in social capital and trust leave some residents at increased risk of isolation. And extreme weather is becoming more frequent, raising concerns about the resilience of our built environment. Over the next five years, Toronto—and by extension Ontario and Canada, whose economies and reputations are tied to their largest city—has an opportunity to address some of the pressing urban problems of our time, growing economically while thriving socially and culturally.

This would focus on ferrying “permitted vehicles to and from Toronto Islands.” This is a good idea. However, a second ferry terminal, while perhaps primarily focussed on vehicles, must also serve passengers. The idea of a second ferry terminal serving the island, particularly but not exclusively for vehicles, did not in fact originate with ferrying vehicles for the airfield reconstruction program in 2016 and 2017 to Billy Bishop Airport as stated 3 in the MUSFR at p.

Power Downtown Toronto – Class Environmental Assessment Environmental Study Report Executive Summary Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One) has prepared this Environmental Study Report (ESR) for the proposed replacement of the existing 115-kilovolt (kV) underground transmission cables (circuits C5E and C7E) between Terauley Transformer Station (TS), near Bay Street and Dundas Street, and Esplanade TS, near Lower Sherbourne Street and The Esplanade, located in the downtown core of the City of Toronto. This cable replacement project is referred to as the Power Downtown Toronto Project (herein referred to as “the proposed Project”). The proposed Project is required to replace aging underground cables that were installed in the 1950s and are reaching their end of life. The proposed Project involves the installation of an underground tunnel at approximately 25 metres (m) below grade in the bedrock within existing road allowances to house the replacement cables. Three associated shafts will be constructed to provide access to the tunnel for operation and maintenance of the cables. The proposed Project also includes de-energizing, disconnecting and capping the existing 115 kV cables that run along York Street and Queens Quay. The proposed Project is subject to the Class Environmental Assessment (EA) for Minor Transmission Facilities (Hydro One, 2016), an approved planning process under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act (EAA). This ESR has been prepared in accordance with the requirements of the EAA and describes the Class EA process that has been undertaken for the proposed Project.
