Southern Discomfort: Clanking, Rattling, and Screaming in The Texas Chain Saw... 1 Southern Discomfort: Clanking, Rattling, and Screaming in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (Tobe Hooper, 1974) Christophe Chambost Introduction 1 In his introduction of Music in the Horror Film, Neil Lerner stresses the prevailing role of sounds in horror films: sounds are essential because one cannot just cover one’s ears to make the soundtrack fully disappear (whereas two eyelids are enough to cancel an unwanted image) (VIII). Referring to Charles Darwin, the scholar also insists on the vital role of ears in the development of man as a species, and he even goes further than the biologist, asserting that a wider range of emotions can be triggered by music. Agreeing with Darwin, Lerner admits that music can awaken gentle feelings like tenderness and love, but he adds that it can also exacerbate feelings of horror, fear, and rage in films (VIII).

“YOU’VE SEEN THE MOVIE, NOW PLAY THE VIDEO GAME”: RECODING THE CINEMATIC IN DIGITAL MEDIA AND VIRTUAL CULTURE Stefan Hall A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2011 Committee: Ronald Shields, Advisor Margaret M. Yacobucci Graduate Faculty Representative Donald Callen Lisa Alexander © 2011 Stefan Hall All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ronald Shields, Advisor Although seen as an emergent area of study, the history of video games shows that the medium has had a longevity that speaks to its status as a major cultural force, not only within American society but also globally. Much of video game production has been influenced by cinema, and perhaps nowhere is this seen more directly than in the topic of games based on movies. Functioning as franchise expansion, spaces for play, and story development, film-to-game translations have been a significant component of video game titles since the early days of the medium. As the technological possibilities of hardware development continued in both the film and video game industries, issues of media convergence and divergence between film and video games have grown in importance. This dissertation looks at the ways that this connection was established and has changed by looking at the relationship between film and video games in terms of economics, aesthetics, and narrative. Beginning in the 1970s, or roughly at the time of the second generation of home gaming consoles, and continuing to the release of the most recent consoles in 2005, it traces major areas of intersection between films and video games by identifying key titles and companies to consider both how and why the prevalence of video games has happened and continues to grow in power.

Mots-clés : horreur, remake, théorie féministe, post-féminisme, politiques identitaires. Remakes, as Linda Hutcheon has noted, “are invariably adaptations because of changes in context” (170), and this in spite of the fact that the medium remains the same. What Robert Stam has said of film adaptations is equally true of remakes: “they become a barometer of the ideological trends circulating during the moment of production” because they “engage the discursive energies of their time” (45).

00:00:00 Music Music "Switchblade Comb" by Mobius VanChocStraw. A jaunty, jazzy tune reminiscent of the opening theme of a movie. Music continues at a lower volume as April introduces herself and her guest, then fades out. 00:00:08 April Wolfe Host Welcome to Switchblade Sisters, where women get together to slice and dice our favorite action and genre films. I'm April Wolfe. Every week, I invite a new female filmmaker on—a writer, director, actor, or producer—and we talk in-depth about one of their fave genre films, perhaps one that influenced their own work in some strange way. Today I'm really excited to have writer/comedian Megan Amram with me. Hi! 00:00:27 Megan Guest Hi! Amram 00:00:28 April Host For those of you who are not familiar with Megan's work, please let me give you an introduction. [Music fades out.] Megan Amram is a native of Portland, Oregon. She was an early adapter of using Twitter to craft and hone jokes, and received a fair bit of attention that helped her get some writing gigs. One of those first jobs had her writing for the 83rd Academy Awards, but the next year she earned a spot in the writers' room of the Amy Poehler series Parks and Rec. After that show's successful run wrapped, Megan went on to Kroll Show, Childrens Hospital, Transparent, and Silicon Valley, before the producers of Parks and Rec came calling for a new comedy series, The Good Place, starring Kristen Bell and Ted Danson.

  • Aesthetic Sensibility in the Texas Chain Saw Massacre
“Dead Art”: Aesthetic Sensibility in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre “That guy cut the hell out of himself. Do you think you could do that to yourself? It takes something, just to do—that—to yourself....” —Franklin Hardesty in The Texas Chain Saw Massacre Open with scene from Un Chien Andalou Like the eye being sliced open, as we see in the 1928 surrealist avant-garde film Un Chien Andalou—a paradigmatic moment of self-consciousness about the nature of vision—horror film represents a visceral attempt to make visible the practices of seeing. As Carol Clover, J. P. Telotte, and a host of other scholars have noted, horror film is obsessed with eyes, with the acts and effects and problematics of looking; in film studies, at least since Laura Mulvey, scholars have been consumed with the assaultivei quality of the gaze, an assaultive quality made manifest, though not always unproblematically, in horror films.ii In the film I want to discuss today, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre of 1974, the assaultive gaze is enacted in many ways, perhaps most famously in the dinner scene [play]. The content of extreme horror, too, has rendered the ethics and aesthetics of looking frighteningly visible; who would take a camera and film an evisceration, in all its bloody detail? Why is it on the screen at all? Should we watch such scenes? Much less watching, should we enjoy them? What is their purpose?iii In contemporary reviews of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, these questions were posed emphatically—and the answers were almost universally similar.
