It has induced irregular and sudden glacier fluctuations leading to the progression of glacial lakes, and thus enhancing the risk of Glacier Lake Outbursts Floods (GLOF) in the mountain systems of Pakistan. Lack of up-to-date inventory, classification, and susceptibility profiles of glacier lakes and newly formed GLOFs, are few factors which pose huge hindrance towards disaster preparedness and risk reduction strategies in Pakistan. This study aims to bridge the existing gap in data and knowledge by exploiting satellite observations, and efforts are made to compile and update glacier lake inventories. GLOF susceptibility assessment is evaluated by using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), a multicriteria structured technique based on three susceptibility contributing factors: Geographic, topographic, and climatic. A total of 294 glacial lakes are delineated with a total area of 7.85 ± 0.31 km2 for the year 2018. -

The line shows Cˇmárik and Kopold’s harrowing descent of the northwest face, with (a) marking the gully that avalanched and swept Kopold 150m. The NW face is home to the 1999 American, Russian, and German routes, while the 2003 Ukrainian attempt climbs the promi- nent detached pillar just left of the NW face, continuing high up the left skyline of GT’s summit tower. The Azeem Ridge (2004) roughly follows the right-hand skyline, and the Cˇmárik- Kopold route (Assalam Alaikum) ascends farther right, out-of-view. Vlado Linek Great Trango, southwest face to south face (Assalam Alaikum), not to summit; Hainabrakk East Tower, south southeast face (Mystical Denmo); Shipton Spire, east face to northeast ridge, to with- in 80m of summit (Prisoners of the Shipton); and Ship of Fools, attempt. A joint Czech-Slovak expedition visited the Baltoro from July 26 to August 31. The team comprised eight climbers from Slovakia: Gabo Čmárik, Andrej Kolárik, Igor Koller, Jozef Kopold, Pavol Pekarčík, Juraj Poděbraský, Erik Rabatin, and I. There were four climbers from the Czech Republic: Milan Benian, Martin Klonfar, Petr Piechowicz, and Miroslav Turek. Čmárik, Kopold, Koller, and I had climbed in this region during 2004 and had unfinished projects. In particular Čmárik and Kopold wanted to climb a new line in alpine-style on the south side of Great Trango (6,286m), right of the 2004 American route, Azeem Ridge. -

Climbs & Expeditions: Pakistan I 199 PAKISTAN during the winter of 2014-’15, Tomas Mackiewicz (Poland) and Elizabeth Revol (France) reported reaching 7,800m (likely the same point as the Austrians). Mackiewicz and Revol tried again in 2015-’16, making to 7,500m with Arsalan Ahmed Ansari (Pakistan) From the small col at 7,760m, it would be possible to reach the 8,126m main summit either by following the original 1953 route or by traversing to the upper Kinshofer Route. – LINDSAY GRIFFIN, FROM INFORMATION PROVIDED BY MARKUS GSCHWENDT, AUSTRIA HINDU KUSH TIRICH MIR, NORTHWEST FACE, RARE ASCENT AND MINOR VARIATION French climbers Jérôme Chazelas and Thomas Quillet reported reaching the summit of Tirich Mir (7,708m), the highest peak in the Hindu Kush, in July, via the normal route (1967 Czechoslovak Route) up the northwest face. The crux of this route is climbing a couloir above [Above] Ganalo Peak at sunset from high on the northwest face of Nanga Parbat, during a 2008 attempt on the normal site of Camp 3 (ca 6,700m). Here, rather than climb the couloir direct, the two the northwest face. Markus Gschwendt moved out left onto snow slopes and climbed more mixed ground to the ridge above. They placed a high camp above the couloir at 7,200m and then took six hours to reach the summit. HIMALAYA More significant is that Tirich Mir, accessed through Chitral and lying very close to the Afghan border, has seen very little recent activity because of the perceived heightened terrorist threat in this area. This appears to be the first time the mountain has been summited since the NANGA PARBAT, NORTHWEST FACE VIA DIAMA GLACIER, PREVIOUSLY summer of 2001. -

Executive summary on Attabad landslide survey in Hunza 7-17 April 2010 Short introduction This report provides a summary of the key findings of a short field visit (10-13 April, 2010) to the Attabad landslide and damming site in the Hunza Valley. This report provides some risk/hazard management recommendations regarding Saret and Gogal villages, upstream and downstream of the Hunza river, elaborated based on our field observations. An international group of geologists and researchers were involved in the survey: Dr. Chiara Calligaris – Geosciences Departement (DIGEO) - Trieste University (Italy) Mr. Michele Comi – Ev-K2-CNR (Italy) Dr. Shahina Tariq – Baharia University (Islamabad – Pakistan) Mr. Furrukh Bashir – Pakistan Meteorological Department Mr. Deear Karim – FOCUS Humanitarian Assistance Mr. Hawas Khan – KIU University (Gilgit – Pakistan) Some documentation on the landslide is already available (Petley, 2010) and we begin our report based on Petley’s findings so as to avoid repeating previously made considerations. Background of potential glacial lake outburst floods in the Hunza Valley Sixty historical damburst events have been reported in the northern part of Pakistan. This gives an average recurrence frequency of about one event every 3 year. For ice-dam failures with floods exceeding 20,000 cumecs (9 events in 100 yrs), the apparent frequency is one event every 11 years. For floods exceeding 11,000 cumecs (17 events in 100 yrs) the apparent frequency is one event 1 every 6 years (POE, 1988). The majority of recorded damburst flood events over the last 200 years have been glacial lake outburst floods. A few events have resulted from the failure of landslide dams, the most well known being those of June 1841 and August 1858. -

Source : www.pib.nic.in Date : 2020-05-08 SEASONAL RAPID ADVANCEMENT OF SURGING GLACIERS IN KARAKORAM RANGE: A POTENTIAL NATURAL HAZARD Relevant for: Geography | Topic: Various Landforms, Changes Therein and the Effects of Such Changes Ministry of Science & Technology Seasonal rapid advancement of surging glaciers in Karakoram Range: A potential natural hazard Posted On: 07 MAY 2020 5:45PM by PIB Delhi Scientists from Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology(WIHG), Dehradun an autonomous institute under the Department of Science & Technology have found a seasonal advancement in 220 surge-type glaciers in the Karakoram Range of Ladakh through detailed assessment of some major surging glaciers of the Karakoram range using satellite images and thermal data. ‘Surging’ or ‘Surge-type’ glaciers are a certain type of glaciers that have shown advancement in volume and length over a period of time. The behaviour of these glaciers, which represent 40% of the total glaciated area of the Karakoram goes against the normal trend of considerable reduction in volume and length of most glaciers in the Himalaya in recent decades. Surging of glaciers is potentially catastrophic as it can lead to the destruction of villages, roads and bridges. It can also advance across a river valley and form ice-dammed lake. These lakes can form catastrophic outburst floods. Therefore, monitoring of glacier surges, ice-dammed lake formation, and drainage is of paramount importance. Assessment and regular monitoring of surge-type glaciers of Karakoram has been a daunting task. Because in the conventional method, it required a ground-level assessment of subglacial flows. Keeping these challenges in mind, a team of Scientists from WIHG led by Dr Rakesh Bhambri, carried out a detailed assessment of some major surging glaciers of the Karakoram rangecrackIAS.com using of multi-temporal and multi-sensor satellite images (Landsat 8 OLI, ASTER and Sentinel-2), Digital Elevation Models (DEM) and thermal data. -

On August 5 Graziano Ferrari, Stefano Mazzoli and Albert0 Fogli placed Camp II at 17,700 feet and on the 8th climbed P 6110* (20,046 feet; 2 miles south of Camp I on the valley’s east ridge). On August 9 Ferrari and Mazzoli climbed P 5930 (19,456 feet; 2 miles west of Camp I on the west ridge). That same day Ricardo Lorenzi, the 18- year-old girl Flavia Masini, Marco Rosa, Angelo Zatti, liaison officer Zagad and I set out from Camp I to establish Camp III at 5330 meters (17,487 feet; 3 miles southwest of Camp I near the head of the glacier). On August 10 we climbed P 5810 (19,062 feet; at the western side of the head of the glacier). On August 12 Ferrari and Ettore Nanni ascended P 5710 ( 18,734 feet; one mile south of P 5930). On August 13 Lorenzi, Nanni, Zatti and Rosa from Camp II again climbed P 6110. On August 15 Mazzoli and Fogli made the difficult ascent of P 5680 (18,635 feet; 3 miles southwest of Base Camp on the east ridge). We moved back to Base Camp. On August 16 Ferrari, Fabio Bertoncelli, Marco Mairani and Rainer Stechel climbed P 5330 (17,487 feet; % mile northwest of 28). They found a cairn on top. -

Spatial distribution of debris cover and its impacts in the Hunza River Basin Yong Zhang1, Shiyin Liu2, and Xin Wang1 1Hunan University of Science and Technology, Xiangtan, China ([email protected]) 2Institute of International Rivers and Eco-Security, Yunnan University, Yunnan, China Hunza River is an important tributary of the Indus River, which contributes ~12% of the total runoff in the upper Indus River. 25% of Hunza River basin is covered by glaciers. The Karakoram Highway (KKH) connecting Pakistan and China goes from the Khunjerab Pass and down to the Gilgit, which is an important section of the Pakistan-China Economic Corridor in the high mountains. Many glaciers in this region are extensively covered by supraglacial debris, which strongly influences glacier melting and its spatial pattern. Changes in these glaciers may threaten the stability of the highway subgrade through meltwater floods, unpredictable behaviors of glacier terminals as well as potential outburst floods of glacier lakes near glaciers. Therefore, predicting runoff, response to climate change and risk of outburst floods of debris-covered glaciers requires different treatment to that of clean glaciers in the Hunza River Basin. In this study, we estimate the thermal resistance of the debris layer for the whole basin based on ASTER images. Our results reveal that debris- covered glaciers account for 69% and 30% of the total number and area in the basin. Using a physically-based debris-cover effect assessment model, we find different debris-cover effects on different glaciers, with important implications for the morphology and evolution of glacier hydrological system and associated hazards. -

The lecture was about my seasons of field work in the Karakorum Himalaya. Norton Ginsberg, the director of the Institute, alerted me to the fact that the Encyclopedia Britannica would be revising their entries on Asian mountains shortly and suggested that I update the Karakorum entry. The eventual publication of that entry under my name (Allan 1992), however, omitted most of the literature references I had accumulated. As my reference list continued to expand I decided to order them in some coherent fashion and publish them as a sourcebook to coincide with the IUCN workshop on mountain protected areas in Skardu in September 1994. -
