Abstract The events of 1956 (the Twentieth CPSU Congress, Khrushchev’s Secret Speech, and the Hungarian revolution) had a strong impact on the evolution of the Romanian communist regime, paving the way for the withdrawal of Soviet troops from Roma- nia in 1958, the stricter policy toward the Transylvanian Hungarians, and Romania’s greater independence from the USSR in the 1960s. -
Education in Romania: a Decade of Change. SPONS AGENCY Office of Education (DHEW), Washington, D.C
DOCUMENT RESUME ED 065 419 SO 003 774 AUTHOR Braham, Randolph L. TITLE Education in Romania: A Decade of Change. SPONS AGENCY Office of Education (DHEW), Washington, D.C. REPORT NO DHEW-0E-14161 PUB DATE 72 CONTRACT OEC-0-70-3272 NOTE 155p. EDRS PRICE MF-$0.65 HC-$6.58 DESCRIPTOR'S Adult Education; *Comparative Education; *Educational Administration; *Educational Change; *Educational Development; Educational History; Educational Philosophy; Educational Policy; *Educational Practice; Educational Programs; Elementary Education; Government Role; Higher Education; Preschool Education; Secondary Education; Vocational Education IDENTIFIERS *Romania ABSTRACT This second study of Romanian education reports important reforms that have strengthened the educational system and, moreover, provides a picture of the system at all education levels as of the 1969-70 academic year. Since Communist acquisition of power late in 1947, three major educational reforms have reflected a progressive nationalistic educational trend. The first, in 1947, aligned Romania's Western-oriented educational system with that of the Soviet Union; the second, in 1955, called for reorganization of the schools along polytechnical lines. Revealing a bolder posture toward national independence and also reflecting political aspirations and educational objectives of the regime, the third reform in the 1960's was designed to further Romania's long-range plans for industrialization and technical development and fostered change in general education, higher education, teacher education, and the vocational system. Among the achievements of this latter reform were: 1)the revitalization and modernization of higher education, and alignment of Romania's higher education with the modernization process occurring in the west; 2) extension from 8 to 10 years of free and compulsory education; 3) a rise of enrollment at all levels; and, 4) reorganization of vocational education. -
The Development of Analytical Chemistry in Romania
THE DEVELOPMENT OF ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY IN ROMANIA GRIGORE POPA Department of Analytical Chemistry, University of Bucharest, Romania ABSTRACT A brief history is given of the development of analytical chemistry in Romania. Aspects concerning the teaching of analytical chemistry in Romanian univer- sities as well as the achievements of the scientific research in this field are presented. The earliest beginnings of analytical chemistry in the territory of our country can be traced back to identify themselves with those of chemistry itself. The more so as analytical chemistry is one of the branches of chemistry with the widest range of applications in all fields of economic life. Its theoretical character materializes in the study of the properties of materials in terms of concentration P =f(c)and the development of analytical methods, whereas the practical character resides in the analytical techniques themselves. In fact, the study of materials with a view to using them has been the concern of man since the earliest times, a concern that was manifest in this country, too. In the following I shall try to outline the major stages in the development of analytical chemistry and of its teaching in our country. Certain skills, such as the potters', the smiths' or metal workers' (with the Dacians), etc. requiring practical chemical knowledge have long been familiar to the country's inhabitants. But the lack of written documents would make it impossible in practice to state a precise date for the beginning of the development of chemistry in our country. In feudal times, with the exception of boroughs, a number of trades sprang into being, closely connected with the processing of material products, which helped develop chemistry to a certain extent. -
Medical Information in the Cultural Weekly Tribuna, 1957 When Ideology Influences the Presentation of Scientific Data
Medical Information in the Cultural Weekly Tribuna, 1957 When Ideology Influences the Presentation of Scientific Data DINU I. DUMITRAªCU, DAN L. DUMITRAªCU Introduction RIBUNA IS one of the most important cultural journals of Transylvania. It was found- Ted in Sibiu in 1884 as a daily journal, issued for almost 20 years, until 1903 (1). Its publication continued with interruptions and changes of the name (Tribuna Poporului) and of its printing location (from Sibiu to Arad) till before World War 1 (2). Nowadays it is issued again in a new series, after several years of discontinuation caused by the post-communist turmoil affecting Romanian society. In 1957 a new series of Tribuna was born, in the socio-cultural context of the so-called revolutionary transformation following the change of the political regime and after the worst Stalinist years of the 5th decade of the 20th century. The editorial office and pub- lisher were located in Cluj, the main cultural center in Transylvania. Medical Topics in Tribuna, 1957 HE NEW series now celebrates 60 years of publication and it indeed reflects the cul- Ttural life of that epoch, not only from Romania, but also from the Iron Curtain countries (sister countries, as they were called) and from other countries. Many articles are also dedicated to pro-communist cultural events and personalities. The journal was printed on poor quality paper, and therefore now the pages are yellowish. The large format pages (of the same size as the nowadays copies) are filled with small letters, allowing the inclusion of much information, distributed on 4 columns per page. -

Keywords: Analytical Chemistry, History, Romanian Analytical Chemists 1. Geographic and locational problems with inclusions Analytical Chemistry as science and discipline has very old routes in Romania. Many Romanian analytical chemists with international reputations have carried out research in Romania, whilst others have used abroad the high level of skills and knowledge gained during their studies in Romania. To produce an account of the people and places that are important in the history of analytical chemistry in Romania has posed similar problems to those encountered when producing an equivalent account for Germany [1]. These are the definition of the land area to regard as pertinent, the inclusion or otherwise of expatriates, such as Nicolae Teclu (1839-1916) [2], whose main work was carried out outside Romania, as defined herein. Further problems arise when dealing with the early period due to the lack of written documents on the activities of potters, smiths and other metalworkers whose activities required empirical chemical knowledge, as noted by Popa [3].
