A Surplus of Melancholy: |The Discourse of Mourning in Freud, Benjamin, and Derrida Carol L. Bernstein Bryn Mawr College One of the most striking features of contemporary discourse in both literary theory and philosophy is the persistence of mourning. Subtext rather than subject, dynamic rather than performance, it emerges in critical texts where one would have expected it to play no more than an insignificant role. Why introduce it into the analysis of capitalist society, of storytelling, of psychoanalytic theory? What one ordinarily grasps as a state of mind, a ritual, or a literary genre (the mourning play) emerges almost by association, as an apparently improper supplement. Marx begins the Communist Manifesto with the term “specter,” which Derrida links to the specter of Hamlet’s father and thus to Hamlet’s mourning and mourning in general. A grandson plays his game (Spiel) of fort-da, and Freud’s account of it screens his mourning in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, in Derrida’s interpretation. From Spiel to Trauerspiel, mourning repeats itself in the play of ideas. In the latter genre, Benjamin’s topic, German baroque mourning plays, reveals a relatively early instance of the surplus of melancholy that would appear often in Benjamin’s later writing. In these major thinkers, the theoretical and tonal inflections of mourning shade into one another. Before turning to their work, however, let us separate it from the representation of mourning properly found in elegy and related genres, including texts adopting perspectives distant from a lost arcadia or paradise, whether classical, biblical or psychological. In both direct and distanced kinds of elegy, the “work of mourning” patterns poetic movement, conveying the speaker from a moment of loss to the symbolic recovery of the lost object or person. -

Critical theory is therefore not limited to a particular field or even to specific content; it is involved wherever methods, concepts, and social formations are not simply taken for granted but subjected to systematic and rigorous critical reflection. Some 80-100 students participate in Northwestern’s Interdisciplinary Cluster in Critical Theory. The cluster provides a thorough introduction to critical theory through interdepartmental course offerings. Exposure to critical theory is highly recommended for students of literature, philosophy, politics, culture, the visual arts, gender and race studies, rhetoric, and society in our post-colonial, post-modern world. The Cluster offers the possibility of graduate student accreditation through the Interdisciplinary Graduate Certificate in Critical Theory. The Cluster promotes intellectual exchange between graduate students and faculty with related interests in different departments and programs. -

Confidence Sans Bound: Staging Trust and Its Vulnerabilities in Tieck, Kleist, Grillparzer, and Nietzsche Tim Albrecht Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Tim Albrecht All rights reserved ABSTRACT Confidence Sans Bound: The Staging of Trust and Its Vulnerabilities in Tieck, Kleist, Grillparzer, and Nietzsche Tim Albrecht This dissertation draws on contemporary philosophical and sociological approaches to trust and engages them in a dialog with literary, poetological, and philosophical texts from the nineteenth century. In doing so it seeks to explore both what other disciplines have to offer to literary studies with regard to the interpretation of trust as a literary motif, as well as to show how literary texts evoke compelling scenarios in which the conceptual and semantic complexities of the phenomenon of trust take on theatrical, rhetorical, and narrative forms that can both illustrate and challenge sociological or philosophical claims. Close readings of texts by Ludwig Tieck, Heinrich von Kleist, Franz Grillparzer, and Friedrich Nietzsche offer new interpretations of canonical texts and discuss the relationship of trust to aesthetics, cultural memory, mythography, and performativity. Whereas traditional philosophical discourses aspire to transcend this limit, deconstruction affirms on the contrary its necessity; not as a higher principle that relativizes truth and renders all our calculations futile, as is commonly suggested by flippant appropriations of Derrida’s work, but as a structural property within every event and every concept, every mark. Rather than a mere impediment to the pursuit of truth then, the incalculable forms a necessary correlative of the pursuit itself. Deconstruction effectively attests to and exemplifies the dependence of every philosophical discourse on its irreducible, inherent limitation. With reference to numerous commentaries on Derrida’s work, Chapter 1 shows that the unconditional indeterminability of a deconstructive, methodological identity is indissociable from deconstruction’s critical import.
