Quality contest watermelons are judged at the Union Parish Extension Service by measuring sugar content of the watermelons with a refractometer. At 9 a.m. Saturday, the festival parade begins at the old Union Parish High School and travels down Main Street before circling a block and returning to the high school. All day, vendors are open on the Courthouse Square. The watermelon auction begins at 10 a.m. on the Courthouse Square. 2019 Newcomer’s & Visitor’s Guide 19 Angling to help special needs kids C.A.S.T. event teaches fishing, fun For many children living in the Sportsman’s Paradise of Louisiana, fishing is a big part of summer activities. But for some other children, fishing doesn’t come so easy. That’s where C.A.S.T. (which stands for Catch A Special Thrill) for Kids comes in. The national C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation enriches the lives of chil- dren with special needs, supports their families, and strengthens com- munities through the sport of fishing. On Aug. 10, the third annual C.A.S.T. for Kids event was held at D’Arbonne Pointe on Lake D’Arbonne, with 17 Louisiana special needs children reeling in both fun and love. “Many of the children don’t get the opportunity to fish, so this event allows us to introduce them to the sport of fishing,” said Brandon Jen- nings, Louisiana Coordinator for C.A.S.T. For Kids. “A lot of times people go to an activity that’s not based for special needs children, and the children and their parents ending up feeling left out. This event is the opposite — it’s for those children that need special attention.” The socialization aspect of the event is also important for the chil- dren and their parents. “Parents can bring their kid here and it’s not a struggle — they know the children are going to be taken care of and they can relax and enjoy their day,” Jennings said. “It’s a good chance for both kids and parents to meet new friends they can relate to because they go through the same kinds of things.” — T. Scott Boatright

2019 Newcomer’s & Visitor’s Guide 21 Lessons from the past Larce Holder leaves lasting legacy for Union Parish — T. Scott Boatright ome people simply naturally seem larger than life. Late Slongtime Farmerville resident Larce Holder was one of those people — someone who will leave a lasting impression and legacy long after they’re gone. “He was like Forrest Gump and Indiana Jones all wrapped up into one person,” said longtime friend Lisa Crow. “He could do anything and everything. We’re talking about a man who earned a black belt in karate at the age of 60.” An outstanding outdoorsman, Holder found himself in a “Sports- man’s Paradise” in the piney hills of Union Parish, and as someone known as “Farmerville’s Renais- sance Man,” he spent much time molding young men into the kind of people and leaders our nation needs and preparing them for their lives ahead. Holder, who passed away at the age of 98 on June 17, 2019, at the War Veterans Home in Monroe, was a self-made man. Born in 1921, Holder was only 8 years old when the Great Depression struck our country and taught him at a young age about the frugality that could become a cor- nerstone of his life and something he passed on to future generations that learned from him. In the Army during WWII, Holder served in a cartography unit. Milesof Waterways Finch Lake Finch Lake is a natural lake that was dammed up to con- trol the water level. It is flooded annually by the Ouachita River, which adds to the great fishing. It is located in the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Management area. This is a stumpy lake, best fished by small flat bottom aluminum boats or kayaks. This is a very nice place to paddle and there aren’t any large boats because it is a stumpy lake. The small motor boats that are there go slow. The area around the lake is all natural because the lake is surrounded by the Upper Ouachita National Wildlife Management area. The shore of the lake is surrounded by button willow and cypress trees. It is a duck sanctuary, and in the winter a paddler can get close to hundreds, sometimes thousands of ducks of all types. No guns are allowed, but a camera would be a good asset. The lake is noted for its good fishing. Bass, bream and catfish are caught in the hot months. The locals run yo-yo’s at night during the winter.
