Yearbook 2009
Foreword Dear Chess Friends As I started this report I had just heard the sad news that IM Bob Wade had died aged 87. I first met Bob at one of the Whitby Congresses and in 1972 he played in the Teesside GM Tournament where I recall he beat the three Hungarian players Portisch, Bilek and Sax. Earlier in the year we also had the loss of a great servant of the Federation John Dunleavy. I seemed to have known John for such a long time. He was renowned for his wisdom and courtesy and I regarded him as a true friend. 2008 saw more changes in the ECF Board with four resignations after the April Council. A new Board was soon elected and ECF continued to operate. I want to thank the four people who came on to ECF Board in 2006 because they did at least try to bring about changes in ECF, maybe it was too much too quick. Stewart Reuben found a sponsor for the English teams in the Dresden Olympiad, I have thanked LV= for their generous support and hope that it may continue. The chess for schools project remained in the headlines for quite some time, I hope that as you read this year book all issues have been resolved. As I write we are in the midst of an economic crisis and it is too early to say if there has been any impact on The JR Trust or The PIF. Liverpool as part of City of Culture celebrations staged the EU Championship as well as our own British Championships. -

As for the women, Italy «A» took all three poin- ts, while Italy «B» was not able to put some resistance against a very strong Dutch team. AmongF the favorites, perfect scores for Russia, Netherlands, Bulgaria, Spain, England, Germany, Romania and Georgia among others. Th e surprise of the day is the victory from Morocco – 3:1 against India. As for the actual champions from Ukraine, they were obliged to concede half a point on bord number one, where Ivanchuk didn’t manage to outplay Sergey Krilov, the ac- tual World Champion for blind players. It was written over the last couple of years. A lot of work has gone into this book and the accompanying volume Technical Decision Making in Chess, which deals with a wider range of technical topics, whereas this book focuses on positions without minor pieces. It has been four years since the publication of Dynamic Decision Making in Chess and certainly there will be one person out there wondering what happened to us and why the third volume was taking so long to complete. I hope that the content alone of these two books will answer that question. Shipov, Rodshtein, Igor Burshtein, Gelfand and Huzman at the 2009 World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk 6 Boris Gelfand – Decision Making in Major Piece Endings As with the previous volumes, we have allowed the material to dictate the format, rather than trying to force it into a preconceived notion of what the book should look like. -

Occasionally he distances himself from the lead character, and at times he is that character, at first little Vovik from the fifties, who is engrossed in playing “cops and robbers” till dusk in the courtyards of Odessa, then Vova, a serious and independent boy, making decisions difficult even for grown-ups. “I was guiding him, a thinker and a bit of a bore, too proper, bookish and with no real life experience (where would it come from?), down the right path, or rather, I was helping him avoid clearly wrong ones. -

Chess Canada 2007-3 1 2 Chess Canada 2007-3 Ottawa stages a spectacular Canadian Open and a record breaking Canadian Youth Chess Championship. 4 Chess Canada 2007-3 Chess Canada 2007-3 5 6 Editorial Chess Canada 2007-3 EDITORIAL Robert Hamilton Yours truly, Robert Hamilton Chess Canada 2007-3 New Kid on the Block 7 by Robert Hamilton Artem Samsonkin arrived in Canada about a half year ago. Already an IM, the talented 17 year old soon found his way to Toronto’s Bayview Chess Club, where he quickly proved that he could do battle with Canada’s elite. A few months later, Artem asked the federation for special permission to play in the Canadian Senior Championship in spite of not having been resident long enough. Permission was granted, and Artem wound up tied first in the championship and came within one t ie-break match of being crowned Canadian Champion. Born in Minsk, Belarus, Artem Samsonkin learned to play chess as a young boy after receiving a chess set as a birthday gift. Fortunately for Artem, his grandfather had a keen interest in chess, and the two duked it out for about a year before Artem began receiving formal chess training. Artem's talent immediately began to shine through, photo: monroi.com and within the next few years he was champion/co-champion at the U10, 12, 14, 16 & 18 age categories for Belarus. In addition to national successes, Artem had plenty of success playing internationally on behalf of his country. Artem’s style is characterized by daring attacking play.
