Oh, and coach Todd Bowles reiterated on Wednesday that he will be New York’s starter for the fi nal four games of the regular season. “That was my plan and my expectation, so to hear that reaf- fi rms it, but I had every expec- tation of doing that anyway,” McCown said. “So I’m glad to hear it and excited about this game and then the rest of the season.” McCown will start his 13th game on Sunday at Denver, matching his career high set back in 2004 while playing for Arizona in his third NFL season. Since that year with the Car- dinals, McCown had started more than nine games just once: when he was under center for 11 games with Tampa Bay three years ago. Now, he has a shot, barring injury, to play in all 16 for the fi rst time. “Certainly, it’s something that I would like to accomplish, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “It’s a one-game-at-a-time mentality, but I have a ton of C M respect for the guys that have played and started for a long Y K time in consecutive games, whether it’s (Brett) Favre, or Tom (Brady) or Peyton and Eli (Manning), all those guys. It’s impressive what those guys have been able to do. “So for me just to go out, especially at this point in my career, and get 16 games is something to be proud of.” Tossing a career-high 18 touchdown passes is also quite the accomplishment. Last Sunday, McCown threw for 331 yards and a TD and also ran for two scores in leading New York to a 38-31 victory over Kansas City . The Illini (7-3) shot just 39.6 percent from the fi eld and made just 21 fi eld goals, but it was enough to snap a three- game losing streak.Illinois made 6 of 9 shot attempts to start the game and jumped out to an early 13-6 lead but went score- less for almost six minutes. The Governors went on an 11-0 run to take the lead but weren’t able to sustain an offensive rhythm either, shooting only 41.4 percent from the fi eld. The turning point came with just under fi ve minutes left in the game. Locked at 50, Kipper Nichols stole an entry pass to the post and pushed the ball ahead. On the other end, Da’Monte Williams spotted up on the right wing, and nailed a 3-pointer to push the Illini ahead for good. With 19.6 seconds left, Te’Jon Lucas was fouled on a layup attempt. He knocked down both free throws to make it a two-possession game and seal the victory. In his fi rst career start, Williams fi nished with fi ve points, four rebounds and a team-high three steals. The Governors were led by freshman Terry Taylor and senior Averyl Ugba. Both players combined for 28 points and 15 rebounds, but their performances weren’t enough to help Austin Peay (4-5) a victory from its fourth Power Five opponent of the season.Illinois has now won 12 consecutive non-conference home games. NON-HUGGER SEEKS POLITE WAY TO KEEP OTHERS AT ARM’S LENGTH

DEAR ABBY: I am not a hugger. In fact, I pretty much always hate it. But people think I’m rude when I don’t open my arms to hug after they’ve opened theirs. And they also think I’m rude when I tell them I’m not really a hugger. It happens with friends, fellow church congregants and audience members (I’m an entertainer) all the time. Although I let the hugs happen, I’m usually holding my breath the whole time. Once I’ve “Hey girl’d” someone and offered my warmest smile, what more can I do? I don’t want people I like to think I don’t like them, or I’m not happy to see them. But I’m fed up with faking it and participating in this ritual that makes me so uncomfortable. If there’s a polite, clear way to convey this to people without seeming cold or unappreciative, please let me know what it is. -- BRACING FOR THE EMBRACE DEAR BRACING: You are not alone in feeling the way you do. Not everyone is comfortable with being hugged. I think you should simply be honest about your feelings and tell the huggers that you become claustrophobic when people hug you, and to please understand that your reluctance isn’t personal. If you make it about you rather than them, it shouldn’t come across as rejection. DEAR ABBY: My son and daughter-in-law are splitting up. I’m devastated for them and my two young grandchildren, with whom I’m very close. They live in another state, so I stay with them when I go visit. Although we’ve always had a great relationship, I’m terrifi ed that my daughter-in-law will not want me to visit her after the divorce. I’m heartsick and don’t know how to proceed. What can I do to maintain a good relationship with her, while staying on good terms with my son? My grandchildren mean the world to me. -- HEARTSICK IN THE WEST DEAR HEARTSICK: The last thing you want or need is to get caught in the middle of the divorce. Try your level best not to take sides and be sure to give your almost-ex-daughter-in-law her space. Assure her that you care about her and that you deeply regret that the marriage with your son didn’t work out. (It’s true.) Tell her you have grown to love her as a daughter and hope that, in spite of the divorce, you will always be close. Do NOT discuss any intimate details or assign blame, if you can possibly avoid it, and try to keep your visits upbeat while concentrating on your grandchildren. DEAR ABBY: My wife and I will soon attend a weekend wedding. We will be meeting a large number of people for the fi rst time. My problem is I have a hard time remembering people’s names. I suggested to my wife that I carry a pocket-size notebook and write down names followed by a brief description. She thinks it’s a great idea as long as no one catches me doing it. I think, in addition to being practical, it will provide a bit of humor to the occasion. What say you? -- SENSIBLE IN SEATTLE DEAR SENSIBLE: I agree with your wife. Be discreet, if you can. Rather than carry a notebook, it might be less obvious if you enter or dictate the information in the notes section of your phone. samoa news, Thursday, December 7, 2017 Page B15 Page B16 samoa news, Thursday, December 7, 2017
