Welcome to the Mill Hill Boarding Community Here at Mill Hill we endeavour to identify and nurture the many strengths of each individual pupil, helping them to develop self-responsibility and independence, instilling in them the confidence and maturity required to confront the pressures of modern day living, whilst retaining traditional principles of service, humility and respect for others of all races and cultures. When pupils board at Mill Hill, they don’t just join a School, they become part of an extended family. They have a sense of belonging and know that they are accepted as individuals; that problems will be shared and triumphs celebrated. Living and working within the boarding community provides a safe training ground within which to develop critical life-skills in their journey towards adulthood, such as the importance of communication, consideration and compromise, lessons which cannot be taught as effectively in the classroom. Our co-educational, multi- cultural environment affords the opportunity for our pupils to gain a greater understanding and respect for people of any gender, all races, faiths and nationalities that reflects society, enabling them to welcome diversity of opinions. Embracing the global challenges of contemporary life, our pupils are encouraged to develop moral integrity and the confidence to stand up for what they believe in so that they are in a position to make a positive influence in their lives at School and beyond. Transition from home to school is made smooth as the boarders build friendships which will last a lifetime. These strong bonds are nurtured and developed in each boarding house and help pupils weather the early days of missing home and family. If you ask any boarder at Mill Hill what they like most about boarding they will undoubtedly say ‘being with friends’. Our team of boarding staff led by dedicated Housemasters/mistresses and House Parents have each boarder’s welfare at heart. Specific information about boarders' welfare can be found within this booklet. Working with the academic team of tutors and teachers at school, they understand that in order for pupils to thrive, their pastoral and academic progress must be aligned. The endeavour for academic excellence at school is balanced by ensuring that the happiness and well-being of each and every boarder is nourished. Each year Reports to Assembly include reports from six schools - Caterham, Eltham College, Silcoates, Taunton, Walthamstow Hall, and Wentworth College (as it is now called). That these are not the sum total of Congregationalism's contribution to independent education is made clear in Alan Argent's article. Although links with the United Reformed Church are now slender (they might be described as pleasant but formal), origins cannot be wished away. In the past year Taunton and Wentworth College have produced attractive histories. The current General Secretary of the United Reformed Church is an Old Silcoatian; an investigative journalist noted, in the course of the last election, that the wives of Paddy Ashdown, the late Harold Wilson, and Neil Hamilton, were past pupils of Wentworth Milton Mount.

    SPORTS PROJECT CASE STUDY Mill Hill School Originally a boys school set in 120 acres (49 ha) of parkland near London, Mill Hill was established in 1807. The founders decided to place it outside London because of ‘the dangers both physical and moral, awaiting youth while passing through the streets of a large, crowded and corrupt city’. Thanks to the botanical background of some of its founders many rare, exotic, and protected plants still flourish at the school. Mill Hill’s alumni include: • Patrick Troughton – the actor, most known for being the BBC’s 2nd Doctor Who. • Sir Norman Hartnell – fashion designer for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. • Tanika Gupta – the renowned playwright. • Francis Crick – who, with James Watson, identified the double-helix structure of DNA. Mill Hill became fully co-ed in 1997. The challenge: Mill Hill’s hockey pitch needed resurfacing. The school decided to also take this as an opportunity to upgrade the pitch’s old metal halide 2kW lighting to LEDs to help cut energy and maintenance costs. To help keep the project costs down Mill Hill had already decided that the current lighting masts had to remain. This was partly due to a tree with a protection order on it being near the pitch too. I was therefore delighted to see us all united together on a screen to listen to the departing pupils’ speeches, to hear the musical performances of our pupils and to give out the awards. At the start of the year, in Assembly, I impressed upon our pupils the characteristics of learning that we as a school are endeavouring to instil: commitment, curiosity, communication, compassion, creativity and collaboration. In each assembly, I have awarded Head’s Commendations to those pupils who have shown these attributes.

SPRING 2020 Mill Hill Magazine Mrs Jane Sanchez Welcome to the Mill Hill Magazine Head, Mill Hill School In the Summer Issue I encouraged you to ‘watch this space’ as we approached the end of that term; I hope that on reading this issue you will enjoy the coverage of all that has gone on since then. We are delighted to provide an opportunity for the new Chief Executive Officer of the Mill Hill School Foundation, Antony Spencer, to introduce himself, and to give an insight into this newly created dedicated role, as well as sharing some key elements from his career to date. On the farewell side, we also feature the final House Drama competition under the leadership of the Head of Drama, David Proudlock, who retires after almost 20 years of outstanding service to the creative arts at Mill Hill. You will also find a fascinating insight into the past 30 years of Mill Hill life in the form of Housemaster of Collinson Peter Lawson’s account of his career over these past three decades (notably in the context of boarding) as he prepares for retirement this summer. Other features reflect the diversity of what Mill Hill has to offer, both in the academic overview and the wide-ranging co-curricular reports which cover: the Sports Department’s specialist coaches; musical insights into our annual Nine Lessons and Carols service and the Chapel Choir’s trip to Truro; highlights in Art; the CCF’s contributions to the community; the girls’ Hockey trip to the Netherlands and Rugby trips to Dubai and Japan.
