With more international spaces renting booths than in years magazine past, an indication of LA’s growing importance in the art market, the fair kept the Barker Hangars buzzing. On opening night, Trophy Modern, a new line of furniture by Ry Rocklen Flash Art International + (jointly presented by Thomas Solomon and Untitled) had art world beauties from Shamim Flash Art Italy (EUROPE) Momin (LAND) to Claressinka Anderson (Marine Contemporary) flocking to try out the plush parlor chairs constructed from kitschy trophies. Collector David Pullman was seen eyeing an impressive group of large-scale paint-splattered sculptures by Richard Jackson at David Flash Art International + Kordansky, while rough-hewn assemblages with electrical outlets on their surfaces by the Los Flash Art Italy (USA and Angeles-based polymath Neil Beloufa (at Francois Ghebaly) lured in those eager to tap into the others) juice. Flash Art Los Angeles Editor Patrick Steffen plugged in his cellphone next to an ipad, which dangled from Beloufa’s work and onto the floor. Night Gallery, who also opened a new Art Diary International massive warehouse size space in downtown LA this weekend, had a mesmerizing eyeball- 2012/2013 studded construction by Samara Golden that had collectors talking, while a favorite from abroad was London’s Pilar Corrias, with a booth devoted to the Iranian-born LA-based painter Flash Art on iPad Tala Madani, whose loose cartoony brushwork calls to mind early Sigmar Polke. Notable French galleries—out in force to support Ceci n’est pas, a series of exhibitions around the city Prague Biennale 5/Prague celebrating Franco-LA relationships—included Paris’s Claudine Papillon Galerie, with cool Biennale Photo 2 Catalogue sadomasochistic sculptures featuring butcher knives in bronze by the Spanish artist Javier Perez, and Galerie Hussenot, who captivated visitors with trompe l’oeil works in wood by the Flash Art International + 4 South African artist Cameron Platter. Amongst the more whimsical and inspired booths was Fil issues Flash Art Czech & Rouge, curated by the Italian collective Lucie Fontaine for Various Small Fires and Anat Egbi, Slovak who teamed up to share a space. Unified by a blood red palette, the installation included ceramic geometric abstractions by Anna Sew Hoy, constructivist collages by Liz Magic Laser and walls wittily polka dotted red with the ubiquitous red sold sticker. On Saturday evening, Flash Art Italy Flash Art organized a well-attended cocktail reception to launch its brand new design. It was a success; see you next year at ALAC!
