This was the time when some Akan clans came to- gether to form a kingdom with Kumase as their capital,, some few years earlier. This apparently new territory was not the original home of the Asante. Originally all the ances- tors of the Asante lived at Adansc/Amansle.' The above assertion does not agree with Eva Meyerowitz's2 view that the Akan formerly lived along the Niger bend in the regions lying roughly between Djenne and Timbucto. There Is no evidence to support such mass migrations from outside.3 Adanse is therefore an important ancestral home of many Twi speakers. The area is traditionally known in Akan cosmogony as the place where God (Odomankoma) started the creation of the world, such as the ideas of the clan <snd kinship. Furthermore, Adanse was the first of the five principal Akan states of Adanse, Akyem Abuakwa, Assen, Denkyfra and Asante (The Akanman Piesle Num) In order of seniority.5 Evidence of the above claim for Adanse is shown by the fact that most of the ruling clans of the Akan forest states trace their origins to Adanse. -

Kissiedu ABSTRACT This studio-based research improvises on the architectonics of Kumasi kiosks. I present the ensuing body of artefacts as a working prototype which joins on-going cultural conversations on hybridity in contemporary art. The typical Kumasi kiosk is referenced as a site for negotiation of boundaries in its design, setting and function, but I have also made allusions to suggestions of hybridity and boundary negotiation in the polyvalent structure of Asante myth and folklore. I made a close study of three hundred kiosks located in the urban quarters of Kumasi. I also engaged such thinkers on hybrid spaces as Homi Bhabha , Jacques Derrida, Michael Foucault, Stuart Hall, Paul Gilroy, etc, to discourse on Asante mythology. I laid emphasis on the myth of ɔhyeεni (ɔhene-king), a patriarchal figure who negotiates boundaries, Asante and Akan filial kinship narrative from Asante history. -

The Ashanti tribe of the Man people is the largest tribe in Ghana; it is a matrilineal society. A description of the precolonial matriarchal tradition among the Ashanti people of Ghana, an analysis of how the matriarchal concept has evolved in more contemporary governments and political situations in Ghana, and an analysis of the status of women in modern Ghana may provide some insight into the impact of the queenmothership concept. -

QUAESTUS MULTIDISCIPLINARY RESEARCH JOURNAL A RE-ASSESSMENT OF GOVERNMENT AND POLITICAL INSTITUTIONS OF OLD OYO EMPIRE Oluwaseun Samuel OSADOLA, Oluwafunke Adeola ADELEYE Abstract: Oyo Empire was the most politically organized entity founded by the Yoruba speaking people in present-day Nigeria. The empire was well organized, influential and powerful. At a time it controlled the politics and commerce of the area known today as Southwestern Nigeria. It, however, serves as a paradigm for other sub-ethnic groups of Yoruba derivation which were directly or indirectly influenced by the Empire before the coming of the white man. To however understand the basis for the political structure of the current Yorubaland, there is the need to examine the foundational structure from which they all took after the old Oyo Empire. This paper examines the various political structures that made up government and governance in the Yoruba nation under the political control of the old Oyo Empire before the coming of the Europeans and the establishment of colonial administration in the 1900s. It derives its data from both primary and secondary sources with a detailed contextual analysis. Keywords: Old Oyo Empire INTRODUCTION Pre-colonial systems in Nigeria witnessed a lot of alterations at the advent of the British colonial masters. Several traditional rulers tried to protect and preserve the political organisation of their kingdoms or empires but later gave up after much pressure and the threat from the colonial masters. Colonialism had a significant impact on every pre- colonial system in Nigeria, even until today.1 The entire Yoruba country has never been thoroughly organized into one complete government in a modern sense. -

Despite their popularity because of their production in the local language, Akan Twi, these movies aberrate Ghanaian cultures, especially the arts, customs, lifestyles, background, and habits that characterize the traditional Akan society, which the movies largely portray. Based on qualitative research approach, six Kumawood movies were selected for critical review. The study sought to ascertain how Kumawood movies presented the cultural values of the people. The results indicated that Kumawood movies showcased diverse Akan cultural elements such as proverbs used for ensuring positive moral conducts, welfare, and acquisition of wisdom; rich traditional body adornments; Akan traditional festivals, folksongs, drumming and dancing, games; as well as sense of communal welfare, hospitality and traditional courtesies. -

Keywords: slavery, slave war, slave rebelion, Jamaica, Tacky’s Revolt praktyka teoretyczna 2(36)/2020 178 Markus Rediker concludes his story of a modern slave ship—a medium of Western slavery—by recounting a 1791 court case brought against captain James D’Wolf in Newport (Rediker 2008, 343–347). He had just sailed back on the two-masted Polly, having completed one of the variants of the triangular trade: he purchased and loaded 142 persons aboard at the Gold Coast (part of the Gulf of Guinea, today’s Ghana), 121 of whom he delivered to Havana alive (in Cuba people were traded directly and indirectly for sugar), before traveling back to his home in Rhode Island. The fifteen percent loss of human “cargo”—more than the average at the time1 —could have meant that D’Wolf, who not only commanded the ship, but also co-financed the operation, ended up making less than intended. It is also known, however, that he insured himself against losses above twenty percent—he may have thus remained within the range of expected profit. Meanwhile, in the United States, he was charged with murder. The court case of course did not deal with the deaths of slaves resulting from disease, anxiety, malnutrition, suicides, or disastrous conditions on the ship. -

Development at the border - Appendix A [Not for publication] The alignment of boundaries in colonial times This appendix illustrates the hazards that presided to the alignment of boundaries during colonial times. When referring to pre-colonial political entities, it is worth recalling that even structured kingdoms drew no maps1, and that ethnic groups are historical objects that were at least influenced, if not constructed in some instances, by colonial and post-colonial politics.2 Some kingdoms were com- posed of groups speaking di®erent languages, on a federal basis, like for instance the Gyaman kingdom lying across the present-day Cote d'Ivoire-Ghana border.3 A.1. The border of Cote d'Ivoire with Ghana The border area between Cote d'Ivoire and Ghana stretches from the lagoon regions bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the savannah in the North. We exclude the most northern part of this border where only few survey clusters are close enough to the border, i.e. the Bouna district in Cote d'Ivoire and the northern region in Ghana. On the Cote d'Ivoire side, the southern border area is made up of ¯ve contemporary districts: the "d¶epartements" of Bondoukou, Tanda, Agnibilekrou, Abengourou and Aboisso. This administrative de¯nition of the border region selects survey clusters that are pretty close to the border: they range from 1 to 118 km from the border, with a mean distance of 30 km. On the side of Ghana, the available regional subdivisions provide less details: we are left with two regions, Western and Brong-Ahafo; this latter region extends far from the Cote d'Ivoire border, so that 25% of survey clusters are more than 100 km away from the border, 1Herbst, J.I., 2000. -

Miceli** Abstract: Throughout history, religious and political authorities have had a mysterious attraction to each other. Rulers have established state religions and adopted laws with religious origins, sometimes even claiming to have divine powers. We propose a political economy approach to theocracy, centered on the legitimizing relationship between religious and political authorities. Making standard assumptions about the motivations of these authorities, we identify the factors favoring the emergence of theocracy, such as the organization of the religion market, monotheism vs. polytheism, and strength of the ruler. We use two sets of data to test the implications of the model. We first use a unique data set that includes information on over three hundred polities that have been observed throughout history. We also use recently available cross-country data on the relationship between religious and political authorities to examine these issues in current societies. The results provide strong empirical support for our arguments about why in some states religious and political authorities have maintained independence, while in others they have integrated into a single entity. A Hidden History: The West African Empires Before the Atlantic Slave Trade Linda Kaye Nwoke Fondren Middle School INTRODUCTION Fondren Middle School is located in the southwest section of Houston, Texas. It provides a rigorous curriculum that reaches beyond traditional boundaries. The magnet program offers exceptional opportunities, such as complete training laboratories where students learn graphics, digital imaging, and animation. Fondren is the only middle school in HISD to have an annual trip to Big Bend National Park every spring where the students can learn about ecology, biology, and geology. Fondren is a Title I school: 55% are African American, 41% Hispanic American, 2% Asian American, 1% white, and 1% other. 71% are at-risk, and 91% receive free/reduced lunch. We also have 81% in the Pre-AP program. Addo-Fening Modern Akyen territory comprises over 3,120 square miles of land.1 Its boundaries are marked by river Pra and Asante to the west, to Asante, the north-west, Asante-Akyem and Kmwu to the north, New Dwaben and Krobo to the east, and Agona to the south. Modern Akyem consists of three sub-divisions: Abuakwa. Kotoku and Bosome. The largest sub-division, Abuakwa, occupies about two-thirds of Akyera territory.2 Kotoku and Bosome share the remaining one-third to the west. Traditions of the three sub-divisions point to Adanse as their aboriginal home. According to Kotoku tradition, Adanse was ruled in the 17th century by three independent kings: King Korangye ruled at Fomena over the ancestors of the modern Adanse; Xing Danso Brepong ruled at Ahwiren, a few miles south-west of Lake Bosumtwi, over the ancestors of the modern Kotoku who were originally immigrants from Twifo Atoam; while King Aninkwatia ruled at Sebenso over the ancestors of the modern Abuakwa.3 The ancestors of Bosome 'lived in close connection with the Kotoku near Ahuren [Ahwiren]1.4 In the 19th century the Kotoku nostalgically recalled that they, as well as the Abuakwa, 'originally came from Adansi' and that 'King Inkansah and his people [i.e. -

Ghana Explore nature, history, and culture in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi and Akosombo Lawrence University Alumni Travel February 29 – March 12, 2020 1 HISTORY, NATURE, and CULTURE Ghana has the distinction of being the first African country to become an independent, sovereign state in the 20th century. Formerly known as the “Gold Coast”, Ghana led the world in cocoa production as part of the British Empire; now it has one of the fastest growing economies in all of Africa. Ghana is also a political leader and is perhaps the most stable, democratic country in Africa. Located in West Africa, Ghana is known for its rich cultural traditions and artistic endeavors. In this Alumni tour, our group will sample the best that Ghana has to offer: examining the political history of the country since independence, partaking in the vibrant arts, theatre, and dance scene in Accra, the capital city, exploring the legacy of slavery at the Cape Coast castle, and learning about traditional Ghanaian culture in Kumasi, the center of the Ashanti empire. Visitors to Ghana also quickly encounter its natural beauty -- sea coasts, sandy beaches, tropical rainforests, and mountain waterfalls. On this tour, you can take a treetop hike at the top of the rainforest, climb to the country’s highest peak, or stroll through a botanical paradise at your own speed. Our group will be limited to no more than 20, giving us an intimate look at the culture from the inside, aided by the numerous LU alums who live in the country.
