The Bakery has new owners! We are happy to welcome Merrycakes into the current bakery building downtown Kimball. They will continue to offer the same wonderful donuts we know and love as well as amazing cookies, cakes and more. Make sure to get in early because they always sell out fast!! The new transit building renovations are well under way and everyone is excited to see how it will look when it is finished! It will be able to house the Kimball County Transit Service vehicles as well as office space and a conference room.

BENJAMIN GIVAN uring his 2016 election campaign and early months in office, U.S. President Donald J. Trump was occasionally compared to a jazz musician. 1 His Dnotorious tendency to act without forethought reminded some press commentators of the celebrated African American art form’s characteristic spontaneity.2 This was more than a little odd. Trump? Could this corrupt, capricious, megalomaniacal racist really be the Coltrane of contemporary American politics?3 True, the leader of the free world, if no jazz lover himself, fully appreciated music’s enormous global appeal,4 and had even been known in his youth to express his musical opinions in a manner redolent of great jazz musicians such as Charles Mingus and Miles Davis—with his fists. 5 But didn’t his reckless administration I owe many thanks to Robert Adlington, Ben Bierman, and Dana Gooley for their advice, and to the staffs of the National Museum of American History’s Smithsonian Archives Center and the New York Public Library’s Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture.     Robin in context Introduction Robin produced some 115 compositions, among them a symphony, a violin concerto, a ballet, a masque, an opera, two oratorios, chamber music, pieces for piano and for organ, songs and choral works, both small- and large-scale. However, in addition to being the composer’s favourite and most personal genre, the songs for solo voice and piano are Robin’s largest and most condensed genre. These compositions will now be considered here within the context of early twentieth century English music and later through critical analysis. By the time Robin commenced song composition, a school of English song was well established through the work and compositions of such ‘main’ composers as Parry, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Gurney, Warlock and Finzi. However, in the contextualisation of Robin’s songs, other aspects need to be considered in addition to the main composers of song. These include the existence of a twentieth century English musical renaissance and its main composers; Robin’s studies at the Royal College of Music; contemporary composition students at the RCM; the ‘organ loft’ song composers; the friendship with Balfour Gardiner; and the development of music publishing, the British Broadcasting Company (subsequently, Corporation), musical education in schools and amateur music-making (including the many local musical festivals throughout the country). 1 The twentieth-century English musical renaissance Howes (1966) and Hughes/Stradling (1993) suggest and have proven the existence of a twentieth century ‘English musical renaissance’. Having argued the necessity for such a phenomenon, these writers explain its development, including a revival in the music of the Tudors and Bach, and a systematic preservation of and belief in English folksong.

Atkinson Karen Pierson Copyright by Yoon Hee Kim 2013 Abstract The National Flute Association (NFA) sponsors a range of non-performance and performance competitions for performers of all ages. Non-performance competitions are: a Flute Choir Composition Competition, Graduate Research, and Newly Published Music. Performance competitions are: Young Artist Competition, High School Soloist Competition, Convention Performers Competition, Flute Choirs Competitions, Professional, Collegiate, High School, and Jazz Flute Big Band, and a Masterclass Competition. These competitions provide opportunities for flutists ranging from amateurs to professionals. University/college flute choirs perform original manuscripts, arrangements and transcriptions, as well as the commissioned pieces, frequently at conventions, thus expanding substantially the repertoire for flute choir. The purpose of my work is to document commissioned repertoire for flute choir, music for five or more flutes, presented by university/college flute choirs and NFA sponsored flute choirs at NFA annual conventions. Composer, title, premiere and publication information, conductor, performer and instrumentation will be included in an annotated bibliography format. A brief history of the flute choir and its repertoire, as well as a history of NFA-sponsored flute choir (1973–2012) will be included in this document.

The Inspiration behind Compositions for Clarinetist Frederick Thurston. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2018, 86 pp., references, 51 titles. Frederick Thurston was a prominent British clarinet performer and teacher in the first half of the 20th century. Due to the brevity of his life and the impact of two world wars, Thurston’s legacy is often overlooked among clarinetists in the United States. Thurston’s playing inspired 19 composers to write 22 solo and chamber works for him, none of which he personally commissioned. The purpose of this document is to provide a comprehensive biography of Thurston’s career as clarinet performer and teacher with a complete bibliography of compositions written for him. With biographical knowledge and access to the few extant recordings of Thurston’s playing, clarinetists may gain a fuller understanding of Thurston’s ideal clarinet sound and musical ideas. These resources are necessary in order to recognize the qualities about his playing that inspired composers to write for him and to perform these works with the composers’ inspiration in mind. Despite the vast list of works written for and dedicated to Thurston, clarinet players in the United States are not familiar with many of these works, and available resources do not include a complete listing.
