Language list English Language of Material English Context Biografie Born in Cambridge 1889, died in London 1959; university lecturer, influential writer and advocate of (Guild) socialism; reader in economics at Oxford 1925-1944, then professor of social and political theory until 1957; active in the Independent Labour Party (ILP); worked for the Fabian (later: Labour) Research Department from 1913; resigned from the Fabian Society Executive in 1915 and founded the National Guilds League; secretary of the New Fabian Research Bureau 1931-1935, chairman 1937-1939; chairman of the Fabian Society 1939-1946 and 1948-1950, president 1952-1959; contributor to the New Statesman and director from 1947; wrote a monumental history of `Socialist Thought'. Acquisition Papers received by the IISH from Margeret Cole in 1960, see Annual Report 1960, p. 15. Content and Structure Inhoud Part of his papers: correspondence with publishers, literary agents and translators, the BBC, the Society of Authors, Playwrights and Composers, etc. 1910-1935, 1944-1957; letters received in reaction to his articles promoting the World Socialist Movement 1954-1956; typed and handwritten manuscripts of articles and books c. 1944-1958 (partly incomplete), including A History of Socialist Thought, Vol. V, Socialism and Fascism. 1931-1939' and an unpublished register of biographical data on international socialists. NB. Larger part of his papers at Nuffield College, Oxford. Arrangement This is only a very small part of G.D.H. Cole's papers, the bulk of which is in Nuffield College, Oxford. It contains 15 folders of correspondence with publishers and literary agents and translators, 2 folders of correspondence of a more personal nature and 4 folders of correspondence connected with World Socialist Movement. Finally there are 8 folders containing manuscripts and typescripts of articles and (parts of) books. The order in which the collection was found has chiefly been retained, though within the classification some items have been put in alphabetical and/or chronological order.
