A total of 1656 fish species under two classes, 40 orders, 191 families and 683 geranra reported from marine and estuarine waters of Tamil Nadu. In the checklist, 1075 fish species were primary marine water and remaining 581 species were diadromus. In total, 128 species were reported under class Elasmobranchii (11 orders, 36 families and 70 genera) and 1528 species under class Actinopterygii (29 orders, 155 families and 613 genera). The top five order with diverse species composition were Perciformes (932 species; 56.29% of the total fauna), Tetraodontiformes (99 species), Pleuronectiforms (77 species), Clupeiformes (72 species) and Scorpaeniformes (69 species). At the family level, the Gobiidae has the greatest number of species (86 species), followed by the Carangidae (65 species), Labridae (64 species) and Serranidae (63 species). Fishery status assessment revealed existence of 1029 species worth for capture fishery, 425 species worth for aquarium fishery, 84 species worth for culture fishery, 242 species worth for sport fishery and 60 species worth for bait fishery. -

NELSON1 In a previous study of the gill arches of teleostean fishes of the family Clupeidae, the writer defined certain phyletic trends, and on this basis erected an hypothesis of the phyletic interrelationships of the currently recognized subfamilies (Nelson, 1967a, fig. 9). To check these results, study of the gill arches is extended, in the present paper, to the families Engraulidae and Chirocentridae, which probably include the nearest Recent relatives of the Clupeidae. In addition, the structure of the branchiostegal apparatus is reviewed for all three families. They were generally small- to-medium adults. The hyobranchial apparatus was dissected as a unit from a given specimen, stained with alizarin (in aqueous 2% potassium hydroxide), and cleaned and examined under a binocular microscope. Drawings were prepared either freehand, with the aid of an ocular micrometer, or by tracing from photographs. -

In Eastern Region, Research present study the smallest size observed was 8.4 cm total length and 4.7 gm weight, the largest size was Centre, Ranchi, Jharkhand, 15.3 cm TL and 28.13 gm weight. The value of growth constant a = 0.0167 and b = 2.7273. In the present India study the b value was less than the ideal b (3) value which means the Stolephorus indicus shows the negative allometric growth pattern. The coefficient of determination of Stolephorus indicus was 0.9283, N Jayakumar which indicates a significant relation between the length and weight of the species. The observation on Fisheries College and Research condition factor and relative condition indicates that there no variation during the study period. WHITEHEAD British Museum {Natural History), London, U.K. ABSIHACT The clupeoid fishes (families Chirocentridae, Clujjeidae and Engraulidae) are the most important single group in Indian fisheries, representing 15-20% of total catches. Some 68 species have been recorded from Indian waters or are likely to be found. The absence of any modem systematic review of Indian clupeoids has often led to faulty identification and nomenclature, which in turn has limited the value of some otherwise useful biological studies. The synopsis given here is a synthesis of many recent but scattered papers on clupeoid systematics. It contains keys to all Indo-Pacific genera and all Indian Ocean species. The synonymies include the original reference to all generic and species synonyms. Each species is figured and reference to further information is given under the headings synonymy, description, distribution and notes. The clupeoid fishes listed by Russell and Hamilton- Buchanan are also tabulated and identified separately. Many systematic problems remain, especially in the genera Sardinella, Ilisha and Thryssa, but the present synopsis consolidates recent progress and provides a framework for future research. INTRODUCTION This synopsis is a synthesis of the many recent but scattered studies on the syste matics of those herrings (Clupeidae) and anchovies (Engraulidae) likely to be found in Indian waters. Field and museum workers have often voiced an understandable despair at the profusion of Indian clupeoid species (over sixty), the multitude of names that have been applied to them (over two hundred and fifty) and the lack of any modern and comprehensive review of the group. -

Os objectivos principais deste trabalho foram compreender a dinâmica do estuário do Guadiana e da zona costeira adjacente, durante o primeiro ano de enchimento da barragem de Alqueva; estudar o ciclo de vida do biqueirão Engraulis encrasicolus sensu lato neste estuário e integrar a informação da abundância e distribuição dos ovos num modelo hidrodinâmico do estuário, para a criação duma ferramenta de gestão ecohidrológica. -

Herre (1953) states that a knowledge of the number and kinds of fishes that comprise the fauna is indispensible to any program desig ned to explore and develop commercial fisheries or to further the know ledge of tpe fishery resource as a basis for their conservation and management.
